Basic Introduction - Lab Exercises To access and download the model data needed for the following exercises, please visit:

Introduction In this demonstration, we preview models and documents using the embedded Web browser in

the Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire interface. Using the Pro/E Wildfire navigator, we can preview all the

assembly components of any model before opening it. These simple features save a lot of time in

the design process.

Exercise 1: Preview, Opening, Orientation, and Selection Objectives

After successfully completing this exercise, you will know how to:

• Preview and open design models

• Orient models and select features

• Locate design data using the Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire navigator.

Scenario

Cordless Power Tools, Inc. (CPT) designs and manufactures hand-held power tools, including cordless drills, circular saws, and hammer drills. CPT is currently developing a new cordless drill that uses a gasoline-powered two-cycle engine instead of a battery-powered electric motor. The gasoline-powered engine produces more power than a battery-operated motor. It is marketed to commercial and industrial customers requiring drills that have a high torque capacity for drilling through steel and concrete, and a higher MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) ratings. The gas-powered drill lasts four to five times longer than battery-powered drills, and can also be used in locations without a reliable power supply.

The CPT engineering design team completed its first gas-powered drill prototype assembly. The pre-production design review identified several problems with the virtual assembly. The engineering department manager has assigned you to correct these problems. Before you can implement any design modifications, you must review the existing drill components. You navigate to the latest design model, and then open and review the assembly components.

Step 1. Open an Assembly

1. Start Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire.

2. Notice the browser has defaulted to the Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire ‘landing’ page. This web page contains useful links to demos, tutorials, and reference materials.

3. Using the folder navigator, browse to the following location: c:\users\student\Introduction.

4. Select the Introduction folder to view its contents, right-click on the folder and select Make Working Directory.

5. Select the AC-40.ASM to view its preview. Click the Open File in Pro/E icon next to the preview window. Use the toolbar to turn off the display of all datum features, if necessary.

Step 2. Experiment with mouse orientation.

7. Select ENGINE_BLOCK.PRT from the graphics window, right-click and select Open.

8. Spin the model using Middle-Drag. Pan using SHIFT +

Middle-Drag. Press CTRL-D to orient to the default view.

9. Zoom by using CTRL+Middle-Drag (vertically). Zoom by using the mouse wheel. Press CTRL-D to orient to the default view.

Note: Refer to your quick reference card for orientation commands.

Step 3. Experiment with selection.

10. Select any hole from the ENGINE_BLOCK.PRT.

11. Press CTRL and select 2 other features of your choice. Press CTRL and de-select the original hole.

12. Select on the background to de-select all features.

Note: Repainting the screen does NOT de-select items.

13. Click File > Close Window return to the AC-40.ASM.

14. Expand the 1_ENGINE.ASM in the model tree and select the CRANKSHAFT.PRT. Select on the background to de-select it.

15. In the graphics window, cursor over the CRANKSHAFT.PRT. Right-click to query to the CRANKSHAFT.PRT, and select it.

16. Deselect the model by selecting on the background.

17. Click File > Close Window.

Exercise 2: Creating Part Models Objectives

After successfully completing this exercise, you will know how to:

• Create Holes, Rounds, Chamfers, and Shells

• Create Extruded and Revolved features

• Edit Features

Step 1. Create PISTON.PRT. Create the main body of the model.

1. Click File > New > Part. Enter PISTON_2 and click OK.

2. Display datum planes and axes using the toolbar.

3. Start the Extrude tool, and create a section using the dashboard icon. Select TOP as the sketching plane, and click Sketch. Close the references dialog and sketch as shown in the figure.

4. Complete the sketch and press CTRL-D to orient to the default view. Flip the depth direction, and enter the depth of 18.5 as shown in the figure. Complete the feature.

Step 2. Create a cut to hollow out the PISTON.PRT for the CONNECTING_ROD.PRT.

1. Start the Extrude tool and create a section using the dashboard icon. Select the bottom surface of the model as a sketching plane, and orient the RIGHT plane to face Right. Click Sketch, and sketch as shown.

2. Complete the sketch and press CTRL-D to orient to the default view. Flip the depth direction, and toggle the feature to Remove Material. Drag the Depth handle and then enter the depth of 16.5 as shown in the figure. Complete the feature.

