Tampa Heralds of Harmony sing a couple songs at the afterglow Saturday night after all the compition was done.

Fans get their seats as Heralds prepare for their final event of the evening.

Fueling up! Heralds members Rich Casanzio, Ed McKenzie and Jerry Tobin relax for just a moment with some pizza before dazzling the crowd at the afterglow.

More Heralds await the grand finale. Left to right: Don Messler, Casey Jones, Keith Starks (face obscured), Matt Crisostomo, Ralph Brown, Chris Rodgers, and Art McNeil.

Jerry Tobin, Joe Plumlee, Mystery Herald, Marty Jahnel, and Steve Cragg

Dave Roberts addresses the audience at the afterglow while trying to decide if Byron Poore should be the emcee for the evening.

Group sing!

A tired Larry Clapp smiles for the camera. So handsome.

Dick Murbach, Art McNeil, Chris Rodgers, and Bill Glasgow eat, drink, and are merry.

Congratulations Champs! What a weekend! This is just the beginning!

We are an A-level chorus in all competition categories! I hope you can tell that I am excited with all the preceding short bursts or sentences.

Personally, this is the start of a long-term dream which was affirmed by Tony in that ‘he can and will lead us to the GOLD.’ It will be a step-by-step, year-to-year deal; but, oh the journey will be so much fun.

There’s a lot to be decided with how we proceed. We need to take our ‘combined’ power and bring that to our upcoming Christmas shows.

Yes, we want our new Big O members on stage performing in Tampa at the USF December 13 Christmas shows, then we take the entire chorus to the Jacksonville Christmas show on the December 20. This brings an exciting dynamic to both Tampa and Jacksonville by having eighty to a hundred singers on all shows.

Our two chapter Boards will decide how to proceed. Let’s have some fun!

Okay, so not too many guests showed up for the October 13 rehearsal, but a lot of food did and it didn’t disappoint. In a curve ball, the invitation to the food table was opened before the Angels actually opened it. But hey, we’re all family so dig in!

QUALIFYING

In My Opinionby Roxanne Clapp, Editor

In another development created from the 2014 PROBE International Bulletin Contest, I’ve learned that I should be including some opinion pieces in the monthly bulletin. I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but I solicit information for the bulletin in each issue. I don’t receive much information from the general membership so I’m guessing in my opinion you don’t want to share your opinions. That leaves this wide open to me sharing mine. There is one way to keep that from happening from now on, and that is for you to share yours!

PROBE-ing AroundDo old newsletters/bulletins for Tampa exist? Other than the ones posted on the Heralds’ website dating back to 2011? Before those, I know there were some. Editor extraordinaire, Brad Grabill, did a newsletter weekly (amazing!) but I’m not sure how far back that dates. I know it was happening when Larry and I were introduced to Barbershop in 2010. So, where are the older issues? Can they be located? Or are they lost and we hope one day they will be uncovered, like ruins in an Egyptian desert, to be added to our History files?

This has come about because, according to PROBE gurus, (Public Relations Officers and Bulletin Editors,) we should be using Volume and Issue numbers on the newsletter.

Volume and Issue: Issues published within a single year normally compose one volume. Volumes are normally numbered in sequential order, with each new volume having its number increment by “1,“ while issue numbering restarts from “1” for each new volume.

I thought I should start this now with Volume 69, Issue 10 since this is our 69th year in charter, and October is the 10th month. But then I got to wondering, is that the proper thing to do? Where is, for instance, Volume 15, Issue 2? It may not even exist. I see another project on the horizon!

Maybe the Chapter Historian, Dave Roberts, will want to weigh in on this. For now, I’m going with Volume 69, Issue 10 for this issue. Feel free to chime in.

To all Heralds of Harmony Angels, BOD, families and friends!

The Heralds of Harmony need volunteers on Saturday, December 13, 2014, to sup-port their two Christmas performances, “A CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION.” Please call or email me as soon as possible if you are willing to help and your area of preference. We have several areas needing volunteers. If you know someone who would enjoy volunteering to help the Chorus, send them our way.

To all Heralds: If you are not singing, please consider helping in the lobby, assisting preferred ticket hold-ers in the auditorium with seating in designated areas, or with back stage guidance to the pre-show.

Rehearsal Note Summary

(Continued on next page)

Active HoH Members, watch your inbox for weekly rehearsal notes sent out by The Colonel, Russ Powell.

