INTRODUCTION

Everyone is a beginner the first timehe sits behind the controls of a snow-mobile regardless of previous expe-rience in driving an automobile, amotorcycle or a motorboat. The safeuse of your snowmobile is dependenton many conditions such as visibility, speed, weather, environment, traffic, vehicle condition and the condition ofthe driver. Each operator has a responsibility toensure the safety of his/her passen-ger, if any, and of other recreationistsor bystanders. You are responsible for proper opera-tion of your vehicle as well as trainingthose whom you allow to ride or drive. There may be noticeable handling andperformance differences from onesnowmobile to the other.A snowmobile is relatively simple tooperate but like any other vehicleor mechanical equipment, it can behazardous if you or a passenger arereckless, thoughtless or inattentive. We encourage you to have an AnnualSafety Inspection of your snowmo-bile. Please contact an authorizedSKI-DOO dealer for further details. Finally, we urge you to visit an autho-rized SKI-DOO dealer periodically forregular and safety maintenance, aswell as snowmobile accessories youmay require.

IMPORTANT BASIC SAFETY MEASURES

Training Basic training is required for the

safe operation of any snowmobile.Study your Operator's Guide payingparticular attention to cautions andwarnings. Join your local snow-mobile club: its social activitiesand trail systems are planned forboth fun and safety. Obtain basicinstructions from your snowmobiledealer, friend, fellow club memberor enroll in your state or provincialsafety training program.

Always show a new operator howto start and stop the vehicle. In-dicate the correct riding positionsand, above all else, only allow himto operate the snowmobile in a re-stricted flat area — at least until heis completely familiar with its opera-tion. If there is a local snowmobileoperator's training course existing, have him enroll.

Performance The performance of some snow-

mobiles may significantly exceedthat of other snowmobiles you haveoperated. Therefore, use by noviceor inexperienced operators is notrecommended.

Snowmobiles are used in many ar-eas and in many snow conditions. Not all models perform the same insimilar conditions. Always consultyour snowmobile dealer when se-lecting the snowmobile model foryour particular needs and uses.

Injury or death may result to thesnowmobile operator, passengeror bystander if the snowmobile isused in risky conditions which arebeyond the driver's, passenger'sor snowmobile's capabilities or in-tended use.

Age BRP recommends the operator has

at least 16 years old of age.

Speed Speeding can be fatal. In many

cases, you cannot react or respondquickly enough to the unexpected.Always ride at a speed which issuitable to the trail, weather condi-tions and your own ability. Knowyour local rules. Speed limit maybe in effect and meant to be ob-served.

Riding Always keep right hand side of the

trail. Always keep a safe distance

from other snowmobiles and by-standers.

Remember, promotional materialmay show risky maneuvers per-formed by professional riders underideal and/or controlled conditions. You should never attempt any suchrisky maneuvers if they are beyondyour level of riding ability.

Never ride after consuming drugs oralcohol or if you feel tired or ill. Op-erate your snowmobile prudently.

Your snowmobile is not designed tobe operated on public streets, roadsor highways.

Snowmobiling at night can be a de-lightful experience but because ofreduced visibility, be extra cautious.Avoid unfamiliar terrain and be sureyour lights are working. Always car-ry a flashlight and spare light bulbs.

Page 12: Print Preview - Bombardier Recreational Products · new SKI-DOO® snowmobile. What-ever model you have chosen, it is backed by the Bombardier Recre-ational Products Inc. (BRP) warranty

Nature is wonderful but don't let itdistract your attention from driving. If you want to truly appreciate win-ter's scenery, stop your snowmo-bile on the side of the trail so thatyou don't become a hazard to oth-ers.

Fences represent a very seriousthreat for both you and your snow-mobile. Give a wide berth to tele-phone poles or posts.

Hidden wires unseen from a dis-tance can cause serious accidents.

Always wear an approved safetyhelmet, eye protection and a faceshield. This also applies to yourpassenger.

Be aware of inherent risks associ-ated with riding off trails, such asavalanche and other natural or manmade hazards or obstacles.

Avoid road traveling. If you mustdo so, and it is permitted, reducespeed. The snowmobile is not de-signed to operate or turn on paving. When crossing a road, make a fullstop, then look carefully in both di-rections before crossing at a 90° an-gle. Be wary of parked vehicles.

Tailgating another snowmobileshould be avoided. If the snow-mobile in front of you slows for anyreason, its driver and passengercould be harmed through your ne-glect. Maintain a safe stoppingdistance between you and thesnowmobile in front of you. De-pending on the terrain condition, stopping may require a little morespace than you think. Play it safe.Be prepared to use evasive driving.

Venturing out alone with your snow-mobile could also be hazardous. You could run out of fuel, have anaccident, or damage your snowmo-bile. Remember, your snowmobileis capable of traveling further in halfan hour than you may be able towalk in a day. Use the “buddy sys-tem”. Always ride with a friend ormember of your snowmobile club.Even then, tell someone where youare going and the approximate timeyou plan to return.

Meadows sometimes have low ar-eas where water accumulate andfreezes over in winter. This ice isusually glare ice. Attempting toturn or brake on this surface couldcause your vehicle to spin out ofcontrol. Never brake or attemptspeeding or turning on glare ice. Ifyou do happen to travel over sucha condition, reduce speed by care-fully releasing the throttle.

