Mission Statement

I am a Christian Mason. My faith and my Masonry complement and complete each other. The lessons of one reinforce the lessons of the other. One cannot be a good man of Faith in Christ and not be a good Mason, nor can a true Mason be a false Christian: the two are incompatible. My hope and goal, as a leader within the York Rite, is to continue to expand my own Masonic education while sharing the Light that I have gained over the years with my Companions and Sir Knights. I have been blessed with good teachers in my church and in my Masonry. Although my father and the other men who helped to mold me into a Mason are now members of the Celestial Lodge on High, their words still resound in my head and in my heart. One of my uncles was my Lodge’s Ritual Instructor when I was working my way through the Chairs, and his simple reminder about ritual is still good advice about how to live your life today:

Say it, and then do it!

I bring you all good news – this is my last elocution as the head of a Grand Body. So please stop

looking down at your watches: I want to see the great big smiles on your faces as you contemplate that glorious fact. I can assure you that the only person who is happier that I am at this moment is my wife, Lady Cynthia. She especially deserves my thanks for everything she has done, everything she has done without, and all the support that she has given me on my Masonic journey. As a wise husband should, I will repeat that at dinner, so that she can hear me.

Special thanks go to SK Dennis Stewart, our Grand Recorder, who has also been there when I needed him; SK Robins, I advise you to heed his wise council. Also pay attention to SK Richard Hammill, whose knowledge of where the bodies are buried will come in handy – this is New Jersey, after all. To the rest of the Elected Line: “Thank you” for all your support, advice, and hard work this past year. A Grand Commander does nothing on his own. He must have others following him, or he is not a leader. Thank you for thinking I was worth following. To my fellow Red Cords: I’ll try not to be a stranger. The friendships we have shared are valued here in my heart and I hope that Lady Cyndi and I can continue to visit your Annual Conclaves.

S.K. Tsirimokos, I thank you for your help and guidance this past year. Happily, nothing happened here in New Jersey that required your intervention, but I appreciate your advice on the legislation we enacted last November. This past Templar Year felt good to me. We held our annual Festival in October, and everything ran on time and under budget. My thanks to Sir Knights Gothe and Hammill for handling all the behind-the-scenes details and to SK Charles Runyon for dealing with the three Degree Teams.

We had a Special Conclave in November, to handle the business of this Grand Commandery. We managed to adopt a restated Constitution, a restated Laws and Regulations, amend the Uniform Regulations, and adopted a budget for this next year – all in about an hour and a half!

I am particularly proud that this Grand Commandery chose to adopt the new award that I came up with, the Color Guard. For those who are not aware of it, it is a service award granted at the pleasure of the Grand Commander; only two may be granted each year from now on. The ensign of the award is a black and white shoulder cord, emblematic of the Beauceant that the Color Guard protects with their lives. It is my hope that this award will become as respected and as selective as the Junius C. H. Schmidt and Harold D. Eliot II awards. The three recipients

12

will be recognized tonight at the banquet. During this past year, I visited every Commandery once officially, and several I got to visit personally. On one of those Visits I had the honor of presenting S.K. M. Edward Verdi II his Honorary Past Grand Commander’s Jewel. I also had the pleasure of visiting each of our sister jurisdictions of the Northeast Department, as well as the NE Regional Conference and the Easter Sunrise Service in Arlington. I also represented us at Grand Lodge, and in Lodges, Chapters, Councils, DeMolay, Rainbow, and other groups within the Masonic Family. All those visitations will be listed in the Proceedings. There was a need for every few General and Special Orders this past year. We started the year with a Special Order concerning the 700th anniversary of the death of Jacque DeMolay, but after that most of the Orders were housekeeping ones. They too will be listed in the Proceedings.

The Points program continues to be a useful tool for the Commanderies, showing them the things they can do as Sir Knights to make their Commanderies better, to make this Grand Commandery better and by doing so make this world better. Sir Knights, continue to have programs, to be Ambassadors, and in general don’t just sit around reading the minutes and paying the bills. The winners of this Program will be announced at the banquet tonight; the Chair of the Committee has told me that the total number of points submitted by the ten Commanderies totaled more than 5,000. Well done, Sir Knights. Keep up the good work! The top three Commanderies will be awarded their certificates at the Banquet this evening.