1. Start the Datum Plane tool. Select datum TOP. Drag the Offset handle and specify an offset of –8 as shown in the figure. Complete the feature.

2. Display Datum Axes if necessary.

3. With the previous plane still selected, press CTRL and select datum RIGHT. Start the Datum Axis tool to create the axis as shown in the figure.

4. With the previous axis still selected, start the Hole tool. Right-click and select Secondary References Collector. Select datum FRONT.

5. Right-click on the Depth handle to specify a depth of Through All. Select the Shape tab and specify a depth of Through All for Side2. Enter a diameter of 5, and complete the feature as shown in the figure.

6. Save the model and close the window.

Step 4. Edit a protrusion on the end of the CONNECTING_ROD.PRT to support the

CRANKSHAFT.PRT

2. Select the CRANK_END protrusion from the model tree, right-click and select Edit Definition. Specify a symmetric depth of 6 as shown in the figure, and complete the feature.

Step 5. Create a round to add strength.

1. Start the Round tool. Select the main front surface of the model, press CTRL and select the edge shown in the figure. Enter a radius of 3 and complete the feature.

Step 6. Create a lubrication hole on the CRANKSHAFT.PRT end of the model.

1. Start the Hole tool. Select a location on the cylindrical surface as shown in the figure.

2. Right-click and select Secondary References Collector. Select the TOP datum plane, press CTRL and select the front surface of the end protrusion. Enter an angle of 45, an offset of –3, and a diameter of 2. Specify a depth of To Next, and complete the feature as shown in the figure.

3. Save the model and close the window.

Step 7. Edit features on the CRANKSHAFT.PRT.

1. Open the CRANKSHAFT_2.PRT.

2. Select the OVAL group in the model tree. Expand the group to examine its contents.

3. Select DTM1, right-click and select Edit. Edit the angle to 45 degrees and click the Regenerate icon on the toolbar.

4. Select the protrusion within the group, right-click and select Edit Definition. Toggle the feature to Remove Material, and set the depth to Through All. Complete the feature as shown in the figure.

Step 8. Create a cut to reduce the diameter of the end of the shaft.

1. Start the Revolve tool. Create a section using the dashboard icon. Select datum RIGHT as a sketching plane, and orient the TOP plane to face Top. Click Sketch, and select the upper and left surfaces as references. Sketch a horizontal centerline on the center axis and then sketch as shown in the figure.

2. Complete the sketch and press CTRL-D to orient to the default view. Toggle the feature to Remove Material, and revolve 360 degrees as shown in the figure.

1. Start the Chamfer tool. Select the first edge shown, and enter the chamfer value of 0.5. Press CTRL and select the second edge. Complete the feature.

Step 10. Create Rounds on the crankshaft lobe.

1. Start the Round tool. Select the first upper edge, press CTRL and select the second upper edge as shown in the figure. Enter a radius of 2.

2. Select the first lower edge, press CTRL and select the second lower edge. Enter a radius of 4 as shown in the figure. Complete the feature.

3. Start the Round tool again. Select the first edge, press CTRL and select the second edge. Enter a radius of 1. Complete the feature.

4. Save the model and close the window.

Step 11.

1. Open the IMPELLER_HOUSING_2.PRT.

2. Start the Shell tool. Select the surface for the rectangular opening, then press CTRL and select the surface for the circular opening, as shown in the figure.

3. Specify a shell thickness of 2, and complete the feature.

4. Save the model and close the window.

1. Open the FRAME_2.PRT.

2. Start the Hole tool. Select a location in the upper right corner, as shown in the figure.

4. Right-click and select Secondary References Collector. Select the rear surface, press CTRL, and select the right surface to create the dimensioning scheme, as shown in the figure.

5. Drag the depth handle to approximately 5, then right-click and select To Next. Enter a diameter of 3, and complete the feature.

6. Orient to the default view.

7. Select the part node from the model tree. Start the Mirror tool, and select the RIGHT plane. Complete the feature as shown in the figure.

8. Save the model and close the w

Step 13. Create a feature suitable

1. Open the IMPELLER_2.PRT

2. Start the Extrude tool. With the dashboard open, start the DatumPlane tool and select the FRONplane. Drag the offset handle anenter the offset of 40, as shownin the figure. Select the Properties tab, and name the plane WIDTH. Complete the feature.

