Quality and ResponsibilityWe pursue economic goals, but also take environmental respon-sibility. Almost no other brands produce as many embroiderythreads as MADEIRA. We know that the manufacturing anddyeing processes strain nature and the environment, but we doeverything in our power to sustain the essential characteristics ofthe ecosystem.

We are aware of our responsibility to ensure the survival of thecompany, whilst maintaining the livelihoods for people and nature.Therefore, we are using the most advanced technology in theprocess and only use high quality raw materials. By using thebest materials we ensure the good quality of our products at thesame time. "Quality and Responsibility" – this is the maxim of ouractions here at MADEIRA.

Confidence in TextilesSustainability and environment protection shape the way wedevelop, produce and distribute our threads. Only who uses firstclass raw materials and processes them carefully, is able toproduce first class quality products. Our clear commitment tosustainable management is not just modern image-building. It isthe defining culture of our nearly 100 years of history.

We produce threads for people who take pleasure in textilehobbies. They are creative, skilled crafters who spend much timeconjuring our yarns into personally valuable works of art. Ourcustomers are quality conscious and expect first class and highquality products in terms of processing characteristics, care,colour fastness and durability.

These expectations cannot be satisfied without using certain che-mical substances. In addition to the functional properties our cus-tomers require therefore a reliable proof of the human ecologicalquality of our products. MADEIRA yarns are certified under theOeko-Tex Standard 100. This label certifies that our productsare free of pollutants and health risks. Our main products areOeko-Tex certified with the highest category ”Product Class 1”. This means that the threads can be usedsafely even for baby clothing.

Raw MaterialsThe right choice of raw materials has a positive impact on the eco-balance of a manufacturer and paves the way for the quality ofthe final products. MADEIRA threads are made from raw materialof the highest quality class. We put a special focus on the materi-als’ origin and check the quality of the merchandise supplied inour own quality department. We mainly use re-growing raw mate-rials like viscose (wood), cotton and silk for our embroidery threads.Our sewing thread consists of high-class polyester fibres which weexclusively buy from renowned suppliers.

ViscoseOur main product is the Rayon embroidery yarn made from 100%high-class viscose. Viscose is produced from cellulose which is most-ly made from an especially fast growing kind of spruce. Viscose isan organic fibre and biodegradable. MADEIRA viscose threadsare Oeko-Tex certified with the highest “product class 1”.

CottonThe machine embroidery thread Cotona aswell as our Mouliné are made from 100%Egyptian, mercerised cotton. Cotton is a naturalfibre that is produced from the seed fibres of thecotton plant. Cotton is kind to the skin and has avery low allergic potential. MADEIRA cotton threadsare Oeko-Tex certified with the highest “product class 1”.

SilkOur hand embroidery thread Silk is made from 100%pure silk. Silk is the queen of the natural fibers. It is preciousand noble. Silk is produced from the cocoons of the silk-worm. MADEIRA Silk is Oeko-Tex certified with the highest“product class 1”.

WoolThe popular embroidery thread Lana is made of50% wool. Like silk, wool is not a herbal, but ananimal, so called protein fibre. Mostly sheep deliverthe wool. Wool is a natural product, biodegradableand re-growing. Of course Lana is certified withOeko-Tex as well.

Dye HouseNo other production step has such an influence on the environ-mental performance of a thread manufacturer and the quality ofits products like the dye house. Our dye house in Freiburg standsout through its strict process controls, intensive quality checks andstrong investment in the latest dyeing technology.

Our boiler is not operating with fuel oil, but with natural gas.During the combustion of fossil fuels, pollutants are released intothe air such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2).Natural gas supplies the most environmentally friendly values.The output of CO2 per kWh is only 0,20 kg of CO2 gas perkWh of energy used, whilst it is up to 0.28 kg of CO2 per kWhif fuel oil is burnt. Further sulfur dioxide is created through thecombustion of fuel oil, but not with natural gas.

Thanks to consistent improvements of the production process, wewere able to reduce the energy consumption per kilogram offinished product by 40% from 2003 to 2007. For example thewater vapor is not just released into the air but this heat is usedto dry the threads after the dyeing process. The use of energyand water saving dyeing machines of the latest generation haveled to the fact that our dye house is amongst the most modernand technologically advanced in Germany.

MADEIRA and Freiburg, the green cityMADEIRA’s headquarters and production facilities are situated inFreiburg im Breisgau. Located at the foot of the Black Forest,Freiburg is one of the largest municipal forest owners in Germany,possessing 5.139 hectares of forest. In 1992 Freiburg waselected the German "environmental capital" for pioneering workin environmental protection and solar technology. Since then,numerous awards were added such as the Federal award forsustainability in urban development, the German solar award orthe European local transport prize.

Today Freiburg is a model for a reconciliation of "soft" ecologyand "tough" economy. Successful management and environmen-tally responsible action do not exclude each other, but are equalguiding lines of modern enterprises. The fact that MADEIRAtoday is still successfully producing at this location is the result ofa progressive policy and proves that even in a globalized worldof textiles, the German site is a real competitive advantage formanufacturers of high quality products.

LANA No.12 is the first wool embroidery threadwhich creates soft, fluffy or textured designs,such as animal fur. LANA is ideal for use on mediumand heavyweight fabrics such as wool, linen,lightweight denim.

Professional Storage for Embroidery Threads

1.) Close the doors and stand up the box on its base to the right of the machine.

2.) Grasping all threads at once, clip ends to even using the built-in thread cutters.

3.) Thread machine with first color and begin stitching, repeat for each color. Thread should feed from right side of box, up and through guides, and directly into your machine.

4.) Rotate box to access second set of chambers on reverse side. Guides can be threaded from both sides if you are using both sides of box.

1.) Close the doors and stand up the box on its base to the right of the machine.

2.) Grasping all threads at once, clip ends to even using the built-in thread cutters.

3.) Thread machine with first color and begin stitching, repeat for each color. Thread should feed from right side of box, up and through guides, and directly into your machine.

Wash-Away water soluble basting thread helps youavoid the frustration of removing basting stitchesbecause it disappears with water or steam from aniron or damp press. It is a time saver for all kindsof basting, including basting zippers, hems, gathers,pleats, set-in sleeves, positioning pockets, fitting andquilting and appliqué. Important: Wash-Away dissol-ves in water, but not in dry cleaning solution. Store ina dry place such as a zip-lock bag or plastic wrap. Donot handle with wet hands.
