Dwayne Hopwood Principal

Thanks to the P&C and especially the P&C Vice President Louise Brooks for their ongoing commitment to raising

funds for the benefit of all the boys. We were notified yesterday by the Inner West Council that we have been

successful in our grant application for $19,500 to construct an amphitheatre and outdoor classroom space.

Upgrading the school’s facilities, including the outdoor play spaces for the boys, is part of our three-year school

strategic plan. Thanks of course to the Inner West Council for granting us the funding.

MUSICIANS IN THE MAKING

Year 8 music students have been working on playing instruments such as guitars and keyboards. The boys have learnt to develop correct technique and play pop and rock riffs fluently. The opportunity to perform and play for each other continues to give them confidence. It is great to unlock and develop their hidden potential and see the progression of their fine motor skills, hand eye coordination and improved memory.

GRADE VOLLEY BALL UPDATE

The 1st and 2nd grade volleyball teams have been working diligently leading up to and throughout this season’s competition. They are giving their best each week, both on and off the court, at times displaying impressive rallies reaching more than 15 hits! I would like to commend the boys on their dedication to the improvement of their individual skills and support they have for each other. This is what has lifted the team’s performance and overall enjoyment and enthusiasm for the game. Great work!

EXPLORING EARTH’S RESOURCES

Year 7 students are studying

Earth’s resources in Term 4. To

support this unit of work, the

kNOw WasteTM

Education

Program which focuses on the

concepts of waste

management, waste processing

and the environmental impacts

of waste will visit ABHS. The

free workshop will take place

on Tuesday 13th December for

all Year 7 classes.

FUTSAL - A GAME OF PASSION THAT TAKES THE BEST OUT OF YOU!

Three Ashfield teams have played highly entertaining futsal games against North Sydney in very demanding weather conditions at Olympic Park. Our junior A team played with only one direction, that is, to go forward and try to score goals. This style of football created gaps in defence which opposition players were able to utilize. North Sydney played better at the crucial moments of the game, winning 3-0. Our second grade team was desperate to bounce back from a very disappointing loss to Epping the previous week. The great composure, brilliant one on one defence and patience in attack made a difference. After scoring a crucial first goal half way through the first half, our boys demonstrated great composure closing down the game 2-0. Seven days after recording a memorable and a season changing victory over Epping (3-2) our first grade team yet again played a flourishing style of football. Handicapped by a loss of our best goal keeper, Alessio, but boosted by return of our main striking weapon Caelan, our boys were in command for the majority of the game. North Sydney's goal keeper was the main reason the game ended 4-2 our way. The end of the game was a good wake up call to all our players that the game is played until the last second as we conceded two goals with only seconds remaining on the clock.

VALIDATION OF ASSESSMENT 4 LEARNING AND INDIVIDUAL /DEVELOPMENT WILL BE HELD IN WEEK 4-5

A reminder to all students in Year 8 to bring their earphones/ headset to class in preparation for the VALID science test. VALID is an online end-of-stage assessment for the Science KLA. VALID will assist schools and parents to monitor student achievement. VALID replaces the Essential Secondary Science Assessment (ESSA). The structure and delivery of the tests is similar to ESSA online. The assessment will be conducted on the following days per class.

P&C FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE

The P&C would like to set up a fundraising committee to help coordinate a fundraising event for Term 1 2017. The P&C generally hold 2 events per year. This year we only held an election day BBQ so it would be nice to hold an event to welcome new parents to the school and foster relationships with parents that have already been at the school this past year. A meeting has been set up for Nov 10 @ 8pm at the Ashfield Bowling Club. If you are able to come please email [email protected] Look forward to meeting you. Louise Brooks Vice President ABHS P&C