Never “jump” with your snowmo-bile. This should be left to profes-sional stunt men. Don't show off.Be responsible.

While on safari, do not “gun” thethrottle. Snow and ice can bethrown back into the path of afollowing snowmobile. In addition, when “gunning” the throttle, thevehicle digs into and leaves an ir-regular snow surface for others.

Safaris are both fun and enjoyablebut don't show off or overtakeothers in the group. A less experi-enced operator might try to do thesame as you and fail. When ridingwith others, limit your abilities tothe experience of others.

Operation Always make a pre-start inspection

BEFORE you turn on the ignition. In an emergency, the snowmobile

engine can be stopped by press-ing down on the engine cut-outswitch, pulling the tether cord cap(DESSTM key) or turning off the ig-nition switch key.

Throttle mechanism should bechecked for free movement andreturn to idle position before start-ing engine.

Always engage parking brake whenvehicle is not in use.

Never run the engine in a non-ventilated area and/or if vehicle isleft unattended.

Never operate the engine withoutbelt guard securely installed or,with hood or access/side panelsopened or removed. Never run theengine without drive belt installed.Running an unloaded engine suchas without drive belt or with trackraised, can be dangerous.

Electric start models only: Nevercharge or boost a battery while in-stalled on snowmobile.

Ensure the path behind is clear ofobstacles or bystanders before pro-ceeding in reverse.

Always remove the ignition key (ifapplicable) or the tether cord cap(DESS key) when vehicle is not inoperation in order to prevent ac-cidental engine starting, to avoidunauthorized use by children or oth-ers or theft.

Raising the rear of your snowmobilewhile the engine is running couldcause snow, ice or debris to bethrown back at an observer. Nev-er raise the rear of the vehicle whilethe engine is running. To clear or in-spect the track, stop the engine, tiltthe vehicle on its side and removeblockage with a piece of wood orbranch. Never allow anyone near arotating snowmobile track.

Maintenance Know your snowmobile and treat

it with the respect and care due ofany power driven machine. Com-mon sense, proper handling androutine maintenance will result insafer and enjoyable use.

Only perform procedures as de-tailed in this guide. Unless other-wise specified, engine should beturned OFF and cold for all lubrica-tion, adjustment and maintenanceprocedures.

Never have the engine runningwhile the hood or access/sidepanels are opened. Even at idle,a snowmobile engine is turningaround 1800 RPM. Always turn offthe engine before opening the hoodand/or side panels for any reason.

Never remove any original equip-ment from your snowmobile. Eachvehicle has many built in safety fea-tures. Such features include vari-ous guards and consoles, plus re-flective materials and warning la-bels.

____________ SAFETY INFORMATION ___________ 11

Page 14: Print Preview - Bombardier Recreational Products · new SKI-DOO® snowmobile. What-ever model you have chosen, it is backed by the Bombardier Recre-ational Products Inc. (BRP) warranty

A poorly maintained snowmobileitself can be a potential hazard. Ex-cessively worn components couldrender the vehicle completely in-operative. Keep the snowmobilein good working condition at alltimes. Follow your pre-operationcheck, weekly, monthly and an-nually routine maintenance andlubrication procedures as detailedin this guide. Consult a snowmo-bile dealer or acquire a shop manualand proper tools and equipment ifother repairs or service is required.

Do not stud the track unless it hasbeen approved for studs. At speed,a studded track that has not beenapproved for studs could tear andseparate from vehicle posing a riskof severe injury or death.

Fuel Always stop the engine before

refueling. Fuel is flammable andexplosive under certain conditions.Always work in a well-ventilatedarea. Do not smoke or allow openflames or sparks in the vicinity.Open cap slowly. If a differen-tial pressure condition is noticed(whistling sound heard when loos-ening fuel tank cap) have vehicleinspected and/or repaired beforefurther operation. Do not overfillor top off the fuel tank before plac-ing the vehicle in a warm area.As temperature increases, fuel ex-pands and might overflow. Alwayswipe off any fuel spillage from thevehicle. Periodically verify fuel sys-tem.

Basics for Passenger Never ride as a passenger unless

the snowmobile is equipped with apassenger seat, and sit only on thedesignated passenger seat.

Always wear a DOT approved hel-met and follow the same dressingguidelines as those recommendedfor the operator and described inthis guide.

Make sure that you are able toachieve a stable stance, both feetresting positively on the footboardsof footrests with good grip, andthat you are able to hold on firmlyto the handholds.

Once underway, if you feel uncom-fortable or insecure for any reason, don‘t wait, tell the driver to slowdown or stop.

RIDING THE VEHICLE

Before venturing on the trails, operatethe snowmobile in a restricted flat areauntil you are completely familiar withits operation and feel comfortable thatyou can safely tackle a more demand-ing task. Have an enjoyable and saferide.

Principle of Operation

PropulsionDepressing throttle lever increasesengine RPM causing the drive pulleyto engage. Depending on models en-gine RPM must be between 2500 and4200 before drive pulley engagementwill occur.Outer sheave of drive pulley movestoward inner sheave, forcing the drivebelt to move upward on the drivepulley and simultaneously forcing thesheaves apart on the driven pulley. The driven pulley senses the load onthe track and limits the belt move-ment. The result is an optimizedspeed ratio between engine RPM andthe speed of the vehicle at any time.

WARNINGNever operate engine without beltguard securely installed or, withhood or access/side panels openedor removed.