I have only two regrets for this year. One is that I don’t think we did enough to help the young men of the DeMolay, given the milestone anniversary last March. Please try to do as much as you can for them, if only out of enlightened self-interest. Those young men, nicely trained to attend meetings and accustomed to memorizing and conferring ritual, can grow from DeMolay to Lodge if we nurture them properly. Once we get them into a Lodge we can continue their Masonic education within the York Rite. My other regret is the quality of the messages I read this year, and, yes, I did read every one that was sent to me. As I reminded the new Commanders at our January Top Three meeting, dispensing Masonic Light and Knowledge is one of a Commander’s duties. With the Bible, our ritual and tactics, and your own experiences to draw from, you do not need to fill your message with “thankyous” and “save the dates”. Govern yourselves accordingly.

To my successor, S.K. Richard G. “THE Rick” Robins, I have no suggestions that you haven’t already heard when we sat at your kitchen table, going over your plans for next year. I believe I’ve handed you a Grand Commandery in somewhat better shape than I received it. I expect you to do the same a year from now.

To the Sir Knights of this Grand Commandery, thank you not just for this year but for every day, every hour, and every minute that I have enjoyed as Mason and as a Knight. I do not have a laundry list of recommendations or actions to be taken. I have tried to put into action the things I thought needed to be done. I ask only that you continue your Masonic education, and that you continue to share that education with others. There’s a story about a knight who never took off his armor. He wore it day and night, so that he would be ready when he was needed.

13

Page 18: Proceedings of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar State ... · p. roceedings. of the . grand commandery . knights templar . state of new jersey . at its . one hundred fifty-f. ifth

But he lost his wife and children, his family and friends, because he never shared in their lives. His armor grew weak and rusty, because he never cleaned it, never improved it. When the time came for him to act, he was too old, too weak, and unable to move in his rusted armor. Do not be like that! Being a Knight doesn’t take place only within an Asylum during a Conclave. It is what you do out there in the world that shows others what it really means to be a Knight Templar. So I leave you with the motto of my year, which I have tried to teach, to preach, and to live: Onward, Christian Soldiers.

After the conclusion of the address, Sir Knight Richard G. Robins, VEDGC, called upon Sir Knight Douglas R. Policastro, REPGC to present his report on the Elocution.

Report of the Committee on the Grand Commanders Address

To the Right Eminent Grand Commander, Officers and Members of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of the State of New Jersey, in session at the 155th Annual Grand Conclave.

Your committee on the Address of the Grand Commander, has reviewed the allocution and report of the Grand Commander, his stewardship of the Grand Commandery as well as his general conduct

and demeanor over the past year.

Sir Knight Barnes, we acknowledge with honor and pride both you and your elected and appointed officers for the year. Your officers supported you well in carrying out their duties as well as being with you on your visitations, in visiting Commanderies, and representing you upon your request. We note with pride and appreciation your extensive visitations to the Annual Conclaves of Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, as well as the Easter Sunrise Service in Arlington Virginia and the Grand Encampment Northeast Regional Conference. We also recognize that you had an Official Visit in each of our Commanderies, and that they were all attended by both your Staff and the members of those Commanderies. You have stressed to your Elected Line the importance of visiting and of building a networking system that will only enhance the effectiveness of our great Order; we trust that your Elected Line will follow your example. You also represented us well in your visitations to our other Masonic bodies that make up our extensive family. We are also pleased that you continued with the Ascension Day Service and Christmas Church Service with the sing along at the Masonic Home. It is always a joy for the residents to be able to participate with the Grand Commandery Officers. Your Grand Festival was a success as you were able to welcome those knighted into our Order and urge them to become positive contributors to the Commanderies they joined. Your Dispensations and Orders, being few in number, are referred to the By-Laws and Dispensation Committees for them to review and approve. It is noted that, instead of making any recommendations to this Grand Commandery, you enacted upon any issues that you thought needed our attention immediately; therefore leaving this Grand Commandery in better shape than that in which you received it. We fervently hope all future Grand Commanders will do likewise, and for that we say,

