Hi-Tech Repair:
Hi-Tech repair forms a very important part of the service that SBD offers. Through Hi-Tech repair SBD can
offer extended life for equipment that has been operating in the field where the only alternative may be to
scrap the part and replace with a new asset. SBD have created a special area where Hi-Tech repair has a
welding area to carry out precision welding on ports, internal cladding and computer controlled stub welding
operations. This ‘special’ area is an isolated air-conditioned welding area that can be kept clean with a quiet
environment essential for Hi-Tech equipment repair.
Established Hi-Tech repair procedures include:
• Stub Welding - Collars from 4 3/4" to 9 1/2" outer diameters with 5/8" to 3 1/8" wall thicknesses,
120" long
• Procedures for Non Mag Alloy, High Carbon Steel & 174PH Material

Non-Magnetic Drill Collars & Products
Schoeller-Bleckmann high grade alloys P530, P550, P580, P560, and P750 are used for these very
sophisticated parts because of their proven mechanical safety and corrosion resistance. The standard P530
material has been enhanced with our P550 and P580 material. P550 has a higher chromium and nitrogen
content which provides better resistance to pitting corrosion additionally to better mechanical characteristics and
endurance strength. The new P650 alloy uses higher Mo and Ni contents to achieve outstanding mechanical
properties and corrosion resistance. Our P750 brand offers you an extraordinary competitive possibility to
common Ni-based alloys.
Schoeller-Bleckmann Non-Magnetic passes the sensitization tests as per: ASTM A 262 Practice A & E
COMPRESSIVE I.D. TREATMENT
Schoeller-Bleckmann Non-Magnetic or Steel material has a proprietary treatment to the inside
surface. The treatment imparts a compressive stress layer to a nominal depth of 4.75mm both
circumferentially and axially throughout. This substantial depth of compressive layer provides longer
lasting resistance to Stress Corrosion Cracking.

Integral Blade Stabilizers (Non Magnetic)
SBD Non-magnetic Integral Blade Stabilizers are manufactured from Chromium
Manganese Austenitic Stainless Steel.
Stabilizer Hardfacing
For Non-Magnetic Stabilizers, SBD recommend hardface dressing type
HF3000. This particular dressing comprises tungsten carbide inserts set in a
powder spray deposit, which is ideal for abrasive formations. Dressing
technique has been developed in-house to take full account of the chemical
composition of the material and the need for repeat re-dressings without
damage. This includes full temperature control of the parent body during the
pre-heating process and also throughout the complete dressing procedure.
Quality Assured Tools
Full quality control procedures are maintained throughout all production
processes and when HF3000 hardfacing is deposited, final ultrasonic inspection
is carried out to ensure that a minimum of 97% bonding of carbide inserts is
obtained. This is the SBD guarantee and each tool is certified to this effect.
Connections also receive full dye penetrant inspection and are finally coated
with an anti-galling treatment.

medium hard formation holes are available in two types as
shown.
Stabilizer bodies are manufactured from A.I.S.I. 4145 H Modified
steel with mechanical properties in accordance with A.P.I.
Specification 7-1.
Mild steel blades are welded onto the body using strictly
controlled pre-heating, post weld heat treatment and weld
application techniques.
All areas affected by the process of welding are subject to full

