PrintIT! Annual Report

About PrintIT!1.0

PrintIT! is a nationwide education initiative that has been teaching students about the print and paper industries since 2005. To date more than 140,000 pupils and 2000 schools have taken part in the programme.

The aim of PrintIT! is to give students the opportunity to learn more about many different aspects of the print and paper industries and offer them an insight into the range of career opportunities that exist within these advanced manufacturing industries.

PrintIT! is aimed at Year 9 to Year 12 students (aged 13-16) studying for their GCSEs and A levels in Product Design and Graphic Products. The main focus of the programme is a competition, where students design promotional products using printing techniques that they have researched. Students are also asked to evaluate printing techniques, paper options and environmental and sustainability factors.

As part of the scheme, teachers are supplied with a guide to the programme, a series of prepared lesson plans, downloadable multi-media resources and interactive presentations. This helps to ensure consistent quality across the programme and helps teachers to link the programme to the national curriculum.

The programme culminates each year in an awards ceremony funded and attended by a wide range of industry luminaries. All of the student projects are judged by a board of industry based judges, and some fantastic prizes are awarded to winning schools and individual students.

1.1 2013/14 PrintIT! Aims

The main aims of PrintIT! are to inform and teach young people:

• About the Paper & Print industries• The basic skills needed for these sectors in both design and manufacturing• The careers available • The environmental concerns and raise awareness of the latest sustainable practices • The latest technologies and future of the sector

1.2 The Print Industry

PrintIT! showcases the print, paper & packaging industries in a positive light to young people. In the midst of a digitally driven world, the printing industries have face hardships in recent times. In a period of consolidation, over the last five years employee numbers have fallen around 20% and the number of companies by 15%.

But despite this, the sector is still the second largest manufacturing contributor to the UK economy, only behind pharmaceuticals. There are 9,653 companies in the UK employing 129,195 people, with a turnover of over 14 Billion Pounds . Print and Packaging remains a vital component to the UK economy, and PrintIT! aims to ensure young people are aware of the opportunities available in this sector.

PrintIT! 2013 /142.0

The PrintIT! programme for 2013/14 launched in September 2013.

A marketing campaign tailored around the launch of the programme consisted in press releases, adverts, social media campaign, online articles and information about the PrintIT! programme. Details for registration were sent to all schools on the Proskills database which consisted of 5,102 schools from around the country.

PrintIT! e-shots were sent to 1064 teachers and phone calls were made to 1602 schools. In addition, Proskills acquired further data on secondary schools in England and information on the 2013/14 PrintIT! programme was sent to a further 3500 schools

This promotional activity resulted in 3080 student registrations from seventy two schools. In total, 362 design entries from 36 schools were received by the competition closing date.

These entries were judged on the 24th May 2014 at the offices of the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) by eleven employers and industry representatives.

The judging panel consisted of:

• Counter top units• Poster• Free standing display unit (Standees)• Packaging• Dump bin• Floor graphics• Signage (all sorts – indoor, outdoor)• Shelf wobblers/talkers and shelf strips• Reusable shopping bag

The students were taken through three assignments, designed to ensure their understanding of the whole design to production process:

1. Assignment One - Product Investigation Investigate the use of graphics in promotional materials used to market a product.

3. Assignment Three - Product Manufacture Manufacture one or more promotional products to the support the Fairtrade Campaign.

2.1 The Project Overview

2.2 National Careers Service Project

As part of this years brief an additional pilot project was offered to the schools midway through the school year. Working withthe National Careers Service (NCS), the students were asked to engage with the NCS website and make recommendations for how it should be promoted and marketed to young people. The students were also asked to design printed promotional material aimed at encouraging young people to visit the NCS website and to make use of some or all of its services.

Students were asked to consider the marketing and promotion of the National Careers Service and to design a printable item in one of the following formats:

• A poster• A series of postcards• A flyer• A free design of their choice

Feedback & Survey Results3.0

To assess whether the programme had a positive effect on the students and teachers, surveys were issued to measure its impact. These were administered via the student workbook and an online surveying tool.

The students were asked specific questions before and after they completed the course to whether their understanding of the industries were improved. The teachers were asked more general questions on the programme and their perceptions of how their students benefited at the end of the programme.

Teachers were asked to complete a survey on how they viewed the programme. Overall feedback showed that the teachers enjoyed the programme thoroughly and reported their students gained a positive perception of the Print and Paper industries.

Feedback showed that:

• All teachers thought that PrintIT! gave students a better insight into career possibilities in the Print and Paper industries

• 94% of teachers would definitely register again next year• 84% of teachers thought that their students enjoyed the PrintIT! programme• 55% of teachers said that their students expressed an interest in working in the Print

and Paper industries after doing PrintIT!

Student Comments

I really enjoyed learning about the many uses of paper and about the different types of printing. I never knew there were so many different ways to print on paper.

I thoroughly enjoyed gaining knowledge and insight into the print and paper industry, especially when I was researching how I could produce my printed product.

My favorite part of PrintIT! was learning about how paper is made and how it is printed in industry.

“““

Overall results of the student survey indicate a successful growth in their understanding of the print and paper industry. Before the programme there were clear indications that the students did not have much knowledge about the industry with only 2.87% saying they knew “Quite a lot”. This saw a sharp rise to 57.83% after completion of the programme.

There were also healthy rises in their considerations of careers in the industry with nearly 17% saying they would “consider a career in the industry”, compared to 10.9% before the programme.

Finally, there were positive signs that the students’ understanding of the industry’s modernization improved with nearly a 10%rise in “the industry welcomes design and innovation”.

See section 6 for details of the programme’s future plans to ensure students are more aware of the industry’s latest technologies and skills.

2014/15 PrintIT! Aims 6.0

For 2015 Proskills will be making several changes to its suite of Schools Into Industry Programmes (SIIPS), of which PrintIT! is just one, in order to enhance the learner participation and experience.

NEW Charitable status

Proskills UK has already evolved its organisation into a Registered Charity (no 1155635) with the primary aim to promote, advance, and provide training and education for persons working in or intending to work in the material, production and supply industries. The Schools Into Industry programmes fall within the aims and scope of the Proskills Registered Charity.

This now means that donations are eligable to be tax deductable which has to be good news. It also means we can make limited funds go that bit further in support of the charitable aims.

NEW Trustees

To underpin both PrintIT! and Proskills, new trustees will be sought from the Print and Paper industries. These trustees will support PrintIT! with expertise and guidance ensuring the long-term sustainability and success of PrintIT!

NEW Registered trademark

To ensure that the brand is fully protected, all of Proskills Schools Into Industry programmes are now registered trademarks and will carry the registered trademark symbol ‘®’.

The NEW ultimate aims of the SIIPS are to:

3 Provide students with an exciting insight and hands-on experience into industries

3 Provide students with an opportunity to understand and experience potential career paths, employment and training opportunities

3 Enable students to access further education, apprenticeships and employment in the industries through a supported approach

3 Provide schools and teachers with current industry developed and curriculum mapped education materials

3 To challenge environmental issues and raise awareness of the very latest developments in sustainable practices

3 Give industries a vehicle to share the latest industry developments and innovations

3 To create and deliver a self-financing programme that is free of charge to schools and students like.