14

Page 19: Proceedings of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar State ... · p. roceedings. of the . grand commandery . knights templar . state of new jersey . at its . one hundred fifty-f. ifth

thank you. We do note that there is some personal pride in things that were accomplished this year and among those were the honor of presenting Sir Knight Edward Verdi his Honorary Past Grand Commanders Jewel and the addition of the Grand Commander’s Color Guard Award. You ran a Top Three Meeting on a Saturday morning, immediately followed by an Emergent Special Communication of this Grand Commandery, where you managed to adopt a restated Constitution, a restated Laws and Regulations document, amend the Uniform Regulations, and adopt the 2015 Annual Budget, all before noon. One would begin to wonder what those in the Elected Line will do in the future as it appears you have tied up all the loose ends. Sir Knight John Davis Barnes, REGC. We congratulate and complement you on the performance of your duties this past year. Your conduct and demeanor have been without reproach and you have certainly left your mark in a very positive way. You are a credit to yourself and this Grand Commandery and we welcome you as Past Grand Commander. May your Purple Cord continue to be well-traveled. In closing: well done thy good and faithful Sir Knight. May the blessing of Our Father in Heaven attend you and may you continue to wield your sword in support of the Christian Faith and this Grand Commandery ; and yes, Onward Christian Soldiers.

Respectably submitted, Douglas R. Policastro, REPGC, KYGCH, KCT Chairman

Almost all of the ten Constituent Commanderies submitted their Council Officers Report by the deadline of January 31, 2015.

Almost all of the ten Constituent Commanderies submitted their Annual Report by the deadline of January 31, 2015. The Fiduciary Report deadline was extended due to changes in the reporting format introduced by the Finance Committee. This will be noted in the Treasurer’s Report as items not calculated.

Most of the Commandery Recorders were persistent at maintaining the Grand Encampment YRIS data base and in keeping me informed of the changes in their membership during the past year.

The Proceedings of the 154th Stated Conclave were published and posted on the Grand Commandery of New Jersey York Rite Website (www.knightstemplar.org/gckt/nj) and will be distributed to the Constituent Commanderies and Past Eminent Commanders, of New Jersey, Grand Encampment Officers and Grand Commanderies in the United States of America, plus Italy, Portugal, Philippines, Mexico and Puerto Rico. General The membership statistics show we have a Loss of three point four per cent (3.4%) of our total members during this past Chivalric year. We do know that our Constituent Commanderies have been actively promoting membership by presenting YorkRite Unity Programs and attendance at Blue Lodge functions. This approach has begun to pay off with our Blue Lodge Brethren displaying interest in our Illustrious Order and more Sir Knights joining our ranks. Unfortunately it has not been sufficient in keeping our numbers up as we have suffered losses amounting to fifty seven (57) suspenions; twelve (12) dimits and sixteen (16) deceased thispast Chivalric year. We have an even longer way to go to bring our numbers up to the totals we had just ten years ago. There are still many of our Blue Lodge Brethren who are unaware of our magnanimous and valiant order, we must continue to make a concerted effort through attendance at Blue Lodge functions, by wearing Class C Uniforms, and promoting York Rite Unity presentations to make these prospective Knights Templar more informed of our precepts, concepts and comradery. I would like to take this opportunity to properly thank all the Sir Knights and Officers of this Grand Commandery for their aid and comfort to the Grand Recorders Office this past year.

Respectively submitted, S.K. Dennis L. Stewart Grand Recorder

Committee Reports 2014

To the Grand Commander, Officers and members of this Grand Commandery of New Jersey: Greetings: Membership Committee: The Commandery still continues to promote Templary through out the State. A program suitable for presentation in a Masonic Lodge has been put together by S.K. Mark Megee and others that exposes the Brothers to the other three bodies of the York Rite and has produced some petitions. Also, the Knights of Corson Commandery continue making presentations in Lodges, which have also resulted in new petitions. Although we take in members they are off-set by losses through various reasons, however we are in a positive state. More progress needs to be made, but we are moving in the right direction. York Rite Unity Committee: There has been no active meeting between the York Rite Bodies this past year although personal contact is still on-going. As noted in the Membership report, programs have been instituted which promote all three York Rite bodies to the Brothers of the Symbolic Lodges, in an effort to increase the membership of all the bodies. To my knowledge, the schedules of ME Grand High Priest, MI Grand Master, and the RE Grand Commander did not conflict, allowing the Companions and Sir Knights to attend any Official Visit that their Cable-tow permitted. By-Laws Committee: There has been By-Law changes submitted for approval. The Constitutional changes were approved and posted. Respectively Submitted SK Richard A. Hammill, VEDGC