3. With the dashboard still open, start the datum plane tool again. Select the center axis, press CTRL and select datum TOP. Enter the angle of 30 and complete the feature as shown.

4. Resume the dashboard. Create a section using the dashboard icon, and select the front surface of the protrusion as a sketching plane. Select the previous angled datum plane (DTM1) as the reference, and orient it to face Top. Click Sketch.

5. Reference the horizontal datum plane and the outer cylindrical surface. Sketch a line and a center-ends arc.

6. Complete the sketch and press CTRL-D to orient to the default view. Specify the Thicken Sketch option, and enter a thickness 1.5. Flip the thickness direction twice to the inside of the ‘L’ shape. Set a depth of To Selected and select the WIDTH plane. Complete the feature as shown in the figure.

7. Notice an Auto-Group has been created in the model tree. Examine its contents. Figure 29: Creating a Protrusion

Step 14. Duplicate the feature using a pattern.

1. Select the previous group, and start the Pattern tool.

2. Select the 30 degree dimension and enter 60 as the increment. Enter a quantity of 6 in the dashboard. Complete the pattern, as shown in the figure.

3. Save the model and close the window.

This completes the exercise.

Exercise 3: Creating Assemblies Objectives

After successfully completing this exercise, you will know how to:

• Create simple assemblies

• Create and run a basic Mechanism

Step 1. Create the ENGINE.ASM.

1. Click File > New > Assembly. Enter ENGINE as the name and click OK.

2. Click Insert > Component > Assemble. Select ENGINE_BLOCK.PRT, and click Open.

3. Click the Default constraint icon and click OK. Turn off display of all datum features if necessary.

4. Assemble CRANKSHAFT.PRT. Select the two surfaces as shown in the figure; this action creates a Mate constraint automatically.

5. Select the two surfaces shown in the following figure, this action creates an Insert constraint automatically.

Note: The rotation position of the CRANKSHAFT.PRT is not important at this stage.

6. Click OK. Save the model and close the window.

Step 2. Create the PROJECT.ASM.

1. Create a new assembly named PROJECT.ASM.

2. Assemble FRAME.PRT using a default constraint.

3. Assemble ENGINE.ASM. Press CTRL-ALT and right-drag to position the engine above the FRAME.

4. Select cylindrical hole surfaces from the ENGINE_BLOCK and the FRAME to create an Insert constraint. Repeat to create another Insert constraint. Select mating surfaces to create a Mate constraint. Click OK when finished. Refer to the figure.

5. Assemble BLOWER.ASM. Select appropriate surfaces to create two insert constraints and a mate constraint. Refer to the figure.

Step 3. Assemble Bolts

1. Assemble BOLT_2.PRT. Drag the component to an approximate position.

2. Select insert and mating surfaces from each component respectively. Refer to the figure.

3. Assemble a second BOLT_2.prt. Select the TMP_INTFC001 interface and click OK. Select insert and mating surfaces from the engine block to assemble as shown in the figure.

4. Assemble a third BOLT_2.prt. Select the TMP_INTFC001 interface and click Autoplace. Select a location just inside the hole shown in the figure to place the bolt.

5. Click Apply and then select the next location, shown in the figure. Click OK when finished.

6. Configure the screen so that the Folder Navigator and the model are both visible. Select the BOLT_2.PRT from the Folder Navigator and drag directly into the two locations.

Step 4. OPTIONAL: Complete the assembly by adding mechanism connections.

1. Select the ENGINE.ASM from the model tree, right-click and select Open.

2. Click View > Color and Appearance. From the dialog, click File > Open. Select the project_palette.dmt file and click Open > Override All. Select the Silver_Transparent appearance and apply to the ENGINE_BLOCK.PRT. Click OK.

3. Select the CRANKSHAFT.PRT, right-click and select Edit Definition. Click Connections. Notice that the Insert and Mate constraints are converted into a Pin joint. Click OK to complete the redefinition.

1. Assemble PISTON.ASM. Click connections and select Slider as the type.

2. Select the cylindrical surfaces from the PISTON.PRT and the ENGINE_BLOCK.PRT for the Axis Alignment constraint. Press CTRL-ALT and right-drag to locate the PISTON.ASM above the ENGINE_BLOCK.

