A good example of product development, testing and refining is the Breeze II, our two-station handwash. “We created a prototype of the Breeze and invited a group of twelve operators to Minneapolis to critique the product before it

went into production,” said Ken. “The group consisted of drivers, managers and owners, and they all gave feedback on what they liked and didn’t like. The end result was a better handwash station. It has been very well received in the market, proving to us again that customer feedback is vital to product improvement.”

“Internally we have a department devoted solely to product testing,” continued Ken. “We perform many tests, ranging from dropping and dragging restrooms, to checking UV stability and measuring life cycles. And we do it on all our products and many of our competitors’. In addition, we perform the tests in weather situations similar to what our customers face. In Minnesota, we tend to see all the extremes, which is good for product testing.”

As mentioned, the process of improving is never ending due

mainly to customer requests and emerging technologies. Change and growth are painful, but also very rewarding because portable sanitation can and will improve so many lives.

Why Satellite | PolyPortables?A LESSON LEARNEDIn 1958, a young Army Specialist at Fort Sam Houston, TX built a wooden portable restroom. He didn’t like latrines and figured nobody else did either.

Al Hilde became quite good at building wooden restrooms, using them to create a very successful portable restroom business. However, he was always looking for

a strong, lightweight alternative.

The breakthrough happened in 1972 when Al ventured into plastics and built a Tufway, his first polyethylene portable restroom.

An operator in Nevada heard about the Tufway and wanted to be the first to see it. So, Al’s sales manager loaded two Tufways into his pick-up truck and headed west.

Along the way, one of the Tufways fell out of the pick-up as it sped down the highway. It hit the pavement hard, but when he picked it back up, the only damage was a few scratches. He loaded it back on the truck and headed to his appointment.

When showing the operator the Tufways, he apologized for the scratches on one of the restrooms. When the operator heard what happened, he bought both Tufways and placed an order for 20 more. He said if a portable restroom

could withstand a fall like that and only have a few scratches, he wanted a whole fleet of them.

That day we discovered the value of a Tufway, and it reminds us that to be successful, we need to rely on ingenuity and quality. That’s why Tufways are still designed and made...in America.

Why?Originally designed as an entry-level restroom, the Global has evolved into an extremely cost-effective restroom with a rich assortment of unique benefits. The patented Impact Base™with its open-grid floor design allows three times as much fresh air to circulate throughout the restroom. Why?A unique combination of durability and comfort is why operators and end-users have made Tufway the most used restroom in the world.

By design, the Tufway interior is built for user comfort. It has a spacious, well-ventilated interior to reduce odors due to simple, yet important features. A combination of floor and molded-in wall vents facilitate continuous air flow. The urinal drains down the vent pipe which prevents unwanted tank odors from venting back into the cabana. The seat is positioned at the furthest point from the urinal, away from odor and the user’s direct sight. There is also a convenient door hook to hang a purse or jacket. Together, these features produce a more comfortable, pleasant experience for the end-user.

Operationally, the Tufway is a low-maintenance, easy-to-service restroom with a long history of durability. Using fewer parts made from high-density polyethylene, the Tufway can withstand impact and abusive handling without cracking or breaking. The features which make the Tufway easy to clean and service are the front-sloping tank top, slightly domed floor and smooth, deep-sumped tank. Adding slope to the tank and floor surface forces liquids to drain, not puddle, and the sumped tank improves deodorizer coverage and assures quick, complete waste removal.

The new floor design withstands twice the impact as the old floor. Beveled edges allow the unit to be easily moved around by a forklift.

The door frame has been made more rigid by eliminating a section and adding vertical channels to each side.

The new roof is approximately 50% stronger making it more resistant to snow weight.

Why?The Freedom has been re-engineered for added strength and space, all within a smaller footprint! New features include a vacuum-formed base, reinforced side panels, longer hand rails, molded vents, plastic carrying handles, and a strengthened roof, door frame, closure and latch.

From the ground up the Freedom is stronger, using a custom-made vacuum-formed base to create a solid foundation. In impact tests, the floor and wall joints withstood a force twice as hard as previous designs without damage, and a beveled exterior floor edge improves fork lift access for moving.