Asylum and Tactics Committee Report

To the Grand Commander, Officers and members of this Grand Commandery of New Jersey: Greetings: There were no changes to be made to Asylum Tactics for this Chivalric Year. All activates were under the direction of the Grand Inspector General, S. K. Charles Runyon. S.K. Runyon, assisted by S. K. M. Edward Verdi, II, the Grand Captain-General, conducted an excellent Festival this past October. Any other details concerning Tactics will be covered in the Grand Inspector General’s Report. I continue to urge the Sir Knights to adorn their Asylums with appropriate Templar material. We are our own Order, and should represent ourselves to all visitors as such. Show your pride in Templary! The Grand Encampment has issued an up-dated Tactics manual, and all Constituent Commanderies should obtain copies as soon as possible. Please disregard the old manuals. Respectfully Submitted, S. K. Scott A. Gothe Grand Captain General Chairman

Holy land Pilgrimage Committee Report

To the Grand Commander, Officers and members of this Grand Commandery of New Jersey: Greetings: No Commandery nominated a clergy member to travel to the Holy Land this past year. I urge all the Sir Knights and all the Commanderies to support this worthy cause. It is a direct application of our duty to be charitable, and a clear demonstration of our faith. All monies for this charity are handled by the Grand Recorder, and will be included in the financial portion of his report. Respectfully Submitted, S. K. Scott A. Gothe Grand Captain General Chairman

Eye Foundation Committee Report

To the Grand Commander, Officers and members of this Grand Commandery of New Jersey: Greetings: Charity is one of the tenets of our Order, and what better way to show it than by helping others! I urge all the Sir Knights, and all the Commanderies, to support this very worthy endeavor. All monies for this charity are handled by the Grand Recorder, and will be included in the financial portion of his report. Respectfully Submitted, S. K. Mark Megee Grand Senior Warden Chairman

Points System Committee Report

To the Grand Commander, Officers and members of this Grand Commandery of New Jersey: Greetings: All ten Commanders submitted a Points Report for the 2014 Chivalric year. The top three Commanderies will be announced by the RE Grand Commander during the Annual Conclave and/or Banquet, at his pleasure. I urge the Commanders to track the points earned by their Commanderies every month, and report them regularly to the Grand Generalissimo. I recommend that they provide their Sir Knights, especially their Officers, with a copy of the report form. That should serve as a reminder for the members to tell their Commander what they’ve been doing to represent Templary both within the Craft and in the world at large. These points are not being tallied to see how good a job an individual Commander is doing, but to see how much their Commanderies are participating in Templary. It provides the next Commander with a sense of what areas need improvement and what areas merely need to be fine-tuned. Respectfully Submitted, S. K. Scott A. Gothe Grand Generalissimo, Chairman

Report of the Committee on Patriotic and Civic Activities

To the Right Eminent Grand Commander and the Sir Knights of the Grand Commandery of New Jersey;

Greetings;

Only two Commanderies reported on their activities for the past Templar Year. Helena Commandery #3 scheduled a food drive at the Acme Super Market. It went well considering the mini-blizzard they experienced. They garnered 13 shopping carts filled with food donations and they emotionally overwhelmed the Volunteers at St. Vincent de Paul’s local food bank when they brought several pick-up trucks filled with food to the Church Outreach Center. Flyers were handed out containing the names of our York Rite Bodies. Crusade Commandery #23 reported that they participated in several Community Events, such as NJ Polar Bear Plunge (for the Special Olympics) as well as visits to the NJ State Veteran’s Home, donating a wheelchair to a Veteran at the Home and participating in Honor Guards throughout the State. I am certain that other Commanderies took action, such as participating or assisting at ARC, or Special Olympics events; but they were not reported. Grand Historians Report