3. Start the Search tool. Select the Look In icon and select the PISTON.ASM. Click Find Now, select the ASM_FRONT datum plane, and click OK.

4. Start the Search tool again. Click Find Now, select the ASM_FRONT datum plane, and click OK. Click OK to complete the connection. Refer to the figure.

1. Assemble CONNECTING_ROD.PRT. Click Connections and select Pin as the type.

2. Select the cylindrical surface of the hole (the one without the radial hole) on the CONNECTING_ROD.PRT. Query and select a cylindrical surface on the PISTON_PIN.

3. Use the Search tool to find the FRONT datum planes from the PISTON_ASM and the CONNECTING_ROD.PRT. Do not complete the component yet. Refer to the figure. (Your mechanism may default to a different position).

4. Without closing the Component Placement dialog, Add a second connection and select Cylinder as the type. Select the cylindrical surface from the remaining hole on the CONNECTING_ROD.PRT.

5. Query and select the cylindrical surfaces of the pin on the CRANKSHAFT. Click OK to complete the connection. Refer to the figure.

6. Save the assembly. Close the window to return to the PROJECT.ASM.

Figure 45: Engine Connections Complete Step 7. OPTIONAL: Connect the IMPELLER.PRT to the CRANKSHAFT.PRT.

1. From the PROJECT.ASM window, select the BLOWER.ASM, right-click and select Edit Definition.

2. Click Connections to convert the existing mate and insert constraints to a Rigid connection.

3. Add a connection, and select Planar as the type. Select the planar surfaces on the CRANKSHAFT.PRT and the IMPELLER.PRT as shown in the figure.

4. Click OK to complete the redefinition.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I need to complete a registration or licensing process before I can use the Tryout Edition? YES. Before using Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Tryout Edition users must do two things:

1. Obtain a PTC online account. If you do not already have one you may get one here. (http://www.ptc.com/appserver/common/account/basic.jsp) Your username will be the email address you provide.

2. Register your Tryout Edition software. During the Tryout Edition installation process, click on the software registration link. Once you complete the on-line registration process, a license file will be sent by e-mail; therefore, a valid e-mail address is required. You will use this license file when installing the software. Please ensure that your mailbox is not full before requesting a license file.

2. How are the Tryout Editions licensed? The Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Tryout Editions are licensed for personal or educational use only. All Tryout Edition customers must accept an electronic license agreement during the online registration process before receiving the Tryout Edition license file.

3. Why does the error "The page cannot be displayed" appear in my web browser after I select "Create a New License File" in PTC.Setup? The error is received because DNS on the machine requesting the license file is not configured properly. This issue can be resolved by doing one of the following:

1. Remove the DNS suffix from the URL and refresh the page. For example, change http://<customershostname>.<dnssuffix>:8080/PS_TRANSLATE?filename=webreg.html to http://<customershostname>:8080/PS_TRANSLATE?filename=webreg.html --OR-- Replace the fully qualified Hostname in the URL with the word 'localhost' and refresh the page. Ex. http://localhost:8080/PS_TRANSLATE?filename=webreg.html

2. Configure DNS properly and make sure that the DNS suffix listed in TCP/IP Advanced Properties ("DNS suffix for this connection") is the correct DNS suffix for that machine

4. Are Tryout Edition files compatible with Commercial Licenses of Pro/ENGINEER? NO. Files created within the Tryout Edition cannot be opened with commercially licensed Pro/ENGINEER. Conversely, files created with commercially licensed Pro/ENGINEER cannot be opened with the Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Tryout Edition. The Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Tryout Edition is designed to help users enhance their Pro/E Wildfire skills; it is not intended for commercial use.

5. What are the differences between the Commercial version and the Tryout Edition? The Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Tryout Edition includes features that make it uniquely suited for short-term evaluations. The differences from the commercial software are:

1. The Tryout Edition has a time bomb of 60 days from the time of registration. Thus after 60 days, the software can no longer be used.

2. The Tryout Edition does not have access to floating options.

3. Plotted deliverables generated with Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Tryout Edition display a plot banner along the four page borders indicating that the object being printed was created with an educational version of Pro/ENGINEER. This banner will be present on Pro/ENGINEER plotted deliverables including drawings.