Power is transferred to the trackthrough the chaincase or gearboxand drive axle.

WARNINGAlways use a wide-base snowmo-bile mechanical stand to properlysupport vehicle during any trackverification. Slowly accelerateengine in order to rotate track atvery low speed when it is not onground.

TurningHandlebar controls the steering of thevehicle. As the handlebar is rotated toright or left, the skis are turned right orleft to steer the snowmobile.

StoppingBefore riding your snowmobile, youshould understand how to stop it.This is done by releasing the throttleand gradually depressing the brakelever on the left side of the handlebar. In an emergency, you may stop yourvehicle by pressing the engine cut-outswitch located near the throttle controland applying the brake. Remember, asnowmobile cannot “stop on a dime”.Braking characteristics vary with deepsnow, packed snow or ice. If the trackis locked during hard braking, skiddingmay result.

How to Ride

How to DressProper snowmobile clothing shouldbe worn. It should be comfortableand not too tight. Always check theweather forecast before going on aride. Dress for the coldest weatherexpected. Thermal underwear nextto the skin also provides a good insu-lation.DOT approved helmets are recom-mended at all times. They provideboth warmth and reduce injury. Astocking type cap, balaclava and facemask should always be carried orworn. Goggles or a face shield thatattach to the helmet are indispens-able.Hands should be protected by a pairof snowmobile gloves or mitts whichhave sufficient insulation and allowuse of thumbs and fingers for opera-tion of controls.

Rubber bottom boots with either a ny-lon or a leather top, with removablefelt liners are best suited for snowmo-biling.You should keep yourself as dry aspossible when snowmobiling. Whenyou come indoors, take your snowmo-bile suit and boots off and make cer-tain they dry properly.Do not wear long scarfs and loose ap-parels that could get caught in movingparts.

What to BringEvery snowmobiler should carry atleast the following basic parts andtools that can help him and others inan emergency:– This Operator's Guide– Spare spark plugs and wrench– Friction tape– Spare drive belt– Spare starter rope– Spare light bulbs– Tool kit (including at least pliers,

screwdriver, adjustable wrench)– Knife– Flashlight.Include other items depending on thelength and time of your ride.

Riding PositionYour riding position and balance arethe two basic principles of makingyour snowmobile go where you wantit to. When turning on the side of ahill, you and your passenger must beready to shift body weight to help itturn in the desired direction. Driverand passenger(s) must never attemptthis maneuvering by placing feet out-side of the vehicle. Experience willteach you how much lean to put in-to turns at different speeds and howmuch you will have to lean into a slopeto maintain proper balance.

Generally, the riding position for bestbalance and control is sitting. Howev-er, the posting, kneeling or standingpositions are also used under certainconditions. The novice driver should become fa-miliar with the snowmobile throughpractice on a level area at slow speedsbefore venturing afield.

WARNINGDo not attempt any maneuvers ifthey are beyond your abilities.

SittingFeet on the running boards, body mid-way back on seat is an ideal positionwhen operating the snowmobile overfamiliar, smooth terrain. Knees andhips should remain flexible to absorbshocks.

mmo2006-003-001

PostingA semi-sitting position with the bodyoff the seat and the feet under thebody in a sort of squatting posture, thus allowing the legs to absorb theshocks when traveling over uneventerrain. Avoid abrupt stops.

mmo2006-003-002

KneelingThis position is achieved by placingone foot firmly on the running boardand the opposite knee on the seat.Avoid abrupt stops.

mmo2006-003-003

StandingPlace both feet on the running boards.Knees should be flexed to absorb theshock from surface bumps. This isan effective position to see better andto shift weight as conditions dictate.Avoid abrupt stop.

mmo2006-003-004

Carrying a PassengerCertain snowmobiles are designed foran operator only, others can allow onepassenger only, and others can allowup to two passengers. Refer to theindications on the vehicles to know ifany particular snowmobile can accom-modate passengers or not, and if so,how many. Always respect those indi-cations. Overloading is dangerous be-cause snowmobiles are not designedfor it.Even when passengers are allowed, you must make sure that the personswho would like to become passengersare physically fit for snowmobiling.

WARNINGAny passenger must be able tofirmly lay his feet on the footrestsand keep his hands on the grabhandles or seat strap at all timeswhen seated. Respecting thosephysical criteria is important toensure that the passenger is stableand to reduce the risks of ejection.

On snowmobiles allowing two pas-sengers, if you have an adult and achild for passenger, BRP recommendsthat the child sits in the center loca-tion. This allows an adult sitting in therear seat to keep a visual contact withthe child and hold him if necessary. In addition, the child is best protectedagainst the wind and cold temperatureif seated in the center location. Each operator has a responsibility toensure the safety of his passengersand should inform them of snowmo-biling basics.

16 ___________ SAFETY INFORMATION ___________

Page 19: Print Preview - Bombardier Recreational Products · new SKI-DOO® snowmobile. What-ever model you have chosen, it is backed by the Bombardier Recre-ational Products Inc. (BRP) warranty

 WARNING

– Passengers must only sit ondesignated passenger seats.Never allow anyone to sit be-tween the handlebar and theoperator.

– Each passenger seat must havea strap or grab handles andmeet SSCC standards.

– Passengers and operators mustalways wear DOT approved hel-mets and warm clothing appro-priate for snowmobiling. Makesure that no skin is exposed.

