Our April Presenter

Kaitlin Wainwright

Heritage Toronto

On April 11, Kaitlin explained that Heritage

Toronto “brings together the collective stories of

Toronto through programs that share our past,

foster a sense of place and inspire people to

participate in the building of their

communities”.

There are over 60 public walks exploring

Toronto’s architecture, music history and

natural heritage; some are repeated at least once.

This year there is a new program, Emerging

Historian tours, whereby six new walking tours

have been created.

Heritage Toronto has installed over 500

commemorative plaques noting specific people,

places and events that have shaped Toronto.

There are public programs of pop-up exhibits,

symposia and bus tours.

Heritage Toronto also advises the city on

heritage issues and planning matters and

celebrates the extraordinary contributions of

individuals, groups and organizations at their

Annual Toronto Awards Ceremony.

Since 2018 is the centennial of women’s rights

to vote in Ontario, there are tours celebrating the

achievements of women who sought improve-

ments in gender equality and a fair and just

society.

Be sure to book early as spots fill up quickly.

Bring a water bottle, comfortable shoes and

dress appropriately as tours go regardless of the

weather. Register at heritagetoronto.org.

Donations of $10 are encouraged to cover the

costs for this charitable enterprise. Further

information is available at 416-338-0684 or

[email protected].

Membership is $35 for seniors 65+ or under 30.

It entitles you to members-only events, a 30%

discount on events and programs, reciprocal

benefits with partner organizations and free

admission to city museums. Call 416-338-0684

or [email protected].

Many thanks to Kaitlin and for bringing the

May-October 2018 and membership brochures.

She also reminded us to participate in Toronto’s

May 27 and 28 Doors Open event to see many

behind the scenes locals. Wendy Hooker

Q: What do you get when you cross a dog and a calculator?

A: A friend you can count on.

Volunteers (2) for Probus-Guildwood Due to recent illness or surgery, we need your

help. We’ve lost the services provided by Joy

McIntosh, our Secretary, and while Jane Corry,

Speakers Chair, is in respite care. If you can

prepare minutes and are willing to attend the

general and executive meetings each month, you

would be a welcome addition to our executive.

Jane has been finalizing our 2018 monthly

speakers, but she really needs a partner. Please

contact an executive member if interested.

I thought it would take a lot longer to get old.

Probus Clubs

On April 20 John Roblin, Alan Burt and Wendy

Hooker attended the District 3 Probus Meeting

in Mississauga where we exchanged best club

practices. PROBUS clubs are a valuable resource

for adults who have retired from various vocations

including business or the professional world.

Studies confirm that being active physically and

mentally enriches and extends our lives.

PROBUS clubs provide more opportunities for

engagement, fun and more ways to expand our

social networks, interests and skills.

Building Social Networks

Three years ago we implemented one resource

that other clubs use to assist members to connect

with one another. Thanks to Barry Scheffer and

Alan Burt and Your participation, we have an

exclusive Probus-Guildwood Club Registry so

that you can see and connect with other members

from their photos, interests and contact

information. We also have club volunteers who

greet you at the door and present newsletters to

our members who do not have computers. We call

upon specific members who offer additional

opportunities for amusement such as Janet Heise

with the Guild Festival Theatre and Lee MacLeod

with the Scarborough Horticultural Society.

Membership Chair, Enid Comars, introduces our

guests and invites new members, monthly

birthday celebrants and others to come to the front

for recognition and a photograph to be placed in

our newsletter. It is all intended for FUN and

SOCIAL connections. We even have two draws at

the end of our meetings where the lucky winners

will also have their pictures in the newsletter. We

will introduce some more icebreaker activities in

the future.

Probus-Guildwood and the Future

With Probus-Guildwood, we offer monthly year

round meetings where we socialize and volunteer

with other club members and guests, discover

what’s happening in our neighbourhoods,

particularly through our newsletter, share some

refreshments, listen to informative speakers and

sign up for events and our monthly luncheon. We

are fortunate to have a Volunteer Executive who

coordinate our club meetings and events by

meeting the fourth Wednesday from 1:30 to 3:30

p.m. We really need more people to share their

skills in this capacity, possibly as Co-Executive

Members for President, Vice President, Secretary,

Treasurer and Membership. Sadly, many of us are

performing multiple roles due to lack of additional

club member support. WE will coach YOU.

We also have key members such as Dorothée

McKinlay, who prepares our refreshment table

and newsletter, Jan Eaton who coordinates the

monthly luncheons, Barrie Morgan coordinates

our website, Jane Corry is our Speakers Chair,

Barry Scheffer is our photographer, and Charter

Executive Member, Gerard Baribeau provides

AV, framed guest certificates, finalizes and prints

our newsletter and recycles our refreshment waste.

(would everyone please put waste/recycling in the

correct bin…)

We also have our trusted volunteers who sell the

50/50 draw tickets every month; Cheryn Parry,

Lee Grayhurst and Diane Gamble.

We need YOU to assist or take on a leadership

role for the continuation of our club. Please step

up. Wendy Hooker, Past President.

This is a wonderful Annual Quilt Auction and

Sale on Saturday morning with other yard, food

and plants sales. Travel along Highway 8 to

New Hamburg Fairgrounds, 251 Jacob Street.

All proceeds help communities in need. There is

a Children’s Activity Tent and entertainment.

You can also attend the Opening Friday evening

5 p.m. to review everything in advance. There is

also a fundraiser run Saturday morning. The

village is lovely with residents offering various

garage and plant sales. We often stop at the

town park to watch the birds on the water. If

you are interested in making a quilt or a relief

kit, directions are on the website.

Strange new trend at the office. People putting names on food in the company

fridge. Today I had a tuna sandwich named Kevin.

How many boxes of these 'Thin Mints' do I have to eat before I start seeing results?

Royal Botanical Gardens Trip Saturday June 23 Come along with the Scarborough Garden and

Horticultural Society on to the Royal Botanical

Gardens just outside Hamilton. It’s a series of

gardens full of exotic plants, flowers and trees.

You could spend many days here but we will

concentrate on one day.

Scarborough Garden and Hort is looking

forward to a guided visit to one of two gardens

in the morning – the Rock Garden or the Laking

Garden.

The Rock Garden is home to stunning

perennials, interesting trees and shrubs and

elegant conifers.

The Laking Garden offers iris and peony

collections and a stunning display of clematis

along with hostas, ornamental grasses and

season-long perennials.

In the morning we divide into small groups,

each with a guide to explain the history of each

garden. In the afternoon you are free to wander

or visit the new Rock Garden visitor centre.

The Rockery has paved paths and is ideal for

anyone, especially those with a mobility

disability. Laking Garden is totally grass with a

stunning array of peonies, iris and other spring

flowers.

Our lunch is a delicious deli buffet –

sandwiches, salads, desserts, tea, coffee, decaf

coffee, and soft drinks. In addition, Parkinson

Coach line is providing a luxury bus, all this for

$95. Pick up is Scarborough Village at 8:15 a.m.

Join us for a day in the gardens. You won’t

regret it.

(P.S. we accept cash or cheques but would like

to be paid as soon as possible. See me at the

break or after the meeting.)
