STRIKING THE BALANCING BETWEEN THE GOOD AND BAD

MICROBES TO PROMOTE HEALTH - OMICS GROUP

Page 4: Probiotics & functional foods

The word Probiotic is generated from a Greek Origin. Pro means ‘Promoting’ and Biotic means ‘life’. Although there is no unanimity on how to define it, The Food and Agricultural Organization of (FAO) UN defined it as ‘Live Microorganisms’ if administered in adequate quantity would add health benefits to the host.

Why ‘Probiotics'?

Probiotics play a crucial role in balancing the healthy and good bacteria essential to speed our digestive system, which is often influenced by the food we eat, diseases we are affected with, medicines we consume and the surrounding environment. These factors severely influence the amount of good bacteria required for a healthy living and ‘Probiotics’ steps in to maintain the balance.

Benefits of Probiotics

Probiotics has profound influence on the digestive system that is generally affected by emotional stress, sleeplessness, drug or antibiotic overdose, poor food choices and the other environmental factors. Probiotics maintains the balance and help building our immune system.

Functional Food

A food that serves beyond providing basic nutrients and has a positive effect on our health is called ‘Functional Food’. Although most of the food items we consume offer some or the other nutrients necessary for the body, functional food offers additional benefits that promotes optimal health.