– Once underway, if a passengerfeels uncomfortable or unse-cure for any reason, he mustnot wait, and tell the driver toslow-down or stop.

Riding with passengers on board isdifferent than riding alone. The oper-ator has the benefit of knowing whatwill be the next maneuver and is ableto prepare himself accordingly. Theoperator also benefits from the sup-port of his grip on the handlebar. Incontrast, the passengers have to re-ly on the operator’s careful and safeoperation of the vehicle. In addition,“body english” is limited with passen-gers, and the operator can sometimessee more of the trail ahead than thepassengers. Therefore, smooth start-ing and stopping are required withpassengers, and the operator mustslow down. The operator must alsowarn passengers of side hills, bumps, branches, etc. An unforeseen bumpcan leave you passenger-less. Re-mind your passengers to lean intothe turn with you, without causingthe vehicle to topple. Be extremelycareful, go more slowly and check thepassengers frequently.

WARNINGWhen riding with a passenger:– Braking ability and steering

control are reduced. Decreasespeed and allow extra space tomaneuver.

– Adjust suspension according toweight.

For complete information on howto adjust the suspension, please re-fer to the section of this Operator’sGuide entitled SUSPENSION ADJUST-MENTS.Use extra caution and go even moreslowly with young passengers. Checkfrequently to make certain the childhas a firm grip and is properly posi-tioned with his feet on the runningboards.

Terrain/Riding Variations

Groomed TrailOn a maintained trail, sitting is themost preferred riding position. Do notrace and, above all, keep to the righthand side of the trail. Be preparedfor the unexpected. Observe all trailsigns. Do not zigzag from one side ofthe trail to the other.

Ungroomed TrailUnless there has been a fresh snow-fall you can expect “washboard” andsnowdrift conditions. Taken at exces-sive speeds, such conditions can bephysically harmful. Slow down. Holdon the handlebar and assume a post-ing position. Feet should be under thebody assuming a crouched position toabsorb any jarring effect. On longerstretches of “washboard” trails, thekneeling position of one knee on theseat can be adopted. This providesa certain amount of comfort, while atthe same time keeps the body looseand capable of vehicle control. Be-ware of hidden rocks or tree stumpspartially hidden by a recent snowfall.

____________ SAFETY INFORMATION ___________ 17

Page 20: Print Preview - Bombardier Recreational Products · new SKI-DOO® snowmobile. What-ever model you have chosen, it is backed by the Bombardier Recre-ational Products Inc. (BRP) warranty

Deep SnowIn deep “powder” snow, your vehiclecould begin to “bog” down. If this oc-curs, turn in as wide an arc as possi-ble and look for a firmer base. If youdo get “bogged”, and it happens toeveryone, do not spin your track asthis makes the vehicle sink deeper. In-stead, turn the engine off, get off andmove the back of the vehicle onto newsnow. Then tramp a clear path aheadof the vehicle. A few feet will gener-ally suffice. Restart the engine. As-sume the standing position and rockthe vehicle gently as you steadily andslowly apply the throttle. Dependingon whether the front or rear end ofthe vehicle is sinking, your feet shouldbe placed on the opposing end of therunning boards. Never place foreignmaterial beneath the track for support.Do not allow anyone to stand in frontof, or to the rear of, the snowmobilewith the engine running. Stay awayfrom the track. Personal injury will re-sult if contact is made with the revolv-ing track.

Frozen WaterTraveling frozen lakes and rivers canbe fatal. Avoid waterways. If youare in an unfamiliar area, ask the lo-cal authorities or residents about theice condition, inlets, outlets, springs, fast moving currents or other haz-ards. Never attempt to operate yoursnowmobile on ice that may be tooweak to support you and the vehicle.Operating a snowmobile on ice or icysurfaces can be very dangerous if youdo not observe certain precautions. The very nature of ice is foreign togood control of a snowmobile or anyvehicle. Traction for starting, turningor stopping is much less than thaton snow. Thus, these distances canbe multiplied manyfold. Steering isminimal, and uncontrolled spins arean ever present danger. When oper-ating on ice, drive slowly with caution.Allow yourself plenty of room forstopping and turning. This is especial-ly true at night.

Hard Packed SnowDon't underestimate hard packedsnow. It can be difficult to negotiateas both skis and track do not have asmuch traction. Best advice is to slowdown and avoid rapid acceleration, turning or braking.

UphillThere are two types of hills you can en-counter — the open hill on which thereare few trees, cliffs or other obstacles, and a hill that can only be climbed di-rectly. On an open hill, the approachis to climb it by side hilling or slalom-ing. Approach at an angle. Adopt akneeling position. Keep your weighton the uphill side at all times. Main-tain a steady, safe speed. Continueas far as you can in this direction, thenswitch to an opposite hill angle and rid-ing position.

18 ___________ SAFETY INFORMATION ___________

Page 21: Print Preview - Bombardier Recreational Products · new SKI-DOO® snowmobile. What-ever model you have chosen, it is backed by the Bombardier Recre-ational Products Inc. (BRP) warranty

A direct climb could present problems.Choose the standing position, accel-erate before you start the climb andthen reduce throttle pressure to pre-vent track slippage. In either case, vehicle speed shouldbe as fast as the incline demands.Always slow down as you reach thecrest. If you cannot proceed further, don't spin your track. Turn the en-gine off, free the skis by pulling themout and downhill, place the rear of thesnowmobile uphill restart the engineand ease it out with slow even throttlepressure. Position yourself to avoidtipping over, then descend.

