PRODUCER PROFILES THE FACTS Lamis Zamzam Company: Canaan Fair Trade, based in Burqin, near Jenin, Palestine. Canaan is a company offering produce sourced from small scale farmers organised in over 50 communities across Palestine, under fair trade terms. Canaan supports farmers through training in regenerative farming practices, value-added processing, micro-loans for small enterprises, and co- operative working. Since 2005, Zaytoun has worked with the farmers of the Palestine Fair Trade Association who sell their fairly traded produce to Zaytoun through Canaan Fair Trade. Canaan is a Palestinian commercial enterprise with a focus on sustainability and economic empowerment for rural communities in the West Bank, through fair trade and low impact technology. Canaan also supports women in their emergence as producers, and community leaders, working within producer cooperatives who are part of the Palestine Fair Trade Association. Lamis Zamzam works in marketing at Canaan Fair Trade, a job that involves both telling the stories of the producers and meeting international visitors who drop by to taste Palestinian produce and visit the communities who supply it. Lamis is also a board member of a “Shathaya Theatre”, where she works with people from all ages to overcome life situations and trauma that have emotionally affected them due to the political situation in Palestine. Lamis was born in Jordan and raised in Palestine, obtained her bachelor degree in Geography and Political Science from Birzeit University in 2012, and is preparing for her masters in Planning and Development. Visit PalestineEvery year, Zaytoun organises trips to Palestine for its supporters and customers. These trips are timed to coincide with the annual olive harvest in October.

Zaytoun supports an olive tree planting project which is run by the Palestine Fair Trade Association (PFTA). The PFTA farmer coops produce the olive oil, maftoul, almonds and freekeh which Zaytoun sells.

Farmers interested in participating in the project apply through Palestine Fair Trade Association coordinators. Allocations based on the following, a farmer must:

• Own land suitable for the number of trees applied for• Demonstrate capacity to care for and nurture trees• Be ready to prepare land for a collective tree planting day. All trees must be planted

on the day they are delivered.
