Steel drill rods with welded couplingThese drill rods are manufactured with friction-welded end pieces. The rod comprises a parallelwall blank tube to which a coupling is friction-welded at each end. The end pieces have a highermaterial quality than the mid body. The result is alighter rod with the end piece material offering ani n c reased wear resistance and higher strength inthe threaded connections.

The BWJ and NWJ are rods with tapered thre a d swhich are easier to make and break thancylindrical thre a d s .

Conventional drill rods

Compolite drill rodsThese light weight friction-welded rods aredesigned especially for fully hydraulic drills, suchas the DIAMEC® rigs, drilling conventional.

The compolite rods offers three main advantages:

• The weight: these rods are lighter than s t a n d a rd steel ro d s .

• The wear resistance: being manufactured f rom steel the compolite rods are more wearresistant than aluminium ro d s .

• The welding: friction-welding allows the useof higher quality in the couplings for longer life.

• The AWJ and BWJ are rods with tapere dt h reads which are easier to make and break than cylindrical thre a d s .

Compolite drill rods

Aluminium drill rodsAtlas Copco Craelius aluminium drill rods arem a n u f a c t u red in 43 and 53 mm dimensions, withsteel couplings at both ends. The aluminium alloyin the drill rods is of excellent quality (as used inthe aircraft industry), and hardened to a very hightensile stre n g t h .

An aluminium rod weighs only half as much as asteel rod of the same dimension but is equal ins t rength, due to the exceptionally high quality ofthe aluminium used and the greater wallthickness. By using aluminium rods, it ist h e re f o re possible to increase the drilling depth ofthe core drill, if the capacity is based on thepulling capacity of the rig.

A p a rt from easier handling, the lower weight ofthe aluminium drill rods also mean a smallermass being rotated in the hole. In turn, thisreduces vibration in the drill string and usuallyi n c reases the service life of the drill bit, togetherwith better core re c o v e ry.

Aluminium rods are also able to withstandg reater bending stresses than steel ro d s ,consequently the risk of permanent deform a t i o nis reduced considerably.

Drill rod couplings – the part of the drill ro dsubjected to the greatest wear – arem a n u f a c t u red of high tensile strengthened steel,t h readed and glued on the aluminium ro d s .

Aluminium drill rods should only be used incombination with corresponding dimensions coreb a rrels (i.e. 46 mm core barrel and 43 mm drillro d s ) .

Casing tubes – DCDMAAtlas Copco Craelius casing tubes arem a n u f a c t u red in American DCDMA standard s .They are all of the flush-joint type, i.e. they do notneed couplings. The casing is made in heavy wallany high material quality for drilling thro u g ho v e r b u rd e n .

The range of casing tubes extends from AW toPW in the DCDMA standard + SGW which isi n t e rchangeable with SW.

Casing tubes metricMetric casing tubes are thinner than theAmerican standard tubes, but offer insteadseveral additional dimensions within thediameter range. This means less reduction ofhole diameter when the hole is cased.
