IntroductionThis guide has been developed to help you learn how to revise for your private hire/Hackney carriage Knowledge Test. The guide is only up to date as of the day it was written. You may find that some of the names of places have changed. Your test will be based on the information in the revision guide, but you may wish to make a note of any places that have changed when doing your revision.

Listen to the officers at the coaching session – they are there to help. The guide and coaching session will help you to understand how to use an A–Z correctly and what is included in the Knowledge Test.

Please take the time to read the revision guide and other information you are given note down any questions you have to take to the coaching session.

The coaching session is only the beginning; it tells you how to revise for the test. Take some time after the coaching session to properly revise for your Knowledge Test.

– Walk around the city to get to know the locations and streets. This will give you a better chance of passing.

– Don’t forget that passing your Knowledge Test is the first step on the road to becoming a professional taxi driver.

– You can become a better driver by continuing to learn the roads and streets and not relying on a sat nav.

– Learn about safeguarding.

Note: The lists of places are not exhaustive, so you are advised to learn as many of them as possible.

The Knowledge TestThe Knowledge Test consists of questions and a selection of answers. You will be required to place a tick (3) in the box you choose as your answer. The Knowledge Test consists of 3 sections, and you must pass all 3 both to be successful. * You must pass all parts of section 1, 2 and 3 pass the knowledge test. You will only be reuired to re-sit those sections that you failed.

At the end of the coaching session you will be asked to choose an area from Area 1 (North wards) Area 2 (Central wards) and Area 3 (South wards). The questions on your knowledge test paper will include some questions for routes that go to from and through your area and some from outside your area. You will be expected to have a good overall knowledge of all areas.

Section 2: Hackney Carriage OnlyThis has four parts. You must pass all four parts of this section.

Section 1 – Private Hire & Hackney CarriagePart 1: Using the Greater Manchester A–Z The A–Z is a very useful tool when used correctly:

– It helps with routes from one location to another, giving all road names on the route.

– It lists street names, towns and places in alphabetical order (districts are written in italics next to the street name).

– It lists landmarks such as larger public buildings, hospitals, churches and sports grounds by name.

Introduction The reference guide in the front of the A–Z explains all the symbols, for example is a Fire Station.

The index in the back of the A–Z shows:

– Areas in blue text: for example: Salford/Bolton etc.

– Places of interest in red text: for example: Abbotsfield Pk Miniature Railway.

– Streets, roads and avenues in black text for example: Abingdon Rd.

– Hospitals have their own section, after the index at the back of the book.

– Postcodes are situated in the centre of the A–Z.

– 50 Mile Map around Manchester is located in the centre of the A–Z.

– Mapping symbols can be found on the first two inside pages of the A–Z.

Note: There may be a small number of places that are not in the currrent A–Z.

Finding a location in the A–ZUsing your A–Z find Broadway in Urmston

Note down the page number and reference

If you have used the A–Z correctly, you will have found Broadway in Urmston and not Broadway in a different area.

The easiest way to find Broadway using your A–Z: Step 1: Go to the index in the back of the A–Z and look up the area Urmston.

Remember the area is in blue text

Finding ‘St’, ‘Sa’ and ‘Gt’ locations

Please find: St John’s Road (Heaton Mersey) (answer on page 47)

Many people look for this type of location by looking under St in the index or under J for John’s.

St in front of a word (St John’s Road) means Saint, so search for Sa

St after a word (John St) means Street, so search under St

Gt before a word (Gt Mary Road) means Great, so search under Gre

Part 1: Safeguarding, Legislation, Conditions and Customer Care You have been provided with a drivers handbook that provides you with information relating to ‘Safeguarding issues’. It also has a section that relates to advice regarding keeping yourself safe when working as a taxi driver.

The two main Acts that govern hackney carriage and private hire drivers are: Town and Police Clauses Act 1847 and 1889, and Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976. In relation to private hire drivers, there are conditions (yellow booklet) that must be adhered to. In relation to hackney carriage drivers there are byelaws, which must be adhered to.

There is other legislation that you need to be aware of:

– Vehicles – construction and use

– Highway Code

– Immigration law

– Revenue and benefit
