Processesoverlap and interact throughout a project or phase.

Processes are described in terms of:

    Inputs (documents, plans, designs, etc.)

    Toolsand Techniques(mechanisms applied to inputs)

    Outputs(documents, products, etc.)

The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)is a collection of processes and knowledge areas generally acceptedas best practice within the project management discipline.

As an internationally recognized standard (IEEE Std 1490-2003) itprovides the fundamentals of project management, irrespective ofthe type of project be it construction, software, engineering, automotive etc.

PMBOK recognizes 5 basic process groupsand9_knowledge areastypical of almost all projects.

The Project Management Knowledge Areasorganizethe 42 project management processes into nineKnowledge Areas.

Project Management Knowledge Areas describe the keycompetencies that project managers must develop.

Four core knowledge areaslead to specific

project objectives (scope, time, cost, and quality). Four facilitating knowledge areasare themeans through which the project objectives areachieved (human resources, communication, risk, andprocurement management).

    One knowledge area(project integration

management) affects and is affected by all of theother knowledge areas.
