Priory Sea Level Rise Lesson Two

Did you find the website?

• On your tables discuss what you found, if you accessed the website, about the effect of sea level rise on infrastructure. Write down 2 examples.

This is what happened to the infrastructure of Lewes in 2000.

• All rail connections lost.• Roads under water and town cut in half.• 13 electricity sub stations stopped working.• The fire station was flooded.• Gas supplies failed.• Main Lewes sewage pumping station out of

action.

Infrastructure

So what can we do?

Quick exerciseWho do you think might GAIN from planning for the future? What jobs needs doing? What skills might we need? What inventions could help us? What education programmes might we need?

Remember this?

Sea level rise at Sheerness (Kent) since 1834

What’s the differencebetween the 1953 storm and predicted sea level rise?

We can plan!

We know about high tides – this was Newhaven on 17 Oct 2012

• 17 Oct 2012 7.17 m• 23 Aug 2013 7.07• 10 Sep 2014 7.24• 28 Sep 2015 7.32• 27 Oct 2016 7.28• 5 Nov 2017 7.14

These are the next high tides

But we can’t predict very heavy rainfall and tidal surges PLUS sea level rise effects.

That’s the reason for this programme and we thank you for trying the last two lessons.
