celebrates its second birthday Duffield housewives andmothers Rachel Sulley (left)and Bronwen Skinner tooka real chance when theyjoined forces and openedDelicious, a deli andsandwich shop at 6Wirksworth Road, Duffield. With the closure of LesleyLloyd’s Country Larder theythought there was anunfulfilled niche in thevillage and now, exactly twoyears later, Delicious is notonly a place to get a bite toeat, it provides a high qualityoutside catering service for awide range of events, business lunches, weddings, parties and other specialoccasions.“We are delighted with theon-going support we arereceiving from the villagersand Ecclesbourne students inparticular,” say the couple. With children of their ownthey had a pretty good idea ofwhat youngsters wanted andthey added ideas of their own

to give plenty of healthyeating alternatives.“We pride ourselves onoffering the best quality itemsfrom top class suppliers, providing a widening rangeof takeaway food and drinksincluding sandwiches ofcourse, but also oven-bakedpotatoes, paninis, soup andsalads, pastries and hot andcold drinks. There is also a free localdelivery service forreasonably sized orders. They are sticklers for qualityand have built up a list of top, award winning suppliers for awidening selection of food.“We want to say thanks for allthe support and hopefully thebusiness will continue formany years to come,” saidRachel.Delicious can be contactedon 843311 to discuss yourrequirements and they arealready preparing forXmas.

These pictures, taken on24th September, show someof the wreckage left by over30 youths the night before.I also understand the Policewere called to an incidenton Park road near by, I’msure it was fuelled by thecontents of some of the cansyou see in the pictures.I read with interest anddisbelief the article...“Give usa chance”.Point 1.The young individualcondemned the litter & messcaused by drinking around thestreets, very commendable, but everyone must be made torealise that this is just asymptom of the real problem,“Anti-social behaviour”.

Gangs of youths ( sometimesmore than 30 in numbers ),underage drunks loiteringaround residential areascreating noise & damagingproperty, that is the realproblem!Point 2.This young person claimed towrite on behalf of theDuffield youth; can I ask whowrites on behalf of the un-desirables which migratefrom Little-Eaton to causemayhem. The Police are familiar withcertain individuals who cometo Duffield to do theirunderage drinking andnuisance behaviour. Why Duffield?Point 3.The young writer is very

mistaken that underagedrinking around thestreets is illegal; more isthe pity. I suggest we push to seea local bye lawintroduced, as in Belper,to make it illegal. There is no good reasonwhy large groups of youngindividuals should be allowedto wonder the streets drinkingfreely; It will only result inanti-social and nuisancebehaviour.Point 4.He also states they have verylittle money; I see increasingnumbers of youths strugglingto carry shopping bags full ofbeer - I would estimate £15-20 per bag. Where do theybuy it or do they steal it?Point 5.And the best one of all,“there’s nothing for youths todo”. Is it so depressing its drivingthem to drink, I think not!

There has never been more todo around Duffield; SquashClub, Tennis Club, Gym,Cricket juniors, Footballjuniors and several fast foodoutlets. I would agree is notvery cosmopolitan but its notbad for a small village. Another example, £15-20would get you to and fromthe UCI cinema. In any case, take another lookat the photographs. Is it fairjustification that youths canget away with this type ofbehaviour just because theybelieve there’s nothing to do?No, it must be stopped, something must be done!Regards,Mr D Chambers.

‘THE DECLINE OF DUFFIELD CONTINUES’Reader’s letter

a response to the article inthe September issue of theDuffield Scene “Give us a

chance.”

One night last month I wokein the middle of the night.I’d finished the book I wasreading before I went tosleep and had neglected tobring another title up to bedwith me. As sleep evaded me, indesperation, I picked up anold Georgette Heyerpaperback, Bath Tangle. I hadn’t read it in years, it wasgathering dust on my bedside

table.I’d quite forgotten thejoys of rereading. It was like visiting an oldfriend I hadn’t seen for manyyears. I used to readGeorgette Heyer’s regencyromances over and over again, when my children weregrowing up. My copies are all well lovedand well worn. Over time Ithink I collected them all. My favourites are The