Rehearsal Notes, September 15, 2014. aAnother great rehearsal as we prepare for the third combined rehearsal this weekend on Saturday, September 20. Everyone is looking forward to this weekend’s combined chorus opportunity. The anticipation is building as we continue to hone our vocal and choreo skills in preparation for this exciting event prior to competition. Special recognition to the financial wizards, Steve Stenzler and Paul Stiles, for winning yet another Hillsborough Arts Council grant award. Also, congratulations to our newest member and former Herald, Charlie Nelson, a welcome addition to the Baritone section.

aThanks to Ralph and Drew for the excellent choreo run-throughs. Drew says we can transform the “DEATH POCKETS” into “DEPTH POCKETS” with more moving triangles, keeping it in the plane with stable body angles, and more “PRE-SEN-TATE.”

aBig picture stuff or vocal instruction 101: The context was Lord Bless You, but the application is universal for any song. Refresh the key center to the brighter side of the pitch at the beginning of each segment, section, chorus, verse, bridge, etc.; new presence of sound, new room of sound with lifted breath. This provides more substance and more key interest into the new section with a lifted, refreshed tonal center.

aThis Saturday: Third combined rehearsal at Tuskawilla Presbyterian Church; 3600 Aloma Avenue; Oviedo, FL 32765. Review the contest set plus Smile, Lord Bless, “Birthday of a King,” and Tonight. Don’t be surprised if we sing a Christmas song or two from our shared repertoire. Chorus call at 9 a.m. — on the risers at 9:30 a.m.

CHOREOGRAPHY• ”As I watch you go” is a firm, chest move. No hands!• Can’t stop the upward motion on the end of “First Hello.”• Release “sto-one” on your right foot so you can move left (Slow Boat).• The softer I sing, the more I pull with the emotion.

VOCAL TECHNIQUE• Keep the air moving, the physicality going CONTINUOUSLY. Never

stop, send sound!• Present the look of the sound on the breath; come after the first note

with a well-prepared breath!• Barbershop placement: Jerry Lewis forward, Luciano Pavarotti tall...

VOCAL FREEDOM is everything.• Stay away from your comfortable range when warming up in your

own daily vocal regimen... Then bring the height and lightness to the more comfortable range.

• Bs/Br: sure up the forward clarity as you descend• Br: Add lead/tenor lift more than bass resonance.

• Revel in the sound you’re making- it’s really good. :-)

FROM THE FIRST HELLO• The message is simple, and doesn’t have to be “guy-girl.” • The intro’s focus is “you & me” ... be specific with your visual and vocal

delivery.• Be more engaged through “life’s blessings with YOU”• Personal pronouns- you, I, we, our, my- have to be more deliberate

and have much more meaning.• Bs: “dear and sweet”: the low notes are more important, and should

be louder than, the high notes.• Bs/Br: “to the LAST”: crescendo BEFORE the move (this is before the

key change).• Ld: on the key change, the note diminishes in value, but continues to

present physically.• Br: lift, stay present and soft on the key change.• ”You’ll be always there”: crescendo through the line. Take the subject

and pull them through Tony.• Ld: NO BREATH before the “goodbye” post.• Bs/Br: Don’t drop your jaw from “to” to “the”• The individual chaos of “to the last” makes the unity of the upward

move on “last” REALLY important (leading into the tag).

SLOW BOAT TO CHINA• The bridge needs to just ‘be’, and not be worked.• Could use more growth at “melting your HEART” in bridge.• Stay soft on the “I’m gonna melt your beautiful heart” echo.• Crescendo through “sto-one, I”• The purpose of the song is in the 3 penultimate words: ALL TO

MYSELF.

• Bs: no “Elvis” on the tag!

THE LORD BLESS YOU

• Big aperture vowel to a small aperture vowel (i.e., “u-PON YOU”): roll forward!

TONIGHT• ”doo-doo to-NIGHT”: Bs/Br: key shift higher!• Get under the last chord, and continue to move!

BIRTHDAY OF A KING• More dynamic movement throughout the intro.

Rehearsal Notes, September 22, 2014aGreat night of singing. “Jingle Bells” really good. Caroling: still need to learn words. Needed higher side of pitch all night!! Election next week. Former Herald leaders, Bob Lang and Bill Fowler, back for visit. Check with Matt if you don’t have a purple tie.

sFirst Hello.

Review Intro. Here is our opportunity to make a good impression with all the lift we can muster. True pitch gives us more glitter and more shine. Here is where we win or lose points due to sagging or uplifted pitch. Required: Constant, steady supply of lift. Painstakingly lifting!!!

Special treat: Ms 61. Head movement on “Special Treat.”

No hands at key change. Proud chest. Pick-up to ms 73 “As I watch you go....”

Colossal reset: ms 80 on quarter note rest right before: “You’ll be al-ways there....” Practice in front of mirror.

sSlow Boat. Row-by-row choreo — awareness of personal delivery.

