Q: Our apartment is on the dark side,
literally. We face the wall of the building
next door, so the living room stays in
constant shadow. We tried to compensate
by lightening the wood floors and using
light beige upholstery. But it is still too
dark. Do you have any other suggestions?
A: It was wise of you to apply the physics
of color to your problem, a solution you’ll
find in many professional designers’ bags
of tricks. They know that color can work
visual magic, raising and lowering ceilings,
stretching the size of a room and changing
its mood. Ditto for slick and shiny surfaces
that reflect light and lift spirits, like a
glossy paint, mirrors, crystals and chrome.
Now you can add wallcoverings to the list
of enlighteners. The cool news from the
wallcoverings industry is about wallpapers
printed in translucent metallic and
pearlescent inks that add quiet shine to
your walls. Other new wallpapers are
dusted with mica chips, glass beads, even
Swarovski crystals so they sparkle and
shimmer in the light.
Many patterns are subtle, often monotone,
the better to play up the reflective
surfaces. In this glimmering living room, a
raised print design of curlicues is defined
with recycled sand and metallic accents.
The sand is applied with nontoxic glue
and clear-coated for durability, according
to the spokesperson for the manufacturer,
York Wallcoverings. (For more about the

Other bright ideas are illuminating
designer rooms in the 2011 Holiday House
in New York through Dec. 11. Presented
by Traditional Home magazine to benefit
Susan G Koman for the cure, the Upper
East Side mansion overflows with
inspiration for holidays of all sorts, from
Christmas and Halloween to Mother’s Day
and birthdays.
New Year’s Eve is especially bright as
rethought by designer Andreea Avram
Rusu. “New Years is a nighttime thing, so
lighting is important,” she explained. Her
room at the Holiday House is wrapped in
dark wallpaper and handwashed with gold
so it sparkles in the light of two
chandeliers she made herself of brass and
stainless discs, Swarovski crystals and
semi-precious stones. “I wanted it to look
like exploding confetti,” Andreea
explained.
No need to wait till New Year’s to
enlighten your own home life. Resolve
now to brighten up the dark side with a
little glitter, gilt and glo

Forget Cars: Park Your Guests in the Garage
Q: Are we crazy to think of converting our
garage into a guesthouse — maybe a
"granny suite"? It has a cathedral ceiling,
concrete slab floor and opens into the
back garden, which is nice. We just need
some encouragement. Plus some ideas,
like what to do about the stained concrete
floor; should we cover it with hardwood or
ceramic tile?
A: Encouragement is easy: with the
American home officially shrinking —
goodbye McMansions, hello smaller
footprints — everyone is scrambling for
more usable space.
(We're not alone: according to a recent
news story in the U.K.'s Daily Mail, some
wealthy Londoners are digging really deep
for more living room — both into their
pockets and below the basements of their
townhouses.)
Garages are high on the hit list for
American families looking for extra space.
You're looking into one in the photo we
show here, used by Author Michael
Litchfield to illustrate his useful new
book, "Inlaws, Outlaws, and Granny Flats
— Your Guide to Turning One House into
Two Homes."
Thanks to the exposed rafters, light and
airy color scheme, the garage feels more
like a bed and breakfast than a place once
meant for parking. The homeowners now
park their weekend visitors there; in the
future, it may be home, long-term, to a
family member, who will find the new
space warm, cozy and welcoming.
Built into the new concrete, they had
poured on top of the existing slab, there's
radiant heating beneath the green slate
floor. Hardwood over radiant heating
tubing is another option (learn more at
Hardwoodinfo.com).
Architect Arleta Chang also designed a
cozy bookcase alcove for the Murphy bed
and used wide, white-painted wood
moldings to bring the soaring ceiling
down to more human size. The kitchen
and bath, unseen in this photo, make the
new space totally independent; an
added-on porch in front makes it open to
communication with the main house.
Another great resource for your endeavor:
an insightful — and inspiring — book
called "Garage," by Kira Obolensky.
Its 262 colorful pages also live up to its
subtitle, "Reinventing the Place We Park."
Q: What should we do with a long hallway
that connects the front entry to the
kitchen? It opens into the living room
through an archway and into the guest
bath before it gets to the kitchen. If we
paint the hall one color — we're thinking
of a warm yellow — do we have to use that
yellow in the other rooms that open off
the hall?
A: Nice, but not necessary. An accessory
here or there should be tie-in enough.
Were we talking about wallpapering that
hall, however, top designer Ronald
Redding has a formula to share. Redding
is the award-winning design director for
York Wallcoverings (whom we interviewed
last week), and he knows how to make the
utmost of a wallpaper's pattern and color.
In a hallway, he says, avoid busy patterns.
Opt instead for a stripe, say, something
tone-on-tone that eases your passage. "A
hall is a thoroughfare," Redding reminds.
In a power room opening off that hall, he
suggests, "something punchy on the walls,"
perhaps an over-scaled pattern that repeats
colors from the hallway paper.
"It's not so that a small room demands a
small pattern only," he says, shattering a
persistent bit of conventional thinking.

