SENIOR THEATRESPORT NEWS - A REFLECTION OF THE ABHS SPIRIT

On Wednesday 15th May the ABHS Senior Theatresport Team travelled to PLC Croydon for their first heat. As previously reported by Mr Hopwood, the boys placed equal second with PLC Croydon, and have moved through to the semi-finals. The boys competed with more energy, enthusiasm and sophisticated creativity than we have seen from them before. From the first round their narratives were on FIRE; their storylines and characterisations were clear, sharp and neatly constructed. These continually refined skills, allowed their scores to be solid from the very beginning, and placed them easily in the required top 4 spots. However, it must be noted that behind the five talented Senior Players stood a phenomenal support team. A generous group of boys that spent time timing the games, providing game locations, and specific feedback, in the weeks leading up to the competition. These students not only

worked with the team, but also followed them to the competition to cheer them on. The players and I would like to thank Alfie Jellett, Dari Elhami-Manesh, Sebastian Cutcherwirth, John Han and Silas Newton. This type of support and commitment from fellow students is what makes ABHS and Theatresports an amazing environment to be a part of.

Ms Kate Stitt

The Shakespeare carnival is an enjoyable and educational way to highlight what we have learnt in English about plays by William Shakespeare. The Shakespeare carnival is where classes compete with each other, and with other classes. Students have the option to adapt a Shakespeare text into a film, ensemble/mashup, duologue or other suggested formats. The winners for each category may move onto the Regional Carnival and compete with other schools. The winners from there then go onto the State Final. The Shakespeare Carnival is a truly fun experience where you learn plenty, and consolidate knowledge for our future English studies. -Kush Kumar (9)

I thought it was very good except the screen we watched the movies on was too small!!. I think we need a BIG screen for next year to show our movies. - Henry (7T)

It was a really nice chance to see what the other classes were doing, and we had lots of fun watching their films. - Alfie (8B) I really enjoyed how it was organised, and the fact that it provided a new way of learning Shakespeare. - Atreiiu (8B) Alex Whitting

I think that the Shakespeare Carnival was an amazing experience to feel what it was like back in Shakespeare’s day.-Ben (8B)

The Shakespeare Carnival was an amazing way to learn about Shakespeare. It is also interesting seeing how all the other groups adapted the text they studied in class and turned it into either a movie, duologue or devised mash up.-Trey Pohe (8B)

A SURPRISED INVITATION

It was a privilege to have received a personal invitation from our high achieving alumni of 2018, Kishan Kharka, as a guest audience to the Dalyell Showcase at the University of Sydney this Tuesday. The Dalyell Scholars Program is an invitation only program for the University’s most talented students and Kishan’s presentation on the detection of Alzheimer’s disease using complex biochemistry further cemented his reputation as an exceptional talent during his years in Ashfield Boys. The night was made better still

when Pranu Pathmendra, one of Ashfield’s high achieving alumni in 2017, was introduced as one of the research group’s leader. It was an absolute delight to see Pranu excel beyond comprehension and using his wisdom and knowledge to guide and nurture his younger peers at a tertiary level.

Some say the best gift to be received as a teacher is to be taught by your students years after they have graduated. This saying cannot be truer as the night ended and my head ached from all the knowledge gained from the presentations.

Best headache for a long time.

GEOGRAPHY FIELDWORK HOMEBUSH WETLANDS

AND OLYMPIC PARK

Year 8 Geography was involved in fieldwork activities at Olympic Park covering units on Valuing and Managing Water and Interconnections during Week 3 this term. water quality and tidal movement at Powell’s Creek importance and maintenance of the mangrove ecosystem global significance of the waterbird refuge history of the shipwreck site and its impacts on the environment interconnections of the Wentworth Point and Rhodes communities significance of the bay markers found around the Olympic Park site study of the water recycling plant environmental issues and uses of the former brick pit

Year 8 will wind up their studies in Geography at the end of the term. The beginning of Term 3 will see the students continuing their History studies of Ancient communities.

FOOTBALL U13AS

Ashfield Boys’ Football Under 13As started with a hard slog against Epping Boys High School. Magnus broke the stalemate in his best match to date. He played off Tanakorn and Jacob to bring home two goals in the first half. In the second half, Epping made a strong return and opened with a goal. This was offset by Imran’s incredible longshot goal, across the heads of both teams. Jacob’s persistence paid off, as he snuck in a goal in the final minute of play. Epping put up a good fight and both teams played well, with good sportsmanship, ending with 4-1 win to Ashfield.