DownhillDownhill driving requires that youhave full control of your vehicle at alltimes. On steeper hills, keep yourcenter of gravity low and both handson the handlebar. Maintain slightthrottle pressure and allow the ma-chine to run downhill with the engineoperating. If a higher than safe speedis reached, slow down by braking butapply the brake with frequent lightpressure. Never jam the brake andlock the track.

Side HillWhen crossing a side hill or travers-ing up or downhill, certain proceduresmust be followed. All riders shouldlean towards the slope as requiredfor stability. The preferred operatingpositions are the kneeling position, with the knee of the down hill legon the seat and the foot of the up-hill leg on the running board, or theposting position. Be prepared to shiftyour weight quickly as needed. Sidehills and steep slopes are not recom-mended for a beginner or a novicesnowmobiler.

SlushSlush should be avoided at all times.Always check for slush before start-ing across any lake or river. If darkspots appear in your tracks, get off theice immediately. Ice and water can bethrown rearward into the path of a fol-lowing snowmobile. Getting a vehicleout of a slush area is strenuous and insome cases, impossible.

Fog or WhiteoutsOn land or water, fog or visibility-limiting snow can form. If you haveto proceed into the fog or heavy snow,do so slowly with your lights on andwatch intently for hazards. If you arenot sure of your way, do not proceed.Keep a safe distance behind othersnowmobilers to improve visibilityand reaction time.

Unfamiliar TerritoryWhenever you enter an area that isnew to you, drive with extreme cau-tion. Go slow enough to recognizepotential hazards such as fences orfence posts, brooks crossing yourpath, rocks, sudden dips, guy wiresand countless other obstacles whichcould result in a termination of yoursnowmobile ride. Even when fol-lowing existing tracks, be cautious.Travel at a speed so you can see whatis around the next bend or over thetop of the hill.

Bright SunshineBright sunny days can considerably re-duce your vision. The glare from sunand snow may blind you to the ex-tent that you cannot easily distinguishravines, ditches or other obstacles.Goggles with colored lenses shouldalways be worn under these condi-tions.

____________ SAFETY INFORMATION ___________ 19

Page 22: Print Preview - Bombardier Recreational Products · new SKI-DOO® snowmobile. What-ever model you have chosen, it is backed by the Bombardier Recre-ational Products Inc. (BRP) warranty

Unseen ObstructionThere may be obstructions hiddenbeneath the snow. Driving off estab-lished trails and in the woods requiresreduced speed and increased vigi-lance. Driving too fast in an area canmake even minor obstacles very haz-ardous. Even hitting a small rock orstump could throw your snowmo-bile out of control and cause injury toits riders. Stay on established trailsto reduce your exposure to hazards.Be safe, slow down and enjoy thescenery.

Hidden WiresAlways be on the lookout for hiddenwires, especially in areas that mayhave been farmed at one time or an-other. Too many accidents have beencaused by running into wires in thefields, guy wires next to poles androads, and into chains and wires usedas road closures. Slow speeds are amust.

Obstacles and JumpingUnplanned jumps of snowdrifts, snowplow ridges, culverts or indistin-guishable objects can be dangerous. You can avoid them by wearing theproper color lenses or face shields andby operating at a lower speed.Jumping a snowmobile is an unsafeand dangerous practice. However, ifthe trail does suddenly drop away fromyou, crouch (stand) towards the rearof the vehicle and keep the skis upand straight ahead. Apply partial throt-tle and brace yourself for the impact.Knees must be flexed to act as shockabsorbers.

TurningDepending on terrain conditions, thereare two preferred ways to turn or cor-ner a snowmobile. For most snowsurfaces, “body english” is the key toturning. Leaning towards the inside ofthe turn and positioning body weighton the inside foot will create a “bank-ing” condition beneath the track. Byadopting this position and positioningyourself as far forward as possible, weight will be transferred to the insideski. On occasion, you will find that the on-ly way to turn the vehicle about indeep snow is to pull the snowmobilearound. Do not over-exert yourself.Get assistance. Remember to alwayslift using your legs as opposed to yourback.

mmo2006-003-005

Road CrossingIn some cases, you will be approach-ing the road from a ditch or snowbank.Choose a place where you know youcan climb without difficulty. Use thestanding position and proceed with on-ly as much speed needed to crest thebank. Stop completely at the top ofthe bank and wait for all traffic to clear.Judge the drop to the roadway. Crossthe road at a 90° angle. If you en-counter another snowbank on the op-posite side, position your feet near therear of the vehicle. Remember, yoursnowmobile is not designed to oper-ate on bare pavement and steering onthis type of surface is more difficult.

Railroad CrossingNever ride on railroad tracks. It is ille-gal. Railroad tracks and railroad rights-of-way are private property. A snow-mobile is no match for a train. Whencrossing a railroad track, stop, look andlisten.

Night RidesThe amount of natural and artificiallight at a given time can effect yourability to see or to be seen. Nighttimesnowmobiling is delightful. It can bea unique experience if you acknowl-edge your reduced visibility. Beforeyou start, make certain your lightsare clean and work properly. Driveat speeds that will allow you to stopin time when you see an unknownor dangerous object ahead. Stay onestablished trails and never operate inunfamiliar territory. Avoid rivers andlakes. Guy wires, barbed wire fences, cabled road entrances and other ob-jects such as tree limbs are difficultto see at night. Never drive alone.Always carry a flashlight. Keep awayfrom residential areas and respect theright of others to sleep.

