The Brazilian author PAULO COELHO was born in 1947 in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Before dedicating completely to literature, he also worked as theatre director and actor, lyricist and journalist.Coelho wrote song lyrics for many fafamous performers in Brazilian music, such as Elis Regina and Rita Lee. His fascination with the spiritual quest dates back to his hippie days, when he travelled the world learning about secret societies, oriental religions, etc.In 1982 Coelho published his first book, HHell Archives, which failed to make anykind of impact. In 1985 he contributedto the Practical Manual of Vampirism,PAULO COELHO did the pilgrimage to Saint James of Compostella, an experience documented in his book The Pilgrimage.

SmallDog Rescue and Humane Society (SmallDog Rescue) is a tax-exempt non-profit organization dedicated to finding loving families for homeless dogs in North Atlanta.

We do not shy away from taking sick, abandoned or difficult

dogs into our program.

excellent medical care for all of our little orphans. Our vol-unteers work tirelessly fostering, training, socializing, and giving the dogs all of the loving care that they so deserve. Thanks to our adopters and supporters for helping us to rescue hundreds of dogs!!!.

Surrendered family pets are often already housebroken, neuter and sicialiced, eager to please their new owners with new tricks.

Pet shops and internet sites are the main destination for puppy mill dogs. Not only do they abuse their breeding animals , they send sick dogs to be sold top dollar prices!

People do not discriminate when they abandon their dogs. A study of 12 US shelter confirmed 30% of their dogs are pure bred.

Surrendered dogs are handeled daily by loving volunteers and knowledgeable staff. New arrivals are screened for any type of agression. The few animals that un fortunately do show this type of behavior are fosteresd by our profeprofesionals for rehabilitation.

T he Pies Descalzos Foundation was born in Barranquilla, a city on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, in the mid-1990s,

when at the age of 18 recording artist Shakira decided to take on the commitment of advocating for the education, nutrition and health of her country’s most vulnerable popula-tion: CHILDREN

The Foundation runs programs to help underprivileged children and their families, providing genuine solutions that help improve their quality of life. Thanks to our programs, these children have the opportunity of exercising their basic right to receive an education, paving the way for their growth and development in society. Through programs guided by principles of quality, capability and self-management, the Foundation is determined to operate efficiently, to increase the available resources and to work for the boys and girls whose lives have been disrupted by violence and poverty.

Mission

To contribute to the comprehensive development of school-age children in high- risk, vulnerable communities and/or in population groups displaced by the violence in Colombia, using education and nutrition as a fundamental strategy to prevent school desertion and child labor.

Vision

To be a socially sustainable and efficient corporation that increases the available resources, dedicated working on behalf of children who have been displaced by the violence through a series of programs that are guided by principles of quality and capability for self-management. The mission and vision of the Pies Descalzos Foundation goes beyond the offer of nutrition, educa-tion and psychosocial support for Colombia’s displaced and most vulnerable population.

Realizing the need to improve the precarious conditions of the buildings where the most underprivileged children attend school, we are actively participating in improvement proj-ects in order to help these kids have access to a quality education. Thanks to this program, the children now have more space and improved facili-ties at the schools where we run our programs.

Our Programs

God Parent Program

With a monthly gift of $30 you can help a child receive a good education and uniforms, books, nutritious food, recreational activities and sports. As a sponsor, you get to provide for the child’s basic needs, but even more importantly, you can connect with the child in a loving relationship, monitoring the child’s growth and development and seeing his/her quality of life improve. When you join this program, you will receive a picture of the child as well as a letter with his/her life story. Projects

Descalzos school at Corregimiento La Playa, a district in the city of Barranquilla, with the capacity for 1,800 children and a community of 21,000 people within its sphere of influ-ence. The parents, grandparents and children will also have access to vocational programs, health services and income-generating projects offered at the new facilities, which is bound to become Barranquilla’s most important institu-tion within a few years.

The school will be built thanks to contributions by donors like Shakira, with proceeds from her 2006 Barranquilla concert, and other contributors like the German television network RTLTV, the city of Madrid, Hard Rock Café, SEAT and others who will join our list of sponsors.


Interview with Shakira

What comes to your mind when you think about the time your parents took you to the Suri Salcedo Park in Barranquilla?

The day that I learned about the financial crisis. My father and mother had lost their business. I was about 7 or 8 and very frustrated, because I understood that my life wasn’t going to be the same again. So they took me to the park to show me a reality that was even harder than mine. And it made an impact on me to see kids sniffing glue to forget the hunger, orphans, abandoned. It was so bad that I became obsessed with the idea of doing something, one day, for those kids. That’s why, when I decided to create Pies Descalzos, the main cause was the unprotected youth. And when the years passed and the number of displaced children was growing, I called Maria Emma Mejía and decided to increase the support that was given to the children with what I earn from my own presentations. And she has done a perfect job that makes me love and admire her. To me it’s very important to know what is happening with every one of those children; because I know them, I know their names and their stories. They have become something essential in my life, something addictive

In 2007 we concentrated all our efforts, as well as the efforts of our donors, on improving the quality of the education provided, by choosing an innovative pedagogical model for each of our schools. Additionally, 2007 was a year during which we were able to solidify the income-generat-ing initiatives though parent cooperatives, which have so far created 250 new jobs. The Foundation is facing its biggest challenge yet during 2007 and 2008: with the help of public, private and multilateral organizations and financial contributions by Shakira and other donors, we plan to build another Fundación Pies Descalzos school in the Corregimiento La Playa district in Barranquilla. The new school will expand the academic and community programs, reaching out to more than 21,000 residents in the region. Currently, the Pies Descalzos Foundation programs are assisting 4,020 children and adolescents in our schools and vocational centers.