This really puts you on the spot in the limelight. Just ask Danny W. Unobstructed view of your personal delivery. Need more individual step-up. Study the video for an enhanced performance next week.

“Out on the briney” vamp: Create a different look; less angry fists and hacking arms; more suave look — more laid back, cool look.

aVOWELS. Get to the vowels and *HOLD* on to the vowel target until the last possible second, especially on the ballad. Hold the pure vowel as long as possible, whatever the word is and don’t let the vowel erode away or leave the word sound too early.

aPreparation for next week: Review rehearsal video, contest set, “Little Drummer Boy,” “Birthday of a King,” sectionals on “ Believe.” All convention material for next Monday: Smile, Tonight, Lord Bless.

Rehearsal Notes, September 29, 2014. aWe are growing:  We now have 64 active members and we need new risers to accommodate our rapid growth.  Be a “Friend of the Heralds” if you want to help.  Election slate accepted by acclamation.  Congratulations to the new officers for next year.  Newly minted name badges were presented to four new members.   Welcome to Marty Jahnel, Charlie Nelson, and brothers, Greg and Terry Garvin.   Guest night planned for  October 13.  Special recognition was givento Assistant Director and Baritone Section Leader, Chris Barthauer, who was awarded the “Barbershopper of the Month” for August.

aCulture shock:  Our culture is definitely shifting, but sometimes it slows down a little or is hindered by small obstructions like faces and bodies that don’t seem to get the big picture or qualification deadlines that are not met.  The vision of the Music Team is moving in a great way.

We need YOU to continue to buy-in to the system with more trust and more responsiveness.  Take pride in all your delivery and don’t be ‘THAT GUY!’

aPRE-SEN-TATE more:

Are you waiting for a special invitation to get involved?  Are you still engaged between the moves?  Be engaged like you WANT to be there.  Deficient engagement will separate us from an “A” performance.  We need even more passion in our delivery!  Keep selling all the time!  What happens to your face between moves?  Check and double check your facial expressions in front of a mirror while you run the set.  See for yourself what other people

are seeing.  Fill your square with more commanding delivery; no need to be small or timid.  It is now all about our visual performance.  We should be brimming with confidence about now, so it is OK to PRE-SEN-TATE all the time, not just during the choreo.  (Watch and study Drew’s video.)  We have the notes, we have the words, we have the moves, so it is time to put together a cohesive visual package, in our personal square, that is convincing and believable all the time.

aSong note:

sFirst Hello:  In the ballad intro, be aware of tuning and pitch accuracy on each Pillar chord or held chord.  The notes in each Pillar chord must line up like a column or pillar with clarity of sound.  These are significant chord moments with emotional impact.   Each pillar chord is a special chord moment or an opportunity to lock and ring with clarity.

“New friendships we will be starting, but deep, in my heart I will say.”    Although we breathe after “deep,” we need to deliver the whole phrase as one emotion.  Put a rainbow over the whole phrase.  We are breathing after “deep” for impact, but we need to be thinking emotionally over the whole phrase.

aCompetition weekend:   October 10-11.  Qualification deadline  Nov. 13 for All Christmas songs.  “Believe” qualification, Oct 27.  Your Section Leader is there to help you, but it is up to YOU to get’er done.

Rehearsal Notes, October 6, 2014aAnother great rehearsal reviewing performance details in readiness for this weekend. The time has arrived for the much anticipated competition weekend where everyone is excited to see what the combined chorus can do. Extensive preparations have been made and we should now be on top of our game. Get plenty of rest and water.

aWatch the Director. Tony gives us excellent direction with his arms and hands. Watch Tony’s left hand for harmony part direction. Watch for held notes, phrases and sound cut-offs.

aSong Notes:

sSlow Boat.

Tempo. Hold notes and phrases for full value or you are likely to come in early on the next phrase. Coming in early will mess up the tempo!! Hold all the way to the end of the phrase. Don’t let go too soon. Don’t leave early. Energize through the phrase.

Barely audible Basses and other harmony parts in ms 49 on Lead post. While Lead posts, harmony parts barely audible on “I’m gonna melt your beautiful heart....”

sFirst Hello.

Crescendo on “there” in tag. Need to grow on “there” in ms 82.

aFREEDOM RINGS. Sing with FREEDOM for best ring and lock. Sing with relaxed, open, uplifted vocal mechanism with plenty of air flow and support. Ring collapses if singing is forced or compressed downward on vocal mechanism.

aWALL OF SOUND. Matching air flow in each singer for full resonance.

Velcro your sound to guys around you. Same volume of air produced by each singer causes your individual sound to adhere into a collective  “WALL OF SOUND.”

a NOSE PAINT (No make-up necessary). Paint with your nose for a very expressive face. Keep face moving and active for more Pre-Sen-Tating.