“The perfect historian is he in whose work the character and spirit of an age is exhibited in miniature.” Far from being the perfect historian and there being absolutely no written criteria or job description for the position of Grand Historian of the Grand Commandery, I have taken it upon myself to give my perceptions and interpretations of the current state of both the Profane and Masonic world. A very brief contemporary account to give a bird’s-eye view of our times to future Masonic Historians. The year 2014, one hundred years after the beginning of World War I, “the war to end all wars.” Well, we’re still at war. We call this era “the age of information.” Unfortunately, most of the information is erroneous. Technology meant to simplify life, has made it more complicated. Of course, average life expectancy has increased, and there are a lot of really good shows on TV. Culturally and sociologically we are about to enter the “Dark Ages.” When people finally tear them-selves away from their communication devices, they talk to fast. Airplanes are consistently landing at the wrong airports and people driving cars seem to have forgotten how to use their turn signals. Terms like “excuse me” or “I beg your pardon”, are met with looks of bewilderment and non-comprehension. During the height of the Roman Empire, ignorance was fed with bread, and circuses, today its credit cards and the internet. Cornwallis, after his defeat, marched out of Yorktown to the tune of “The World is Turned Upside Down.” Freemasonry in New Jersey is turned upside down today. Instead of the Fraternity influencing the profane world, the opposite is true. Here’s a familiar contemporary quote circulating throughout our state, “If we don’t change our ways, we’re out of business!” I guess when we incorporated, we became a business. We have allowed the profane world to cross our thresholds and enter our lodge rooms. It’s easy to keep tobacco and alcohol out, you can see them. Originally lodges of Speculative Freemasons were formed to encourage open liberal secular discussions. Three hundred years later, I’ll probably be on somebody’s list for using the “L” word. Freemason used to mean “free thinker.” In 2014 we have two situations; the first one, a declining number of initiations. This is caused by a self-inflicted lobotomy. Every successful organization has a recruiting program to get the best people. We have none. The second situation confronting us is poor attendance. This is a very interesting phenomenon. We’ve had this problem for a generation or approximately 25 years. I see two reasons for this. Previously the fraternity experienced a post-World War II surge in membership, sort of like the Economic Bubble that exploded in 2008. Our membership bubble exploded and what we now have is statically closer to normal. That doesn’t explain all of it. When I first joined the Fraternity over 20 years ago, I did a lot of research on my own, just like most of our new members do today. There was a true spirit of brotherly love that seems to have gone sour particularly in the last decade. I call it the “Profane Invasion.” Whether in the banquet hall or even in open lodge, these new guys are bombarded by political or religious dogma, which is often inaccurate. They joined to get away from that stuff. That’s one reason they don’t come back. The conversation is no different than around the water cooler at work. The Lodge is meant to be a sort of “neutral zone”, a place to hone the intellect, expand the circle of our acquaintances, sit down with each other and have a good meal, get away from the outside world for a little bit, recharge our batteries, go forth and practice freemasonry in our communities. This is not happening. This is why the new guys don’t come back. We don’t practice what we preach. This is what they discover after just a few meetings. So there you have it my future brother historian. I leave you my brief perceptions and interpretations for the year of our Lord 2014, hoping that by 2114 people can still read. One thing I know will not change; no institution was ever founded on a better principle or raised on a more solid foundation. Fraternally submitted, Michael J. Maslanik Grand Historian

GRAND ENCAMPMENT HONORS

The Grand Encampment has a program of Honors which has two levels. Knight Grand Cross of the Temple and Knight Commander of the Temple. This program gives the Grand Encampment a way for honoring Sir Knights who have distinguished themselves in their field of endeavor. It does not limit itself to Masonry alone, but to qualify, a person must be a KnightTemplar. The recipients receive an engraved Patent and Jewel. The jewel may be worn on the uniform or on a tuxedo. The recipients may also use the letters KGC or KCT after their names; they should be introduced along with the Knights Templar Cross of Honor holders.