4. The Tryout Edition does not read or write trail files.

6. I would like to install the Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Tryout Edition in a language other than English. What do I do? If you would like to install the Tryout Edition in a language other than English follow these instructions:

Windows NT 4.0: 1. Right-click on My Computer and select Properties. Select the Environment tab

2. In the Variable field, type "LANG"

3. In the Value field, type "language", where language is: "German", "French", "Spanish", "Italian", or "Japanese"

4. Select Apply to effect the changes

Windows 2000/XP: 1. Right-click on My Computer and select Properties

2. In the Advanced tab, select the Environment Variables button

3. Under the "User" section, select New

4. In the Variable Name field, type "LANG"

5. In the Variable Value field, type "language", where language is: "German", "French", "Spanish", "Italian", or "Japanese"

In order for the language to be installed, it must be selected while defining the installation components. Setting the LANG environment variable enables both the installer (PTC.Setup) and Tryout Edition to display in the desired language. NOTE: For all Operating Systems, you will need to have a Japanese version of the OS in order to run in Japanese. For European languages, this is not required.

7. I am having problems launching the Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Tryout Edition. Are there any special installation procedures that I must follow? The Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Tryout Edition requires an NTFS File System. In many cases Windows XP Home Edition is setup with a FAT File System out of the box. The file system may need to be converted to NTFS if not already done.

1. Try setting the config.pro option "graphics win32_gdi"

8. I launch the Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Tryout Edition I see the splash screen, then it goes away but the program does not start. What do I do?

Windows NT: 1. Right-click on "My Computer" on your desktop

2. Select “Properties”. This will display a dialog box with four tabs on it

3. Select the Performance tab. This brings up the Application Performance dialog box, which is a slider with ranges from “None” to “Maximum”. The default setting in Windows is set at “full”. Move this slider all the way to “None”.

4. Select OK, which closes the window and exits the System Properties dialog box. Next, you will be prompted to restart your machine. Click yes to restart and the Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Tryout Edition should start.

5. If the Tryout Edition still doesn't run, right-click on your desktop and select “Properties” from the menu. This will display the “Display Settings” dialog box.

6. Select the “Settings” tab and locate the Color Palette or Color Depth setting. Set this value at 256 colors. Apply it and exit the Display Properties box. You should now be able to run the program.

Windows 2000/XP: 1. Right-click on the desktop and select “Properties”

2. On the Settings tab, click the Advanced button

3. There will be a Hardware Acceleration dialog box on the Troubleshooting tab. Move the slider from Full to "None", and apply the changes.

4. If the Tryout Edition still doesn't run, select the Settings tab and locate the Color setting. Set this value at 256 colors. Apply it and exit the Display Properties box. You should now be able to run the program.

9. What help tools are provided with the Tryout Edition? PTC Online Help is shipped with the Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Tryout Edition and is installed by default. The Online Help can be started from within Pro/ENGINEER by selecting #Help, #Pro/E Help System. Printed documentation is not provided. A Pro/ENGINEER multi-media primer CD is also provided.

10. I have just created my PTC online account. Do I need to upgrade my account before requesting the license file? NO. A basic username and password from www.ptc.com is sufficient for requesting a license file for the Tryout Edition.

11. What does the error "error in plpfhost" refer to? This error may occur for one of two reasons.

1. An Ethernet network adapter is not installed or configured properly. An Ethernet network adapter is required to start the Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Tryout Edition. Refer to your hardware vendor for information on installing and configuring the network adapter.

2. Media Sense, a new feature implemented within Windows ME and Windows 2000, may cause the PTC Host ID (Ethernet network adapter address) to not be detected due to the network card being disabled.

12. What does the error "could not detect network adapter" refer to? In order to start the Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Tryout Edition you will need an Ethernet network adaptor installed. Refer to your hardware vendor for information on installing and configuring the network adapter.

13. What are the minimum system requirements for the Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Tryout Edition? The Tryout Edition has the same system requirements as the commercial version of Pro/ENGINEER, with the exception of processor and operating system support. To view the complete hardware requirements visit: http://www.ptc.com/partners/hardware/current/proe.htm.

Please note that the Tryout Edition is not supported on UNIX or Linux platforms.

14. Is there a limit on the number of machines the Tryout Edition can be installed and started on? NO, there is no limit. However, a license file must be obtained for each machine that Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire will be installed.
