Scholarships for College-Bound StudentsCoca-Cola Scholars

Since 1986, we have been able to support over 1,400 college students per year, with scholarships totaling up to $3.4 million!

1. Seniors in high schools throughout the United States who meet the eligibility requirements may apply each year for one of 250 four-year, achievement-based scholarships.

2. Approximately 2,200 applicants will be selected as Semifinalists and notified by mail and email around December 1. Semifinalists must then complete a secondary application, including essays, official transcripts, and two letters of recommendation. Semifinalist applications are due by mid-January. Our Program Review Committee will select 250 Finalists to advance to the final interview phase. Notifications are sent mid-February.

3. In April, the 250 Finalists are invited to Atlanta for personal interviews. The Finalists are interviewed by a National Selection Committee representing outstanding leaders in business, government, education and the arts. 50 students are then designated as National Scholars and receive awards of $20,000 for college; 200 students are designated as Regional Scholars and receive awards of $10,000 for college.

Corporate Scholarships

Numerous large corporations give back to the community by offering scholarships for undergraduate students. The bigger the corporation, the larger the chance of scholarship offers. Coca-Cola, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Toyota, you name it, they offer scholarships. The benefit of corporate scholarships is that eligibility criteria tend to be unrestrictive. Corporations want to reach as many people as possible, so their scholarships are open to various students. This obviously increases applicant competition, a negative side effect corporations try to offset by offering either lucrative awards or a large number awards. Worries about competition are warranted, but if you’re looking for straightforward requirements, corporate scholarships are a good bet.

Private Scholarships

Many individuals and small organizations also offer scholarships to help students pay for an education. It is not uncommon for private scholarship providers to attach detailed eligibility criteria to their awards, but, contrary to popular belief, they don’t always concentrate on GPA. In fact, private scholarships are frequently made available to students majoring in a particular

Page 2: Private Scholarships - Edl€¦  · Web viewShawn Carter Foundation. ... This exchange will enhance the student’s experience and provide a view of the world ahead. ... Ron Brown

subject or to those who have faced certain obstacles. For example, a pilot may begin an annual scholarship fund to assist aviation students in overcoming the financial obstacles he or she faced as a student. It is always a good idea to take advantage of scholarships with detailed eligibility criteria if you are among those eligible. Finding such awards may be time consuming without assistance, but using the free scholarship search at Scholarships.com will fix that.

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) believes that the country prospers when all Americans have access to the opportunities a college education can afford. As the nation’s leading Hispanic higher education fund, HSF works to address the barriers that keep many Latinos from earning a college degree.

In addition to scholarship opportunities for deserving Latino students, we offer a broad range of outreach and educational programming to help students and their families navigate through the rigors of college life. As the nation’s leading organization supporting Hispanic higher education, HSF developed the following initiatives that we believe are critical to strengthening America by helping Latinos earn a college degree.

FinAid was established in the fall of 1994 as a public service. This award-winning site has grown into the most comprehensive source of student financial aid information, advice and tools -- on or off the web. Access to FinAid is free for all users and there is no charge to link to the site.

FinAid has earned a stellar reputation in the educational community as the best web site of its kind. It's comprehensive, it's informative, it's objective -- and it's the first stop on the web for students looking for ways to finance their education.

Every major newspaper and personal finance magazine in the country has reviewed the site. The New York Daily News called FinAid "the hottest site on the Internet for financial aid tips." Yahoo Internet Life said to "make FinAid your first stop. This site offers some of the best 'how to' guidance on securing financial aid."

The site has won awards from the College Board, the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, the National Association of Graduate and Professional Students and the American Institute for Public Service.

11 billion dollars of scholarships can be found here. There is a nice listing of all California colleges that offer merit scholarships. Each year, thousands of students receive an average of $5,000 in merit scholarships from colleges. Many of these awards can be renewed year after year. Merit aid can sometimes reduce the cost of attending a college by tens of thousands of dollars a year.

Scholarships for the Average Student

Since 1999, we have helped millions of students, parents and counselors search 2.7 million local, state & national college scholarships & grants worth over 19 billion dollars!

However shocking, it’s utterly true: scholarship opportunities for average students from every walk of life are available. Scholarships are financial gifts; many given by sponsors who made it big after college and created funds for students who were among the untalented, uncoordinated, and unqualified in their class. Such sponsors know what it’s like to be underestimated and they want to give such 'average' students a chance at attending college.

The CIA Undergraduate Scholarship Program

Deadline: October 15, 2012

Page 12: Private Scholarships - Edl€¦  · Web viewShawn Carter Foundation. ... This exchange will enhance the student’s experience and provide a view of the world ahead. ... Ron Brown

The CIA undergraduate Scholarship Program believes in challenging Scholars with meaningful work that relates to their college major. This program is for students interested in making a commitment to working with the CIA.

The Undergraduate Scholar Program was developed, in part, to assist minority and disabled students, but application is open to all students who meet the requirements. The program offers unmatched experience. You'll complete work sessions during each summer break, increasing your knowledge and job responsibilities while assisting intelligence professionals and applying your academic skills.

We believe in challenging our Scholars with meaningful work that relates to their college major. An IT major, for example, might be given increasingly complex projects involving sophisticated computer systems. An engineering major might help produce a piece of state-of-the-art equipment. A finance major could be involved in developing and analyzing budgets for a worldwide operation. A foreign language major might be instrumental in translating documents for US policymakers. As a final example, a human resource major could have the opportunity to develop and implement personnel policies and procedures.

Once selected, you will be given an annual salary; a benefits package that includes health insurance, life insurance, and retirement; and up to $18,000 per calendar year for tuition, mandatory fees, books and supplies. You'll be required to work at an Agency facility during summer breaks and to maintain full-time college status during the school year with a minimum cumulative 3.0/4.0 GPA. We will pay the cost of transportation between school and the Washington, DC area each summer and provide a housing allowance.
