Professional Competition Anglo American Platinum Limited in conjunction with Metal Concentrators invites you to enter the PlatAfrica 2015 Jewellery Design Competition. The competition is open to jewellers working in South Africa. South Africans of Indian origin are the world's largest non-immigrant Indian population outside of India. The history of South Africa’s vibrant Indian community started many, many years ago in the Cape and the cane fields of Natal… The first Indians arrived in 1684 during the Dutch colonial era as slaves. Many came from Bengal, Bihar and Malabar. The British abolished slavery in 1833 and though the Cape was a British colony at the time, it wasn’t until December 1834 that the emancipation of slaves in South Africa took place. Over 150 years ago, in 1860, indentured labour replaced slavery but in name only. By the 1890s, indentured Indian labour gave way to "passenger" immigrants. Workers of all kinds came to find formal employment and by the 1920s, established merchant families had also found their way to South Africa. In 1961, Indians were finally officially recognised as a permanent part of the South African population. Indian South Africans are predominantly Hindu, but the community includes Muslims, Christians, and Sikhs. The diverse Indian population of over one million people have carved themselves a home here and are a vibrant part of South Africa’s multi-cultural society. Indian influences have contributed to the multi-cultural diversity of South Africa. Regardless of the distance from Durban to Mumbai, South African Indians retain a sense of cultural and social connection to India which is the inspiration for the PlatAfrica 2015 theme – Indian Bridal Jewellery. Fact box: Jewellery represents the second largest demand segment for platinum contributing 35% of gross demand in 2014. India has been the fastest growing market for platinum jewellery, growing by 36% in 2012, 29% in 2013 and 25% in 2014 (Johnson Matthey). Compared to the universal appeal of gold, the platinum jewellery market in India is niche, with platinum pitched as “premium jewellery” with respect to gold especially amongst the young, urban clientele. Furthermore, India is the least price sensitive of the platinum jewellery markets as buyers see the metal as a store of value. A premium price for platinum jewellery over gold helps to maintain platinum’s attraction. Source: Ashburton Investments March 2015
