Some Other Facts

27% percent of motorcycle riders involved in fatal accidents had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) over 0.08 percent.

36% of all bikers involved in fatal crashes were speeding.

26% of bikers involved in fatal crashes were riding without a valid license.

Recent Numbers

There are roughly 75% more registered motorcycles than 10 years ago.

That means there is about 7,266,758 in 2009.

Each motorcycle travels approximately 692 miles. Assuming the total miles traveled is at 10,500.

We expect that of the 7,266,758 registered motorcycles, 5,427 will be involved in a fatal accident in 2009.

About 1,682 will be under the age of 30 group, and 454 of them were drunk.

Wearing a helmet could have saved 2,008 of those 5,427 people’s lives.

Conclusion Wearing a helmet may be optional in Pennsylvania, but we

would strongly suggest wearing one every time you ride.

Wearing a helmet can be the difference between life and death.

NHTSA estimates that motorcycle helmets reduce the likelihood of crash fatality by 37%.

Helmet use has declined by 20% over five years, from 2001 to 2006.

Other factors to motorcycle safety include the proper training, no speeding, and never mix alcohol and riding.