Nonsuch, Frederica, and TheGrand Sophy, but they are allgreat fun. I know these bookswell. Too well, I had thoughtbut they still have the powerto make me laugh and smile. I noticed the other day thatthey have been recentlyreprinted for anothergeneration to enjoy. Since so many people lookdown on romance novels, often without ever having readone, its been a great surpriseto see how many writers ofhigh brow literary fiction arenot ashamed to claim thesefun little regency romps asone of their influences. As another of her fans,Margaret Drabble, says:‘Thisis literary escapism, becauselife isn’t quite like that, butreading can be.’Amongst the new books I readthis month there was anotherreal star, Gone with Windsors,by Laurie Graham. The title is a fairly obviouspun on Margaret Mitchell’s

famous novel, and there are alot of gorgeous mistakes andmisunderstandings as richAmerican, Maybell Brumby, malaprops her way roundBritish high society of the late1920s and early 1930s.She is a rich friend of WallisSimpson, who has knownWallis since her school days, thus she witnesses theabdication crisis from theinside. The novel is told in the formof her diaries, which havebeen saved from destructionby the family, by a youngrelative.

Duffield Parish Council News Letter - Issue No. 26(October 2005)

Contacts Roger Bostock Parish Clerk & RFO 01629 581080 Sally Bygraves Asst Clerk & Treasurer 842368 Cllr Nick Storer, Chairman 07773720015

With the coming of Autumn, the Parish Council has once moresupported the Amber Valley and Erewash Walking Festivalthis year. The Clerk led the eight-mile walk again this year, which took in the glories of the Ecclesbourne Valley, with 17walkers braving the lovely, late summer’s day. As usual thewalk commenced from Eyes Meadow and passed through theold part of the village, then along Duffield Meadows.continuing on up a steady climb to Hazelwood, before finallydescending down to the Puss in Boots Beer Garden for lunch.

The walk continued uphill past Champion Farm to the top ofQuarndon Hill, before descending back down to Eyes Meadow. Thanks are due to Councillor Pauline Buckle, the AssistantClerk and the Village Tidyman for helping to ensure that weachieved another successful and enjoyable walk.

Parish Council Meetings due to be held during the remainderof the year in the Meeting Room are as follows:11 Oct 2005 Parish Council Meeting @7.00pm08 Nov 2005 Parish Council Meeting @7.00pm22 Nov 2005 Finance and GP Committee @7.00pm13 Dec 2005 Finance and GP Committee @7.00pm

Division Mobile Police Office - Parish RotaAt the time of going to press, details of the “A” Division MobilePolice Office coming visits to Duffield were unavailable.

For Crime Prevention advice contact the local Police on 0845123 33 33 or contact PC Nigel Coulstock on 01773 571875

Anyone with any information about burglaries or any othercrime call CRIMESTOPPERS anonymously on 0800555 111.

**************************************************

The Parish Council are pleased to advise residents that theEnvironment Agency have finally agreed that some work isrequired in the river Ecclesbourne and they will beendeavouring to undertake the maintenance this year should anyother project not go ahead. If this does not prove possible, this project will be put into themaintenance programme for next year. The Borough Councilhas also agreed to cut and remove the vegetation in the concreteopen channel to the rear of the properties in Wirksworth Roadimminently. However they reiterate that they still believe thiswork to be the responsibility of the adjoining land owners.

The Parish Council wishes to confirm that their annual Bonfireand Firework Display will take place as usual on EyesMeadow on Saturday 5th November 2005.The fire will be lit at 7.30pm and tickets can be purchased inadvance for £2.50 adults and £1.50 concessions from DuffieldNews, the Duffield Fish Bar and the Meadow Vale Shop. Ticketscan also be purchased at the entrance gate on the night for£3.50 adults and £2.50 concessions.

**************************************************

The Parish Council wants to seek the views of non-dogwalking users of Eyes Meadow and Gray Recreation Groundregarding dog control issues in these areas.