are up to lately at www.yorkwall.com.

A touch of class: Cool Stuff
Wall coverings with texture -- truly tactile or trompe l'oeil – can make a simply furnished or
small room extra interesting. These papers and decals will appeal to minimalists and those with
petite spaces, or anyone with a too-bare stretch of wall.
“Pucker Up Buttercup” by York Wallcoverings smacks of fun design. The pattern is made up of sketches reminiscent of Gibson Girls, some with ruby-red lips that catch the eye. The wallcoverings are made from renewable resources and contain low VOCs. $104 per double roll at Interiors & Extras, 324 Metairie Road, Metairie

Putting the Kitsch in Kitchens
Kitchen Contours is just one pattern in the Bistro 750 collection from York.
Lemons are the theme of this other Bistro 750 pattern, which also is available in black and lime green on white as well as rust and yellow on white.
Place settings of silverware whimsically grace Silverware with Damask, another pattern in Bistro 750.
Kitchens have become sooo serious of late.
Maybe it's the popularity of gourmet TV
shows. celebrity chefs and space-age
appliances, but many kitchens in the last
few years have become less warm and cozy
and more like sleek and severe shrines to
haute cuisine.
However, kitchens don't have to feel as
stressful as an episode of "Iron Chef." They
can be as happy as any other room in the
house, suggests York Wallcoverings which
has put the fun back in kitchens with its
new “Bistro 750” collection.
Named after York's 750 Linden Street
headquarters in York, Penn., where it
cooks up all its designs, Bistro 750 is a
savory mix of novelty designs depicting
fanciful fruit, cutlery, kitchen utensils and
coffee cups. Colorways in the collection
encompass avocado, mustard and salmon
grounded with peppery blacks and salty
whites.
A prime example is Silverware with
Damask, a graphic rendering of a flatware
setting. The pattern is available in putty,
white and stainless steel on red (KB8566);
stainless steel, white and black on ivory
(KB8567); teal, white and lime on ivory
(KB8568); and stainless steel, white and
taupe on charcoal (KB8569).
Lemons are the theme of this other Bistro
750 pattern, which also is available in
black and lime green on white as well as
rust and yellow on white.
Another very retro and colorful pattern is
Kitchen Contours, which features a
collection of useful kitchen tools available
in white on black (KB8593); white on teal
(KB8590); white on beige (KB8591); white
on canary yellow (KB8595); white on
salmon (KB8596); silver on white
(KB8598); white on ruby red (KB8599);
and white on lime (KB8600).
Vintage in feel yet thoroughly modern,
the patterns serve up an easy way to
update a kitchen without the cost of a full
remodel ... truly some food for thought!

Ring It InI just love having my friends and family over to help ring in the New Year. To keep things simple, I like to set up a hearty spread of appetizers that everyone ca graze from all night long. By filling my menu with plenty of dishes that I can make ahead—like most of the recipes in this chapter—I have plenty of time to enjoy my guests. This little entertaining trick also gives me time to make sure I catch Michael under the mistletoe a few times, too.