Safari RidingBefore starting out, designate a “trailboss” to lead the party and anotherperson to follow-up at the end of theparty. Ensure that all members of theparty are aware of the proposed routeand destination. Make certain thatyou are carrying all necessary toolsand equipment and that you havesufficient fuel to complete the trip.Never overtake the trail boss or, forthat matter, any other snowmobile.Use down-the-line hand signals to in-dicate hazards or intent of directionchange. Assist others whenever nec-essary.

It is always IMPORTANT to keep asafe distance between each snowmo-bile. Always maintain a safe intervaland allow sufficient stopping distance.Don't be a tailgater. Know the positionof the machine ahead.

SignalsIf you intend to stop, raise either handstraight above your head. A left turn isindicated by extending your left handstraight out in the proper direction. For right turns, extend the left arm andraise the hand to a vertical position soit forms a right angle at the elbow. Ev-ery snowmobiler should relay any sig-nal to the ones behind.

Trail StopsWhenever possible, pull off the trailwhen you stop. This will reduce thehazard to other snowmobilers usingthe trail.

Trails and SignsTrail signs are used to control, director regulate the use of snowmobiles ontrails. Become familiar with all signsused in the area where you are snow-mobiling.

GENERAL

Wildlife compliments your snowmobil-ing day. Snowmobile tracks providefirm ground over which animals cantravel from area to area. Do not vio-late this privilege by chasing or harass-ing wildlife. Fatigue and exhaustioncan lead to animal's death. Avoid ar-eas posted for the protection or feed-ing of wildlife. If you happen to be fortunate enoughto see an animal, stop your snowmo-bile and observe quietly. The guidelines that we support arenot designed to limit your snowmo-biling fun, but to preserve the beau-tiful freedom that you can experienceonly on a snowmobile! These guide-lines will keep snowmobilers healthy, happy and able to introduce others towhat they know and enjoy about theirfavorite winter pastime. So, the nexttime you hit the trails on a cool, crispand clear winter day, we ask you to re-member that you are paving the wayfor the future of our sport. Help uslead it down the right path! From allof us at BRP, thank you for doing yourshare. There is nothing more exhilaratingthan snowmobiling. Venturing ontosnowmobile trails that criss-cross thewild areas of the U.S. and Canada isan exciting and healthy winter sport. However, as the number of people us-ing these recreational parks increases,so does the potential for damage tothe environment. Abuse of land, fa-cilities and resources inevitably leadsto restrictions and closures of bothprivate and public land.In essence, the greatest threat to oursport, is all around us. Which leavesus with one logical choice. When wesnowmobile, we must always ride re-sponsibly.

The vast majority respect the law andthe environment. Each of us must setan example for those who are new tothe sport, young and old alike. It is in every one's best interest totread lightly into our recreational areas.Because, in the long run, to protect thesport we must preserve the environ-ment.Recognizing the importance of this is-sue and the need for snowmobilers todo their share in preserving areas thatmake it possible to enjoy our sport,BRP has developed the “Light Tread-ing is Smart Sledding” campaign forsnowmobilers.Light Treading refers to more than thethread of our tracks. It's a statementof concern, respect and willingness totake the lead and take action. It ap-plies to the environment in general, itsproper care and maintenance, its natu-ral inhabitants and all enthusiasts andthe public at large who enjoy the greatoutdoors. With this theme, we inviteall snowmobilers to remember that re-specting the environment is not onlycritical to the future of our industry butto future generations.Light Treading in no way suggests youshould curb your appetite for snowmo-biling fun! It simply means tread withrespect!

JUST WHAT IS LIGHT TREADING?

The fundamental objective of LightTreading is one of respect for whereand how you ride a snowmobile. You're a light treader when you followthe principles below.Become informed. Obtain maps, regulations and other informationfrom the Forest Service or from otherpublic land agencies. Learn the rulesand follow them and that goes forspeed limits, too!Avoid running over young trees, shrubs, and grasses and don't cutwood. On flatlands or areas wheretrail riding is popular, it's important toride only where authorized. Remem-ber, there is a link between protectingyour environment and your own safe-ty.Respect wildlife and be particularlysensitive of animals that are rearingyoung or suffering from food short-age. Stress can sap scarce energy re-serves. Refrain from riding in areaswhere only animals are intended totread!Obey gate closures and regulatorysigns and remember, light treadersdon't litter!Stay out of wilderness areas. They'reclosed to all vehicles. Know wherethe boundaries are.Obtain permission to travel acrossprivate land. Respect the rights oflandowners and other people's pri-vacy. Remember, snowmobile tech-nology has lowered the noise factorconsiderably, but you still shouldn'trev your engines where quiet “is theorder of the day”.

