Bluetooth Smart is a new, open standard
developed by the Bluetooth SIG. It’s tar-
geted to address the needs of new mod-
ern wireless applications, such as ultra low
power consumption, fast connection times,
reliability and security. Bluetooth Smart con-
sumes 10-20 times less power and is able to
transmit data 50 times quicker than classical
Bluetooth solutions.
Bluetooth Smart is designed for new emerg-
ing applications and markets, such as health
and fitness, consumer medical, smart en-
ergy, industrial automation and security, but
it still embraces the very same features we
already know from the classical, well estab-
lished Bluetooth technology.
Robustness and Reliability
The adaptive frequency hopping technology
used by Bluetooth Smart allows the device
to quickly hop into a wide frequency band. It
not only reduces interference, but also iden-
tifies crowded frequencies and avoids them.
In addition to broadcasting, Bluetooth Smart
provides a reliable and connection oriented
way of transmitting data.
Security
Data privacy and integrity are always a con-
cern in wireless, mission critical applications.
Therefore, Bluetooth Smart technology is
designed to incorporate high level security
including authentication, authorization, en-
cryption and man-in-the-middle protection.
Interoperability
Strong qualification and interoperability test-
ing processes are included in the develop-
ment of Bluetooth Smart technology so that
wireless device manufacturers can enjoy the
benefits of many solution providers and con-
sumers can feel confident that their equip-
ment can communicate with other devices
regardless the manufacturer.
Global Availability
Based on the open, license free 2.4GHz fre-
quency band, Bluetooth Smart technology
can be used in worldwide applications.
Bluetooth Smart devices come in two types:
• Single-mode devices that only support
Bluetooth Smart, and are optimized for
low-power, low-cost and small-size solu-
tions.
• Dual-mode devices that support both:
Bluetooth Smart and classical Bluetooth
technologies are branded as Bluetooth
Smart Ready. Those devices are inter-
operable with all previous specification
versions.

Embedded Wi-Fi Modules for AffordableConnectivity
Wi-Fi is one of the most common methods
for wireless connectivity. Based on the
IEEE 802.11 standards, Wi-Fi technology
provides secure, reliable and fast wire-
less connectivity. A Wi-Fi network can
be used to connect electronic devices to
each other, to the internet or to wired net-
works that use Ethernet technology. Wi-Fi
technology is widely used in smart phone,
PC, tablet and consumer devices but is
also expanding into wireless audio, smart
phone and other applications.
Wi-Fi Technology
Today Wi-Fi products can do everything
from sending email to streaming video
and linking international video conference
calls–even linking you to the internet from
a plane 10,000 feet in the air or just down
the hallway.
In the mid-1990s, an international consor-
tium of engineering experts from many
technology companies began working
together through an organization called
IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic
Engineers, known as “I-triple E”), to devel-
op industry standards for how these new
wireless products should interact with
each other.
Frequency Band
Wi-Fi products operate in the 2.4GHz or
5GHz bands. These bands are designat-
ed as “license-free”, which indicates that
individuals may use products designed
for these bands without a government li-
cense, such as those that are granted to
TV or radio transmissions within licensed
bands. Since the Wi-Fi bands are “license
free”, it becomes more important for man-
ufacturers to ensure that their products
pass the standards of interoperability set
by the Wi-Fi certifications.

Wireless System-on-Module
Wireless System-on-Module is a com-
plete wireless embedded computer plat-
form built on a single circuit board. The
design is based on a microprocessor,
RAM and Flash, input and output inter-
faces, wireless connectivity and other
features needed for a fully functional em-
bedded computer.
The Wireless System-on-Module needs
to be mounted on a separate carrier board
that contains the necessary peripheral
devices and offers a compact packaged
computer to be used in specialized em-
bedded applications requiring wireless
connectivity, low power consumption and
physically small size.
Separating the computer and carrier
boards provides benefits in many cases,
as it makes the design more modular.
The peripherals, I/O interfaces and other
accessories can be implemented on a
separate board if different configurations
and form factors are needed, but a more
complex computer module can be also re-
used.

How To Integrate a Bluetooth Module Into a Device?
STEP 1. Implementation of Bluetooth
Bluegiga ensures that Bluetooth integration
into your application is a simple, quick and
cost effective process. Our optimal RF de-
sign, fully embedded Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
stack and support for many of the most com-
monly used profiles, speeds up product de-
velopment time and saves you the challeng-
es and cost of certification and RF testing.
It is worth considering when starting your
design process which Bluetooth wireless
technology option will be implemented. Ba-
sically you have two options:
a) Run the Bluetooth stack 100% fully inside
the module or
b) Run the Bluetooth upper layer stack in
your host-processor interfacing the module
using Host Command Interface, HCI.
Once your requirement is set, you can
choose the most suitable product. The
WT41, WT11, WT12 and WT32 Bluetooth
modules come with the embedded iWRAP
stack, but also support HCI mode. Bluegi-
ga’s WT21 Bluetooth module supports only
HCI mode and offers a cost and size opti-
mized solution.
STEP 2. How My Device Is Used–Which Bluetooth Profiles Are Required?
You need to consider how your device will
be used. In practice this means you need
to set and define which Bluetooth profiles
you will utilize. For example, if your appli-
cation requires a wireless serial connection
to another device, then you should use the
Serial Port Profile (SPP). It is very important
to define your Bluetooth features as this will
be marketed and mentioned in your product
literature in the future. We recommend you
contact our free support and discuss with
our experts the most suitable and efficient
profiles for your needs.
Eight Steps For a Successful Project:

portant when dealing with high frequency
RF technology such as Bluetooth. Bluegi-
ga’s technical documentation helps you to
get the most out of the module’s potential
when it is embedded on your PCB. If you
decided to use you will experience fast and
easy development due to the simple and
efficient ASCII based interface of iWRAP.
There are several Application Notes for
common use cases that show you step by
step instructions how to utilize the module
with the highest efficiency available for your
application.
