UB20 M.E.D.™ Manhole Entry Device

The M.E.D.™ allows workers to enter and exit through small man-size openings while maintaining continuous ventilation. Without such a device, duct fills the manhole opening, preventing rapid entry and exit.

Tightly integrated into the UB-line of confined space ventilation equipment, RAMFAN’s M.E.D.™ is quick to assemble and the new swiveling elbow makes duct alignment easy.

Changing its cross-section from circular to elliptical and back to circular minimizes loss and optimizes airflow into a confined space, while providing adequate room for the worker to enter and exit unimpeded. The rugged polyethylene construction endures heavy wear and tear and will last for years.

Comprised of three components, the M.E.D.™, swiveling elbow, and universal mount, the RAMFAN M.E.D.™ system increases safety by maintaining continuous airflow.

set-UP ProCeDUre1. Remove Manhole Lid2. Place Manhole Mount at the edge of the manhole so that the hook on the

mount is hanging a few inches over the manhole. Place the Manhole lid at the opposite end (lid will be propped up by manhole mount).

3. Attach the 15’/4.6m Duct to the bottom of the M.E.D.™4. Secure the M.E.D.™ by hooking onto Manhole Mount5. Attach the 90º Elbow by lining up the arrows at the bottom of the elbow with

the arrows at the top of the M.E.D.™ then twisting a half rotation.6. Set up Blower and Canister with 5’/1.5m Duct approx. 7’/2m away from

manhole. Attach Canister to blower using the rubber latches on the side of the Canister.

7. Pull out Duct from Canister and attach to the 90º Elbow8. Plug Blower into power source and turn on.

UB20xx M.E.D.™ Manhole Entry Device

The anti-static UB20xx system utilizes high strength polymers with an anti-static housing designed to discharge static build-up safely. The M.E.D.™ allows workers to enter and exit small man-size openings while maintaining continuous ventilation. Without such a device, duct fills the manhole opening, preventing rapid entry and exit.

Tightly integrated into the UB-line of confined space ventilation equipment, RAMFAN’s M.E.D.™ is quick to assemble and the new swiveling elbow makes duct alignment easy.

Changing its cross-section from circular to elliptical and back to circular minimizes loss and optimizes airflow into a confined space, while providing adequate room for the worker to enter and exit unimpeded. The rugged polyethylene construction endures heavy, negligent use and will last for years.

mount is hanging a few inches over the manhole. Place the Manhole lid at the opposite end (lid will be propped up by manhole mount).

3. Attach the 15’/4.6m Duct to the bottom of the M.E.D.™4. Secure the M.E.D.™ by hooking onto Manhole Mount5. Attach the 90º Elbow by lining up the arrows at the bottom of the elbow with

the arrows at the top of the M.E.D.™ then twisting a half rotation.6. Set up Blower and Canister with 5’/1.5m Duct approx. 7’/2m away from

How do you measure manufacturer claims of airflow delivery?

You may hear a lot about airflow rates on various pieces of equipment. While some manufacturers produce their own in-house ratings, others choose independent firms. The issue with self-rating is that there is no common reference point.

Take a simple standard like a ruler or yardstick. What would the world be like if everyone made their own “ruler”? You’d get a lot of variation, wouldn’t you? You really need a common reference point provided by an independent, unbiased organization to get a benchmark for a measurement. In the United States, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is one such group. In Europe, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) is another.

The Air Movement and Control Association (AMCA) provides the benchmark for the ventilation industry. AMCA is a non-profit international association of manufacturers that develops standards and measures equipment airflow delivery rates on an independent and non-biased basis. They have testing facilities in both North America and Europe.

The AMCA 240 test procedure for positive pressure ventilators uses a standard 36“ x 72” door opening. Because larger diameter fans are constricted by the standard door opening, the AMCA test procedure can accurately measure airflow for fans up to 21” in diameter. Currently no standardized test procedure exists for larger fans. Fans larger than 21” require a greater structure opening than a standard single doors due to the wide cone of air.

The lesson here is that smart buyers ask for AMCA Certified Ratings. They don’t rely on manufacturer claims, which are difficult if not impossible to verify. If the fan company cannot provide an AMCA rating on their PPV equipment, you may find that their airflow is not what it’s claimed to be.

No portable blower in the world compares with the smoke removal rates of the WF20 connected to ducting from 8” to 12”. Warships at general quarters require powerful suction to remove smoke from interior spaces. The WF20 suctions the smoke from the affected areas through long lengths of ducting to the outside air. At normal fire main pressures of 125 to 150psi, the WF20 makes about 4.5Hp with a 50gpm flow rate.

The WF20 blower uses the water pressure energy of a fire hose and a patented turbine, coupled to a high-efficiency fan blade, to generate high-velocity, high-pressure airflows.