**************************************************

Residents will be aware that the Parish Council has beenconsidering the introduction of CCTV Cameras in Duffield forsome time, particularly in the light of various criminal and anti-social incidents in the village in recent times.Last year the Parish Council established that to provide a two-camera CCTV system in Duffield would cost £35,000 in thefirst year, plus £10,000 / annum in maintenance charges insubsequent years. Obviously this level of expenditure would have had a cripplingeffect on the Council’s budget and a significantly higher chargelevel for local rate payers would have been required for verylittle effective coverage. The Parish Council did however approach local businesses totry and obtain financial support for the scheme; some smalloffers were made but nothing of the scale of funding required.Efforts were then made to try and make use of the numerousprivately owned systems in use in Duffield. To this end the Police were requested to provide the ParishCouncil with the location of all non-monitored CCTVinstallations in the village, in order to progress this idea. This request was unfortunately rejected on security grounds.Duffield Squash Club were also asked if their CCTV systemhad any spare capacity that could be used for Communitypurposes. However the capacity they had was earmarked for other uses.In the final analysis therefore, the Parish Council have taken theview that there is no great demand in the village or the provisionof a costly CCTV system, which would be of limited additionalbenefit, bearing in mind the numerous private schemes in use inDuffield, some of which have still been the victims of criminalactivity.

**************************************************

The Parish Council has been receiving some complaintsregarding the Borough Council’s new recycling scheme. These mainly seem to concern the lack of lids on the boxes froma Health and Safety point of view and a demand for the GreenBox to be re-introduced. Is this the feeling generally?

WATCH OUT FOR DISTRACTION BURGLARSDistraction burglary is aparticularly nasty crimetargeted at vulnerablepeople, usually but notexclusively, the elderly.Offenders pose as being fromutility companies, roofingrepairs or other such pretext toget invited into the victim’shome. A recent incident in Duffieldwas an offender posing as apoliceman. Once inside they may employsome ruse, eg getting thehouseholder to turn the wateron and off whilst the offender‘checks out the pipes in thebathroom’ whereas, in reality, they are searching the homefor the victim’s cash andvaluables. Often there will be more thanone offender, with onekeeping the victim engagedwhilst the other searches thehouse. Another method is ayoungster claiming to havelost a ball in the garden andwhilst the victim helps themsearch, an accomplice slips inthe house and steals.

The elderly are particularlyvulnerable as the average ageof a distraction burglaryvictim is 8l years, most oftenfemale and living alone. This can be because people ofsuch age were brought up intimes when society seemedmuch safer. People did not always locktheir doors, everyone wasrespectful of their elders andthe caller at the door would bewho they said they were. So the elderly will often betoo trusting. They are good mannered andtend to automatically invite acaller into their home. Another reason is that all tooften the elderly are isolatedand lonely, so they welcome acaller - it might be the onlyperson they talk to that day. Many elderly people willrespond unquestioningly to aperson that they perceive to bein authority. A major factor in makingthem a target is that theelderly will often not trustbanks, preferring to keep

their cash in the house.Police Officers believe thereis a massive under reportingof this offence - less than 1 in10 being reported for whichthere are a number of reasons:A victim may not realise thatthey have been a victim oftheftThe elderly are generallyproud people and may be tooembarrassed to tell theirfamily People value their independenceand many feel if they report thecrime they may be pressured togo into a ‘home’.To be a victim of crime isupsetting for anyone. For theelderly to have their home andtrust violated, to lose theirhard-saved cash andvaluables, the effect can bedevastating, with decline andeven death following adistraction burglary being notuncommon. The criminals who specialisein this type of crime, identifyvictims by looking for tell-talesigns:Lack of’ maintenance of home

or garden may indicate aperson lacking mobilitySingle bottle of milk outsideequals lone occupantClosed windows in warmweather suggests lack ofmobility by householderWe can help each other bykeeping a watchful eye overvulnerable neighbours andreporting suspicious incidentsto the police. Regular visits will be adeterrent to offenders andtackle loneliness of a potentialvictim (although I do realisethis is not always possible orwelcome!)The elderly have aright to expect care fromsociety – any of us could be inthis situation in the future!

A magnificent 168 by Aussieskipper Zac Pacey againstAlfreton led Duffield to thevictory they needed topreserve their place inDivision One for nextseason. It’s hoped that all rounderPacey - he scored 1,077 runs

and took 38 wickets - willreturn next season andmeanwhile a search is goingon to bolster the strength of aside which relied to heavily onPacey and fellow all rounderEd Sims and Balraj Johal.Dave Halliday had a usefulfirst season, but too often the

rest of the batting was foundwanting. The bowling was steady butlacked someone with pace touse the new ball. There was a similar tale inthe 2nd XI. All rounders Mark Antill and

skipper Adam Short enjoyedsuccess but a cutting edge wasneeded in the bowling andmore depth in the batting. The third XI, continuing apolicy of playing at least fivejuniors, showed a markedimprovement (see page 11).