This is wallpaper? Trends incorporate faux treatments, glittering jewels and 3-D effects
Candice Olson Dimensional Surfaces Collection
Mystic Vine GC0857 from Stacy Garcia Luxury Wallpapers
Celebrities reinvent themselves all the time,
so why not a design element that has graced
walls since the days of ancient Rome? Playing
second fiddle to plaster and paint since the
'90s, wallpaper is shaking things up in the
design world again with curiously inviting
surfaces, tone-on-tone patterns, surprising
color schemes and sparkling embellishments.
Here, three top trends:
Traditional, with a twist
Traditional patterns look new in fresh color
palettes. "Blue Mountain" from Sherwin-
Williams reinvents a classic damask in
chocolate on turquoise (www.sherwin-
williams.com/do_it_yourself/wallpaper),
while Cole & Son gives mauve and orange
hues to vaguely familiar patterns in its Classic
Exotic Flock line. (www.cole-and-son.com) At
Farrow & Brown, the Broccato Papers
collection's lavender "Crivelli Rose" renews a
brocaded design of oak-tree plumes, acorns,
roses and trellising (us.farrow-ball.com), and
at Stark Wallcovering, "Lace, Beaded Black,"
created by British textile and wallpaper
designer Jocelyn Warner, pays tribute to
broderie anglaise lace with a graphic
black-on-white interpretation of it (www.
jocelynwarner.com/products/wallpaper/lace/
beaded-black).
Modern wallpapers are also replicating
traditional woods. From Wallpaper
Collective, "Scrapwood," designed by Dutch
designer Piet Hein Eek, captures the look of
old, distinctly colored vertical planks
(wallpapercollective.com/designers/
piet-hein-eek/scrapwood.html). Meanwhile,
masonry and the look of a well-loved library
comes from "Bookshelf," a clever offering of
Basildon Wallpapers' Special Effects
collection (www.wallpaperandborders.co.uk).
Artistic applications
Modular wall coverings -- available with
intricately carved wood, metal, vinyl and
even leather panels -- are also springing up in
paper formats. Mioculture's modular,
recycled paper-form collections are available
in styles with names like "Flow," "Ripple" and
"Acoustic Weave" (mioculture.com).
Designers Jaime Salm and Kris Daniel
created the lightweight 3-D wallpaper tiles on
the theory that two dimensions simply aren't
enough, and DIYers can rotate and paint
individual tiles for unique results.
Paintable papers have also come on strong
this year. "Eden," a paintable paper with a
leafy texture from Graham & Brown, can be
hung in its pure white state or painted to
your color scheme (www.grahambrown.com/
us/index).
And to get truly interactive with your
wallpaper try "Frames: Black & White" by
Graham & Brown artists Taylor & Wood.
The lively pattern of whimsical geometrics
encourages doodling, piecemeal painting and
ever-changing displays of keepsakes and small
family photos.
Bling's the thing
Wallpaper gets glamorous with
enhancements like metallic shine, lacquer
and even crystals. At York Wallcoverings,
Candice Olson Dimensional Surfaces
enhances papers with glass, sand and metallic
thread, while offerings like "Mystic Vine"
from Stacy Garcia Luxury Wallpapers buff
up a botanical theme with embedded glass
beads (www.yorkwall.com). Maya Romanoff
specializes in designing exotic wall coverings
from paper that feels like leather (www.
mayaromanoff.com). This year's True Paper
Croc, embossed with a crocodile pattern and
lacquered with latex for durability and gloss,
comes in gleaming hues like a crimson Ruby
Roo and a popular Saddle Brown.
Swarovski Elements takes things a step
further by embedding crystals in several
wallpaper patterns (www.swarovski-elements.
com/wallpaper). "Plume" depicts velvet-
flocked ostrich feathers against a solid
backdrop styled with a metallic leather effect,
then puts the finishing touch with tiny
Cabochon pearls and Xilion crystals on the
quills. And for those on a budget, Design
Your Wall's Glitter Collection offers options
like "Iridescent Paisley Damask" and
"Iridescent Reflective Green Stripes"
