MOTORCYCLE RIDING IS DANGEROUS

Motorcyclists are unlicensed, improperly licensed, or untrained

Wearing dark clothing so they are not well visible

Drunk driving Bad weather Driving without helmet Driving too fast

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY

Motorcycle accidents keep increasing

National Safety Council (NSA)

There were 5,154 motorcycle fatalities nationwide (in 2007).

Motorcyclist fatalities reached 5,290 in 2008, accounting for 14% of total crash fatalities

Motorcycle accidents increasing by 2.6% every year

MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS

12 million motor vehicle accidents annually

including more than 20 million vehicles.

This results in over 5 million nonfatal accidents.

About 46,000 deaths annually from motor-vehicle accidents.

Some Other Facts

36% of all bikers involved in fatal crashes were speeding.

26% of bikers involved in fatal crashes were riding without a valid license.

Recent Numbers

There are roughly 75% more registered motorcycles than 10 years ago.

That means there is about 7,266,758 in 2009.

Each motorcycle travels approximately 692 miles. Assuming the total miles traveled is at 10,500.

Continued…

We expect that of the 7,266,758 registered motorcycles, 5,427 will be involved in a fatal accident in 2009.

About 1,682 will be under the age of 30 group, and 454 of them were drunk.

Wearing a helmet could have saved 2,008 of those 5,427 people’s lives.

Conclusion Wearing a helmet may be optional in Pennsylvania, but we

would strongly suggest wearing one every time you ride.

Wearing a helmet can be the difference between life and death.

NHTSA estimates that motorcycle helmets reduce the likelihood of crash fatality by 37%.

Helmet use has declined by 20% over five years, from 2001 to 2006.

Other factors to motorcycle safety include the proper training, no speeding, and never mix alcohol and riding.

After seeing over 5,000 deaths from motorcycles we hope you will think twice before leaving your helmet behind.
