Cabaret NightSaturday 11th May was the latest veryenjoyable Cabaret. Top of the bill wasJody Kruskal from the USA who iscurrently touring the UK. Jody regaledand amused us with a selection ofsongs accompanied by his very cleverconcertina playing. He skilfullyinvolved the audience singing along tochoruses or providing a rhythmicbackground tapping empty glasses onthe table.Phil Lascelles opened the evening at
8.00pm prompt with a set of songs andjokes delivered in his inimitable stylewhich had the room in stitches oflaughter. So, we got off to a grand start. He was followed by Vanessa Wood-
Davies who played some lovely soloson her harp. She has welsh gypsyancestry and her grandfather was awell known harpist. She played severalgypsy tunes and some of her owncomposition. The third act was Chris Dodson fromHaddenham near Ely. His choseninstrument is the ukulele-banjo. Hesang a set of songs, some romantic andsome, more amusing, in the style ofGeorge Formby. After Chris we had a 30 minute breakwhich allows for a jolly good gossipand time for empty glasses to berefilled. At this point the raffle is drawnand the lucky ones choose their prizes.Warm nibbles were also served at thistime, as usual. The fourth act was a duo called
“Birdsong”. Kevin on guitar andBernadette on fiddle played a selectionof very enjoyable tunes and songsincluding a couple written by Kevin.Jody Kruskal’s very professional
performance finished the evening andthe compere (Neil Steed) closed theshow at 11.00pm.
The Cabaret is monthly in theCommunity Centre. In all, it’s verygood value for only £2.00 per ticket. Itis necessary to reserve a ticket as weneed to control the numbers to complywith the Fire Officer’s limits on theroom and to know how many seats weneed. Why not come along and see foryourself. Next month the featuredguest is Terence Blacker (songwriter). After that we have a summer break
and will start again in September.

GOOD COMPANIONSOur April meeting speaker was LisaAuker, a community banker forNatWest, who talked about scams. Shegave descriptions of scams that arephone, letter, email or personalcommunications that try to con you outof money and not all of them areillegal. She reminded everybody to beon their guard, not to make rushdecisions, give out personal details, IDor passwords to anyone if they are notchecked out first. Apparently almostthree-quarters of people in the UKhave been targeted by scammers in thelast two years and over half of themhave not talked to anybody about it.She advised not to be embarrassed tospeak to family and friends about thisand get advice if you are unsure aboutany offer. Scammers generally seemkind, talkative and friendly butmislead and lie and If somethingsounds too good to be true it usually is.Norfolk has a ScamAlert System:www.norfolk.gov.uk/scams

The Gardening Year: June
As we move into June and towards thelongest day, the extra daylight andwarmer days will urge flowers intobloom. It is a busy month and jobsinclude:
It’s time to hang Hanging upplanted baskets, putting out containersand bulking up the borders with annualbedding plants without fear of nighttime frosts. Petunias, pelargoniums, lobelia and salvias are all traditionalfavourites, but there are others to try.Trailing antirrhinums, pansies anddiascia all look good in a basket, andfragrant nemesia and heliotrope willlook and smell wonderful in a summercontainer. The weeds will also respond tothe warmer weather, so continue to hoeout the annuals, and dig out persistentperennials. A thick mulch will preventannual weeds from germinating. As tomatoes grow, pinch outthe side shoots to promote uprightgrowth. Harvest quick growing saladcrops and unearth early potatoes. Cut back late spring floweringrockery plants such as Aubrietia, Iberisand Arabis, and prune early floweringshrubs such as Forsythia when they allfinish flowering. As the weather gets drier, plants will need irrigating, especiallythose in containers. Watering early inthe morning and early evening willreduce evaporation and make the mostof your water. It is best to water beforethe soil or compost dries outcompletely. Make sure that plants arewatered well, as too little water willencourage roots up to the surface.Seep hoses are an effective way ofgetting water directly to the roots ofplants, and can be hidden beneath thesoil or mulch. And please remember to leavesome water out for the birds!