WHY IS LIGHT TREADING SMART

Snowmobilers know all too well theefforts that have been made through-out the sport's history to enjoy accessto areas where people can snowmo-bile safely and responsibly. This effortcontinues today, as strong as ever.Respecting the areas where we ride...wherever they may be... is the on-ly way to ensure their future enjoy-ment. That's one major reason whywe know you'll agree that Light Tread-ing Is Smart Sledding! And there aremore.Enjoying the opportunity to see winterand all its natural majestic wonders,is an experience cherished by snow-mobilers. Light Treading will preservethis opportunity and will make it pos-sible for us to expose others to thebeauty of winter and the unique thrillof our sport! Light Treading will helpour sport to grow! Finally, Light Treading is the sign of asmart snowmobiler. You don't have toleave big tracks or careen through a vir-gin forest to show you can ride. Sowhether you're driving a high perfor-mance SKI-DOO, a sporty MX Z snow-mobile or any other make or model, show you know what you're doing.Show you know how to send snow fly-ing and make tracks with a light touch!

RECOMMENDED FUEL AND OIL

Recommended FuelUse regular unleaded gasoline, avail-able from most service stations or oxy-genated fuel containing a maximumtotal of 10% of ethanol or methanolor both. The gasoline used must havethe following recommended minimumoctane number.

LOCATION OCTANE NUMBER

Inside NorthAmerica

(87 (RON +MON)/2) (1)

Outside NorthAmerica 92 RON (1)

(1) This is the minimum octane numberrequired, if not available, (91 (RON +MON)/2) or 95 RON (outside NorthAmerica) can be used.

CAUTION: Never experiment withother fuels or fuel ratios. The use ofnon-recommended fuel can resultin snowmobile performance deteri-oration and damage to critical partsin the fuel system and engine com-ponents. Do not mistake oil reser-voir cap for fuel tank cap. Oil reser-voir cap is identified OIL.

WARNINGAlways stop the engine before re-fueling. Fuel is flammable and ex-plosive under certain conditions.Always work in a well ventilatedarea. Do not smoke or allow openflames or sparks in the vicinity.Open cap slowly. If a differen-tial pressure condition is noticed(whistling sound heard when loos-ening fuel tank cap) have vehicleinspected and/or repaired beforefurther operation. Do not over-fill or top off the fuel tank beforeplacing the vehicle in a warm area.As temperature increases, fuelexpands and might overflow. Al-ways wipe off any fuel spillagefrom the vehicle. Periodically ver-ify fuel system.

Fuel System AntifreezeWhen using oxygenated fuel, addi-tional gas line antifreeze or waterabsorbing additives are not requiredand should be not used. When using non-oxygenated fuel, wehighly recommend the use of iso-propyl base gas line antifreeze in aproportion of 150 ml (5 U.S. oz) ofgas line antifreeze added to 40 liters(10-1/2 U.S. gal) of gas. This precaution is in order to reducethe risk of frost buildup in carburetors/throttle bodies which may lead, in cer-tain cases, to high fuel consumption orsevere damage to engine.NOTE: Use only methyl hydrate freegas line antifreeze.

BREAK-IN PERIOD

EngineCAUTION: A break-in period of10 operating hours — 500 km(300 miles) — is required beforerunning the snowmobile at fullthrottle.During break-in period, maximumthrottle should not exceed 3/4 open-ing. However, brief full accelerationand speed variations contribute to agood break-in.

CAUTION: Engine overheating, continued wide open throttle runsand prolonged cruising withoutspeed variations should be avoid-ed, this can cause engine damageduring the break-in period.

550F and 600 Models

To assure additional protection dur-ing the initial engine break-in, 500 ml(18 imp. oz) of recommended injec-tion oil should be added to fuel for thefirst full filling of fuel tank. Have sparkplugs cleaned after engine break-in.

BeltAll Models

A new drive belt requires a break-in pe-riod of 50 km (30 miles). Avoid strongacceleration/deceleration, pulling aload or high speed cruising.

10-Hour InspectionNOTE: The 10-hour inspection is at theexpense of the snowmobile owner. As with any precision piece of me-chanical equipment, we suggest thatafter the first 10 hours of operation or500 km (300 miles), whichever comesfirst, your snowmobile be checked byan authorized SKI-DOO dealer. This in-spection will also give you the opportu-nity to discuss the unanswered ques-tions you may have encountered dur-ing the first hours of operation.

Towing an AccessoryAlways use a rigid towbar to tow an ac-cessory. Any towed accessory shouldhave reflectors on both sides and atthe rear. Check local laws for brakelight(s) requirements.

WARNINGNever tow an accessory with arope. Always use a rigid towbar.Using a rope would result in a col-lision between the object and thesnowmobile and possibly in a tipover in case of a rapid decelerationor on a downward slope.

Towing AnotherSnowmobileIf a snowmobile is disabled and mustbe towed use a rigid towbar, removethe drive belt from disabled snowmo-bile and tow at moderate speed.

CAUTION: Always remove the drivebelt of the snowmobile that is to betowed to prevent damage to its beltand drive system. In an emergency situation only, if arigid towbar is not available, a rope canbe used provided you proceed withextra caution. (In some areas, it maybe illegal to do so. Check with stateor local authorities).Remove the drive belt, attach the ropeto the ski legs (spindles), have some-one sit on the towed snowmobile toactivate the brake, and tow at lowspeed.

CAUTION: In order to prevent dam-age to the steering system, neverattach the tow rope to the ski loops(handles).

WARNINGNever ride at high speed whentowing a disabled snowmobile.Proceed slowly with extra caution.

