KERR, GORDON & CO.NEW YORK CITY.PRIVATE CIPHER CODE.

Considerations of privacy, economy and convenienceunite in suggesting the use of a telegraphic code of com-munication with customers.Clients, if they choose, may use Robinson's Code in-stead.INVESTMENTS SOLICITED.

We respectfully solicit the investment of capital in anyof the Stocks or Bonds listed on the New York Stock Ex-change, and the Now York Consolidated stock Exchangeand in Grain. Cotton, Oil, Provisions, or any other prod-uct for which there exists a quick market ;it the Ex-changes of New York and Chicago.Orders may be for cash or future delivery. Custom-ary stock orders solicited. Consignments of car lots re-ceive our most careful attention. We shall preface our Private Code with brief explana-tory paragraphs concerning the methods of modernfinance.

PUBLIC EXCHANGES.These are markets at which a large number of mer-chants meet daily, creating an immediate demand forcertain staple or negotiable property.

STOCKS.Corporations divide their property into shares calledstocks. A stock certificate is an official document indicat-ing and declaring the ownership of a certain number ofshares.

BONDS.Bonds are the SECURED promises of corporations, etc.,to pay borrowed money with Interest.

    4STOCK OPERATIONS.

It is possible for all persons to deal on these Exchangesthrough the regular members. The prices of stocks, asthey fluctuate, are reported by telegraph, and the in-vestor can always instruct his broker by the same rapidmeans.

A STOCK INVESTMENT.It is not necessary that the investor should furnish allthe capital needed to buy or sell stocks. Ik' may deal onwhat is called a MARGIN. To buy LOO Shares Of stock. ($100per share par value) the clienl should send his broker say

$500 and the broker will carry the balance of the invest-ment, charging only tin- legal Interest. On 100 shares ofstock bought at 'JO and sold at 91, the proQt is $100.BUYING STOCKS.

A, the client, at any point in the United States, no1 Icingthat Manhattan is 95, sends ."> per cenl margin or >">( ) to B,the broker, ordering a purchase of LOO shares al thai price.H buys the stock and it rises to ion. a then orders asale. A now has acredil n the broker's books of $1,000,less M of 1 percent commission and legal interest on thecapital advanced by the broker.

SELLING STOCK-But a client may wish to EM ii. STOCKS thai lie thinkswill decline in value. The operal Ion explained above is re-versed, and if the stocb declines > points, the client haslikewise made a profil of |600. This is called a short sale. The client can choose aw stock dbai/e in. and takeadvantage of the slightest variation in price, down to % of

    1 per cent.

STOP ORDERS.A STOP order is a limit of price given by the client atwhich to close his trade in case tin- market reaches that

limit, and is open till countermanded.

OUT OF TOWN CLIENTS.Modern financial methods ei./jie the client to operatewith precision and security at any distance from themarketA client may also open various accounts on the booksof the broker, advancing the proper margin to cover eachtransaction, and specifying separate action in each.

GRAIN.Chicago and New York are the leading grain markets ofthe world. The largest stores accumulate at Chicago, andNew York is the largest point of export. We are able to place orders to buy or sell grain for ourclients on either the Chicago Board of Trade or the NewYork Produce Exchange. (In latter case be sure to addthe word Abide to the cipher order.)

GRAIN ORDERS.Trading in lots of 5,000 bu. of grain bears a close likeness

to a trade in 50 shares of stock ; 1 cent advance is equal to$50 profit, the same as 1 per cent in stocks.

DEPOSITS,To enable the commission merchant to carry out anorder on the Board, the sum, say, of $100.00 or upward issent by express, bank draft or certified check; or money

may be deposited to the commission merchant's credit atthe client's own home bank. The client then orders thecommission merchant to buy or sell, say 5.000 bu. of wheat, say for May delivery. The merchant will instantly enterthe market and execute the order at the price that is rul-ing at that moment.MAKING AND CLOSING TRADES.

Supposing that in January the client orders his commis-sion merchant to buy 5.000 bushels of wheat for May deliv-ery at 55c. and deposits 2c per bushel ($100) as margins.Should wheat advance to 57c and the client order the dealclosed, the client will receive hack his margin and hisprofit of $100, less commission, and will be free of the deal.although the commission merchant may have to remain inthe deal until May. Then, in May. the wheat purchasedin January for May is delivered at tin- purchase price tothe merchant, and he in turn delivers it to the person whobought it from his client when the client left the deal.On the other hand, if t he client orders the merchant tosell 3.000 bu. of wheat for Mav delivery at 55c. depositingas before, and it advances to 56c, the client can order themerchant to buy it. and the merchant, after buying, willrender an account of the trade, remitting to the client thedifference remaining to his credit. If this order to buyhad not come to the merchant, he would have called formore margins, and not receiving same, would be forced toclose the deal with a greater lo>s, through exhaustion ofmargins. Thus t he client should at all times be vigilantin supplying the merchant with margins and in replyingspeedily to calls for same.

TRANSFERS FROM ONE MONTH TO ANOTHERconsist in selling wheat you may have bought for somefuture month before the arrival of BUCh mouth, and buy-ing the same amount for a inure distant future; or, metversa, buying wheat you have sold for some future monthbefore the arrival of such mont h.The client in this Operation buys or sells, the selleragreeing to deliver the commodity at the stated price insome future stated month, and the buyer agreeing to re-ceive it then. The time of the month when the delivery maybe madeis always optional with tin' seller.

COTTON.The method of dealing in cotton futures la by 100 balesof500 lbs. each, 100 bales weighing 50,000 lbs. This is theminimum order. Any future month of delivery may bechosen. In t he New York Cotton Exchange ami at other marketsof the United States the American cenl is divided Into 100parts or points; thus a fluctuation of SO points is equal to

% cent a pound. Bach point marks a difference of 95 on ahundred bales. Tf l

better than an order to buy or sell at an upset pi' ire whichthe market does not afford. When a market Is falling, it is- if lack of support, and the dealer who is soonestin will go with it further before the equilibrium is reached.Close attention to the course of the market, and promptaction are. therefore, essential to success. To buy or sell,ai rHE MARKET, is wisest, and there can then be' no mis-take or oversight, orders good for more than one dayShould add one of the cipher word-, which pertain to OPEKorders. Where price Is not stated, it is understood 1 hat 1 he

order shall be executed at the market.QUANTITIES, AND FUNDS NEEDED.