Barrel Stabilizer Sleeves
AVAILABLE FOR HOLE SIZES 8 1/2’’ – 26’’
The SBD “Barrel” sleeve system has been designed to overcome the logistics difficulties
normally associated with transportation, storage and related costs of stabilizers at the rig
site.
Developed from the original SBD rig replaceable sleeve and fully inter-changeable with
standard steel and non-magnetic mandrels “Barrel” sleeves may be used for both string
and near bit applications.
Manufactured from high grade alloy steel “Barrel” sleeves are used extensively in
directionally drilled wells where unconsolidated or badly faulted formations are being
drilled.
Field tests have shown that when used in conjunction with a mud motor and or steerable
system the long radius and constant curvature of the sleeve blades improve directional
control particularly during orientation and can reduce torque.
“Barrel” sleeves are by design easily made power tight on the rig floor by using a
conventional plate type sleeve breaker or tongs.
Features
1) Long radius constant curvature blade profile reduces
hang up, hole wall damage and increases R.O.P
2) Reduced fluctuation of W.O.B. caused by hang up
3) Reduced drilling torque
4) Improved directional control when used in a steerable
system
Stabilizer sleeves may be
hardfaced with any of SBD
dressing alternatives and
the above illustrated blade
configuration can be
incorporated in integral
blade stabilizers if required.

Hardfacing
The LaserCarb® process from Technogenia and used by Laser Cladding Technology Ltd through a partnership agreement, has been chosen by Schoeller-Bleckmann Darron as a reference for the protection of their tools.
Part of the Group www.lasercladding.co.uk and www.technogenia.com
Laser Cladding or Laser Deposition is a processing technique used for adding one material to the surface of another in a controlled manner.
A stream of a desired powder is fed into a focused laser beam as it is scanned across the target surface, leaving behind a deposited coating of the chosen material.
This enables the applied material to be deposited selectively just where it is required.
Process Advantages
Additional material can be placed precisely where desired.
A very wide choice of different materials can be both deposited and deposited onto.
Deposits are fully fused to the substrate with little or no porosity.
Minimal heat input results in narrow HAZ (heat affected zone).
Minimal heat input also results in limited distortion of the substrate and reduces the need for additional corrective machining.
Easy to automate and integrate into CAD/CAM and CNC production environments.
Capacity
External Deposit: Diameter: Up to 1000mm Length: Up to 12000mm Weight: Up to 3000kg Flat parts can also be accommodated
Internal Deposit: Diameter: >50mm
Deposit Thickness: 0.5mm to 1.5mm per layer Multiple layers can be deposited with certain materials.

Circulating Sub
The Darron Circulating Sub has been designed to achieve increased mud
circulation by placement in the B.H.A., either above the bit or down hole motor to
pump materials in case of lost circulation.
Activation is accomplished by dropping a chrome steel ball down the drill string
and then engaging the mud pumps. On application of 3000 psi fluid pressure, the
ball shears the pin holding the sleeve in its primary position. The sleeves and pin
drop into the secondary position opening the three sub ports and diverting the
downhole flow.
Darron Circulating subs are manufactured from AISI 4145 H modified material
fully heat treated to give 285-341 BHN are available in the same nominal
diameters as standard drill collars or to customers own specifications.

P530 Material Data
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION:
P530 is a special nonmagnetic, austenitic Mn-Cr-N-steel with Nickel-content of < 2%.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES:
Following mechanical properties (tested at room temperature) are achieved by a special cold-working process over the full length of the collar:
MAGNETIC PROPERTIES: Relative permeability: < 1,001.
CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Transgranular SCC: Prevented by special surface treatments (Hammer peening, roller burnishing, shot peening).
- Intergranular SCC: The occurance of material sensitization is prevented by quenching after warmforging.
Each collar is tested according to ASTM A 262, Pract.A and E, last edition.
NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING:
- Magnetic inspection: Drill collars are 100% tested by a proprietary probe-testing process using a Förster Magnetomat 1.782. (“Hot Spot” – test). Magnetic permeability of each collar is certified with the printout of probe testing.
- Ultrasonic inspection: Each collar is ultrasonically inspected over 100% of the volume according to ASTM E 114, last edition as a minimum level.
GALLING RESISTANCE:
P530 is due to the chemical composition and the special coldworking process less susceptible to galling than Cr-Ni steels.
** Please note this data may be subject to change** P530 Non-Magnetic Drill Collars meet all requirements of API Spec 7.1, last edition. All tests are carried out according to ASTM-Standards, last edition.
