A recent Monday night’s cold temperature didn’t deter nearly 30
local gardeners from thawing out their collective green thumbs as
Gardening Portage kicked off its winter gardening workshops at the
Herman Prior Activity Centre.
Shea Doherty of Our Farm presented the first workshop in Gardening
Portage’s 2020 Winter Gardening Workshop series. Local gardening
expert Doherty led the 26 participants through the process of
building a succulent container garden.
Gardening Portage has three more workshops scheduled. Preparing
your garden is offered on Feb. 25; Get ready to grow a garden on
March 24 and Healthy growing and weed identification on April 20.
There is no cost for these workshops. You can preregister by
emailing the group at [email protected] or by phone at
204-857-6598.

IS YOUR MEMBERSHIP DUE? Chris or Kathy can check that out for you. Membership is now based on the date of sign up, no longer expires December 31st, but rather one year from the date the membership is purchased. Membership fees help us with the costs of operating the building and running programs.
Seniors invited for coffee on the farm The Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre (FFDC) (http://umanitoba.ca/afs/discoverycentre/) is celebrating Canada's Agriculture Day with a special event - Coffee on the Farm for Seniors. Do you know a group of seniors who would like to tour a Manitoba farm close to Winnipeg? Tour will include the FFDC and the new Dairy Farmers of Manitoba Discovery and Learning Complex and includes coffee and snacks. The Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre is the first hands-on facility which will explore the ways in which food is made in Canada. The centre is located at the National Centre for Livestock and the Environment, at the University of Manitoba’s Glenlea Research Station. Stop after the tour for lunch at Nick’s in Headingley. Cost: Bus cost approx. $25/person (prepay by Feb. 7 at the Herman Prior Activity Centre). Non-refundable unless we cancel. $6.50 entry fee at the centre. Lunch at Nick’s payable at restaurant.
Non-member drop-in fee raised We received a suggestion from a member that perhaps to increase membership we should make the drop in fee for non-members a bit higher than what it is. After discussing it at the board meeting, we agreed and as of March 1, 2020 the drop in fee for non-members has been raised to $3.00 a time.
February is "I Love to Read" Month! 2020's Theme: Books for a Better World “I Love to Read Month” is a month-long celebration that is
held each year to encourage reading, writing, and sharing in the
joy of literacy. This year’s theme is “Books for a Better
World." This theme encourages readers to start taking steps
towards creating a better world for everyone.

Volunteering is good for your mind and body (From healthguide.org.)
Volunteering provides many benefits to both mental and physical health.
Volunteering helps counteract the effects of stress, anger, and anxiety. The social contact aspect of helping and working with others can have a profound effect on your overall psychological well-being. Nothing relieves stress better than a meaningful connection to another person.
Volunteering combats depression. Volunteering keeps you in regular contact with others and helps you develop a solid support system, which in turn protects you against depression.
Volunteering makes you happy. By measuring hormones and brain activity, researchers have discovered that being helpful to others delivers immense pleasure. Human beings are hard-wired to give to others. The more we give, the happier we feel.
Volunteering increases self-confidence. You are doing good for others and the community, which provides a natural sense of accomplishment. Your role as a volunteer can also give you a sense of pride and identity. And the better you feel about yourself, the more likely you are to have a positive view of your life and future goals.
Volunteering provides a sense of purpose. Older adults, especially those who have retired or lost a spouse, can find new meaning and direction in their lives by helping others. Whatever your age or life situation, volunteering can help take your mind off your own worries, keep you mentally stimulated, and add more zest to your life.
Volunteering helps you stay physically healthy. Studies have found that those who volunteer have a lower mortality rate than those who do not. Older volunteers tend to walk more, find it easier to cope with everyday tasks, are less likely to develop high blood pressure, and have better thinking skills. Volunteering can also lessen symptoms of chronic pain and reduce the risk of heart disease.

Busy Board workshop planned for Tool Library
At our last tool library meeting we were planning workshops. We are working on having a workshop to make a busy board. They are great activities for young children and people with dementia. We will be looking for donations of pieces for the boards. Things like latches, locks with keys, hinges, etc. Stay tuned for details
Volunteer gardeners needed at centre The Herman Prior Activity Centre is looking for helpers to come in and start seeds in its rolling planters and to have people water and nurture them. In the spring, we will continue to grow these vegetables for use in our meal program, and maybe to sell at a plant sale. If you are interested in assisting, let us know.