Towing an Heavy Loadat Low SpeedV800 Models Only

CAUTION: When towing an heavyload at low speed, engine compart-ment temperature may become hotdue to a lack of air circulation. To reduce engine compartmenttemperature when stopping the ve-hicle, it is always a good practicebefore removing the tether cordcap (DESS key) to do the following:– Let engine idle for approximately

30 seconds.– Stop engine using the engine cut-

out switch.– Engine cooling fan should contin-

ue to work for approximately 30to 45 seconds.

– When engine cooling fan stops, remove tether cord cap (DESSkey).

NOTE: Removing tether cord cap(DESS key) will stop engine coolingfan automatically.

Transporting the VehicleMake sure that oil reservoir and fueltank caps are properly installed.Tilt bed trailers can easily be equippedwith a winch mechanism to affordmaximum safety in loading. Simpleas it may seem, never drive yoursnowmobile onto a tilt bed trailer orany other kind of trailer or vehicle. Many serious accidents have result-ed from driving up and over a trailer.Anchor your vehicle securely, frontand rear, even on short hauls. Becertain all equipment is securely fas-tened. Cover your snowmobile whentrailering to prevent road grime fromcausing damage.Be certain your trailer meets state orprovincial requirements. Ensure thehitch and safety chains are secure andthe brake, turn indicators and clear-ance lights all function.

TYPICAL — FRONT SUSPENSION1. Front shock — handling

The following is to fine-tune suspen-sion.The best way to set up a suspension,is to start from factory settings, thencustomize each adjustment one at atime. Adjustments 2 through 6 areinterrelated. It may be necessary toreadjust center spring after adjustingfront springs for instance. Test runthe snowmobile under the same con-ditions; trail, speed, snow, driver ridingposition, etc. Change one adjustmentand retest. Proceed methodically un-til you are satisfied.

WARNINGDo not attempt to lift the vehicleby hand alone. Use appropriatelifting device or have assistanceto share lifting stress in order toavoid risk of strain injuries.

WARNINGAlways remove tether cord cap(DESS key) before performing anymaintenance or adjustment, un-less otherwise specified. Vehiclemust be parked in a safe place, away from the trail. Always liftthe front of vehicle off the groundwith a suitable lifting device beforeadjusting ski suspension. Lift therear of vehicle off the ground witha suitable lifting device before rearsuspension adjustment.

CAUTION: Whenever adjustingrear suspension, check track ten-sion and adjust as necessary.Slight suspension bottoming occurringunder the worst riding conditions indi-cates a good choice of spring preload.

EPA CERTIFIED ENGINES

Maintenance, replacement, or re-pair of the emission control devicesand systems may be performed byany snowmobile SI (spark ignition)engine repair establishments or in-dividual.

Engine EmissionsInformationManufacturer's ResponsibilitySnowmobile manufacturers of snow-mobile engines need to determinethe exhaust emission levels for eachengine horsepower family and certifythese engines with the United Statesof America Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA). An emissions controlinformation label, showing emissionlevels and engine specifications, mustbe placed on each vehicle at the timeof manufacture.

Dealer's ResponsibilityWhen performing service on a certi-fied SKI-DOO snowmobiles that carryan emissions control information label, adjustments must be kept within pub-lished factory specifications.Replacement or repair of any emissionrelated component must be executedin a manner that maintains emissionlevels within the prescribed certifica-tion standards.Dealers are not to modify the enginein any manner that would alter thehorsepower or allow emission levelsto exceed their predetermined factoryspecifications.Exceptions include manufacturer'sprescribed changes, such as altitudeadjustments for example.

Owner ResponsibilityThe owner/operator is required tohave engine maintenance performedto maintain emission levels within pre-scribed certification standards.

The owner/operator is not to, andshould not allow anyone to modify theengine in any manner that would alterthe horsepower or allow emissionslevels to exceed their predeterminedfactory specifications.

EPA Emission RegulationsAll new SKI-DOO snowmobiles man-ufactured by BRP are certified tothe EPA as conforming to the re-quirements of the regulations for thecontrol of air pollution from new snow-mobile engines. This certification iscontingent on certain adjustmentsbeing set to factory standards. Forthis reason, the factory procedure forservicing the product must be strictlyfollowed and, whenever practicable, returned to the original intent of thedesign. The responsibilities listed above aregeneral and in no way a complete list-ing of the rules and regulations per-taining to the EPA requirements on ex-haust emissions for snowmobile prod-ucts. Drive Pulley Adjustment

WARNINGRemove tether cord cap (DESSkey) before performing any main-tenance or adjustment, unlessotherwise specified. Vehicle mustbe parked in a safe place, awayfrom the trail.

The drive pulley is factory calibrated totransmit maximum engine power at apredefined RPM. Factors such as am-bient temperature, altitude or surfacecondition may vary this critical engineRPM thus affecting snowmobile effi-ciency.This adjustable drive pulley allows set-ting maximum engine RPM to main-tain maximum power.Calibration screws should be adjustedso that actual maximum engine RPMmatches the maximum horsepowerRPM.

ENGINE MAXIMUMHORSEPOWER RPM

550F 6900 RPM (± 100)

600 7000 RPM (± 100)

600 HO SDI 8000 RPM (± 100)

V800 7250 RPM (± 100)

NOTE: Use precision digital tachome-ter for engine RPM adjustment.NOTE: The adjustment has an effecton high RPM only.To adjust, turn calibration screws.Calibration screw has a notch on topof its head.