Rehearsal Notes, October 13, 2014a Guest night and celebration of our outstanding performance in Orlando. Ribbons for ‘International Chorus Representative’ and ‘Most Improved Chorus’ were made available. Watched video and worked on several Christmas songs including “Joy To the World,” Caroling, “Jingle Bells,” “ Believe,” Drummer Boy, and “Emmanuel.” Dick Sipple was recognized for his many operational management contributions to the Heralds over the past several years.

a Run to Pittsburgh and Beyond. The District Convention was an empowering experience. A magnificent display of strength and discipline as two chapters joined ranks, in partnership, to produce an internationally competitive chorus. Suddenly, we have arrived in a new place where the sky is the limit if we would consistently employ the skills that Tony has taught us. Our success has demonstrated that we are on the right track, so the expectation level is likely to rise rapidly as we run toward Pittsburgh and beyond. Congratulations to the Heralds for this landmark achievement, a noteworthy beginning of a partnership that is likely to achieve even more spectacular things together down the road. The judges can’t wait to see what we put on stage in Pittsburgh!! Pow!!!

a We are a combined chorus. Participation on the Jacksonville Show on December 20 is recommended and will contribute to the growth of our partnership. Show at 3 p.m., riser call 11 a.m. Of course, this is above and beyond our two performance dates of December 7 and 13!!!!

a Wash of Sound: Air driven, freely produced. Tons of air: Sound is being washed over you with no one point hitting you stronger than anything else; character of your individual sound goes away and becomes part of the total unit sound, a lot of space with forward placement.

a “Believe:” More theater in your story telling; tell it like you are telling it to a child rather than an adult audience.

aQualification Deadlines: “Believe” — October 27.

Final new learn for the Christmas Show: “Angels We Have Heard On High” — qualification deadline, November 17.

Overall qualification deadline for all other Christmas Show music — November 13.

a No rehearsal next week on October 20. This will be an excellent opportunity to recharge our batteries and gather strength as we recommit to our “hobby” in preparation for what lies ahead. Prepare 14 songs and get performance-ready for the Christmas shows. You can no longer assume that you already know the notes and words. Always test your memory at home before you come to rehearsal. Tony reminds us that it is NOT fun if you don’t know your music.

Reconvene October 27 with most qualifications in hand.

What is Your Footprint?by Chuck Steiner

Please be aware of your “personal smell footprint”!

What is worse than being trapped for three to four hours next to someone with bad breath or a pungent body odor?

It is critically important that chorus members practice appropriate hygiene by bathing regularly and using deodorants. Proper garment care is also highly encouraged (i.e. no moldy/mildew smells, smoky or unlaundered clothing…etc.).

We are often in very close proximity to each other and it is very important that chorus members take the time to be thoughtful and considerate regarding personal hygiene. As we continue to grow in numbers, our guests and new members need to know that they are joining an organization that prides itself on not only our vocal and performing skills, but one that presents itself as a clean bunch of guys!

This is being mentioned for a reason…not just on a whim. Thank YOU for your cooperation!

Carbs: What’s the big deal? Carbohydrates. “Carbs.” What are they and why do some people try to avoid them?

Carbohydrates are one of the three major macro-nutrients, the other two being fats and proteins. They are called “carbohydrates” because of their molecular

chemistry: they’re made mostly of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen,

in various configurations. Dietarily, “carbs” generally

means things with a high proportion of complex carbohydrates (cereals, bread, pasta) or simple carbs (sugar, candy, many desserts).

Carbs drive up your blood-sugar, which

drives up your insulin levels. Insulin is a big regulator in how your cells take in energy (i.e. sugar). If you’re active “right now,” insulin helps power your muscles; if you’re not, insulin helps store that energy in your fat cells.

All of this is completely natural and normal. So what’s the problem? Well, there’s a lot of evidence that chronically high insulin is a significant contributor to disease, aging, weight-gain, and obesity.

Two diseases linked to and exacerbated by chronic high insulin levels and insulin resistance are Alzheimer’s Disease and cancer. Insulin contributes to the damage that over time turns into Alzheimer’s; some have even called it “Type 3 diabetes”. And chronic high insulin provides a very fertile environment for the growth of many kinds of cancer, which by nature tend to require a lot of energy.

And all that aside, excess free energy is stored as fat.

Carbs -> higher blood sugar -> insulin -> neurological damage / fertile environment for uncontrolled cell growth / fat storage.

Two simple (though not always easy) steps you can take to reduce carbs and refined sugars in your diet are to eliminate soda/sugary drinks, and gluten grains and wheat flour.