The re-engineered floor has the added benefit of being slightly narrower, for ease of transport, but the overall floor design actually increases the Freedom’s interior space! By widening the front floor area to increase space, it also makes the door opening larger, another added benefit!

The 300 gallon tank uses 3” Fernco style couplings at any of eight recessed port locations. It has three locations for optional 10” man-ways. The indented sides of this tank allow it to sit between and over the wheel wells of a standard pickup bed.

The 250 gallon tank uses 3” PVC spigot assemblies which can be installed at any of 10 recessed locations. It has two locations for optional 10” man-ways. The width of this tank allows it to sit between the wheel wells of a standard pickup. The tank kit comes with two spigot assemblies.

Satellite | PolyPortables’ 300-gallon rotationally molded polyethylene holding tank works well in many applications. 3” ports are located on each side with a 10” man hole on top for easy cleaning and wand maneuverability.

Satellite | PolyPortables’ 250-gallon rotationally molded polyethylene holding tank works well in many applications. The low profile tank has dimensions of: 6’ x 3’, 11 ½” x 18”.

Four 3” clean out ports are typically installed on each tank, but custom tanks with as few as two ports may be

produced. A uni-seal grommet and threaded PVC connector are inserted in each port. Each tank weighs 100 lbs.

With increasing regulations for waste tanks and external storage tanks, Satellite | PolyPortables has developed a 250-gallon Holding Tank Containment System designed to prevent contamination due to failure or overflow. Direct port connections allow the Service Technician to service the tank without removing the lid.

Prior to joining Safe-T-Fresh in 2016, Ramya Kothamasu worked for several large international corporations in their research laboratories, studying organic, surfactant and fragrance compounds. She has a degree in chemical engineering and has already made breakthroughs in odor control while at Safe-T-Fresh.

“Typically, products used in the portable sanitation industry have relied on compounds that mask odors,” said Ramya. “In other words, the compounds use high amounts of perfume, which dissipate and lose their effectiveness between services. Some compounds actually deaden a persons sense of smell as a means of masking odors.”“We’ve developed new odor control technology that moves beyond masking to actually changing the odor molecule,” continued Ramya. “Basically, the molecule is chemically changed. It is no longer an odor molecule, which means it no longer emits odor. As a result, we have reformulated all of our deodorizers with this new technology and the feedback from customers has been extremely positive.”

“We’ve Developed New Technology to Control Odors”

“A restroom trailer needs to be designed with the purpose of being a restroom trailer from the ground up,” says Ike Walther, Chief Engineer, Satellite Suites. “That may sound simplistic, but it’s a fact that building a trailer on top of a frame that was built for another purpose is simply taking a shortcut.”

“We also use materials that match the purpose,” states Ike. “For instance, we powder coat all of the metal on the exterior of the trailer and most parts inside. It costs more, but the result is a much nicer, longer-lasting finish. For the main structure, we use aluminum framing, not wood. Again, it costs more but is much lighter and it does not rot or retain moisture. That is also true of all the sub-layers. They are non-wood materials for added life.”

“Other practices we follow are keeping precise records of design and material changes,” continues Ike. “Design changes are updated in real time on tablets used by our line managers. It’s difficult to stress the importance of this practice. A real life example occurred when a customer called with an issue on the urinal. We learned how our design could be

improved to prevent the problem. The change order was sent to the floor by uploading a new mechanical drawing, which the line leader saw and made an immediate change to the next trailer.”

“Engineering trucks for this industry is much more than installing a tank on a chassis,” said Wes Tuttle, Vice President of Satellite Vacuum Trucks. “We focus on building trucks for safety, sustainability and ergonomics. For instance, weight distribution and center of gravity are critical to safety. This also affects sustainability, meaning the truck will remain in service longer and have fewer repairs compared to one that exceeds the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating).”

“Another enhancement that adds to the life of the trucks is using a bolt-on system for each individual part such as the stainless steel hose tray or cabinets. This feature reduces the cost and time spent replacing or repairing these high-wear parts when necessary. As for ergonomics, we consider lowering driver fatigue and service times the most important criteria when designing a truck. To that end we use single hook hose hangers, lowered work stations, easily accessible controls and other features to achievethese goals.”
