Galleries, 92 New Bond Street, London gallery label verso.* Peter Monamy was born in the Minories, London in 1681. Hisfather was a merchant from the Guernsey Monamy family, whowere originally of Jersey descent. For many years Monamy wasbelieved to have been born in Jersey, a myth initiated by theengraver George Vertue and repeated by Horace Walpole, probably as a consequence of Monamy's strong Jerseycontacts during his career, including Captain Thomas Durrelland his many depictions of Channel Islands marine scenes. Monamy originally trained as a house decorator, sign painterand gilder as an apprentice to William Clark, a former Master ofthe Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers from 1696-1703.Probably setting up in business as a decorator and easelpainter on his own account in 1704, he was a successful andprosperous studio painter by the early 1720s and by 1730 hisworks were being reproduced as engravings and mezzotints inlarge numbers. His chief influences were Isaac Sailmaker andWillem van de Velde the younger, whose drawings he copiedand collected. Monamy himself became a strong influence onCharles Brooking and his pupil Francis Swaine, who actuallynamed his son Monamy Swaine in his honour. He paintedactual ships but because his career took place during a periodof relative peace many of his works do not depict factualmaritime battles, instead showing ships at rest in calm seas, ashere. In 1736 he was commissioned along with other paintersto paint for the Vauxhall Gardens and in 1748 he presented apainting to the Foundling Hospital. Monamy's career eventuallyspanned over forty years and he has since become known asthe father of British nautical painting. Estimate: £15,000.00 - £20,000.00
