Welcome to the PepsiCo Print Quality Program
Every time a consumer sees a package with a PepsiCo trademark on it, an impression is made. The purpose of the Print Quality Program is to ensure that brand equity at shelf is protected and maintained. PepsiCo recently converted our graphics to a simple, unified look on brand Pepsi. This design, although simple, is very revealing of brand misrepresentation due to printing defects and damage during production and distribution. This new design is also very sensitive to production fluctuations and has led us to improve our global print quality. PepsiCo has designed the following program that will help maintain brand equity at shelf, and strengthen our business. We invite you to join us on this journey knowing that only together will we reach our goals.
“If you cannot measure it, you cannot improve it”
- Lord Kelvin
Introduction to Color
• Color Perception is based on 3 variables:
• Observer – who/what is looking
• Object – the actual item being looked at
• Illuminant – the type of light on the object
• Mathematically, a color is described as a point within the three dimensional color space. We call this location our Spectral Target and use the CIE L*a*b* method to determine the location.
• L* = measure of Luminance: how light or dark
• a* = measure across the red to green hue
• b* = measure across the yellow to blue hue
• h* = Hue or color as relates to angle from red
• C* = Chroma or distance from gray center or saturation of color
• The tolerance we use, Delta Ecmc, is the summation of the mathematical distances between target and sample colors in the L*a*b color space, with regard to hue angle.

Color Match, Registration and Print Defects, are the 3 attributes by which print quality is
assessed on all packaging within the program
Attribute Description Metric Current Status
Color Match
• Visual perception property
• Delta Ecmc tolerance in reference to a spectral target using X-Rite Spectrometer
• Analytical tools in place for labels, cartons and cans
Registration • Alignment of colors in
the printed graphic • Measured in 1000th of an inch for
both vertical and horizontal • Measured for all
substrates, validating process capability versus graphic design capability
Print Defects • Common list of defects
defined such as spots or scratches
• Visually checked versus standard list and scored using a standard matrix
• All substrates measured versus a common list
All attributes are graded against substrate specific tolerances
Measurement Equipment
All humans see color differently. Lighting changes according to the situation. To create an objective measurement of the object, we must eliminate the
variables of an observer and the illuminant by using a spectrophotometer.
PepsiCo has entered into a relationship with X-Rite, a global leader in color management technology, to provide the cost effective tools and training
necessary to conduct precise and accurate measurements in production.

• The PepsiCo Print Quality Program has been tested in North America over the last two years and has cut the percentage of Out of Spec items by 50%.
• The mission is to “liD and shiD” the globally scalable learning from the NA program to all internaFonal sectors based on the following plaGorms:
1. Standards SeJng and DistribuFon
2. ObjecFve Measurement Against Approved Spectral Targets
3. ReporFng of Data
Standard Setting and Distribution
• Standards are set for global brands during production runs and are approved by PepsiCo representatives on-site
• These standards are sent to third-party quality firms where spectral targets and measurement point documents are created and all samples are measured to ensure they are within tolerance of the target
• Standards are stickered and distributed to suppliers as a two-piece kit – Spectral Targets and Measurement Point Documents are supplied through the
PepsiCo Graphics Quality User Group Website – Visual Targets are provided for visual color reference
• Standards will be provided through regional graphics studios

Once targets are set, precise X-Rite measurement systems are used to gather data, make adjustments, achieve and maintain consistency.
Report the data to track trends and identify opportunities. This creates continuous global improvement.
Reporting of Data
• X-Rite Colormaster 2 software is the standard requirement for the PepsiCo Graphics Quality System.
• All spectral targets are created within the software
• Provides a great platform with which to conduct measurements
PepsiCo Graphics Quality User Group
• Website created as a central repository for information of the world-wide base of PepsiCo suppliers to access all data, targets, tolerances, and standard operating procedures for producing in-spec PepsiCo graphics
• Suppliers will receive login information after they have received their measurement equipment
• Features a dedicated Technical Support Team and Training from X-rite
• Provides the ability to purchase equipment at PepsiCo rates
1. Work with your local graphics studio to ensure the correct Standard Kits have been provided
2. Follow the directions within the kit to access the PepsiCo User Group Site
3. Utilize the information on the User Group to purchase your spectral device at the PepsiCo reduced rate
1. Also download the standard operating procedures and spectral targets for the Quality Program
4. Undergo training from X-Rite to ensure correct use of equipment
