Principles of training

• Each person has a different reason for exercising, eg leisure, competition, professional or personal pride

• A person trains to improve performance

• When the principles of training are applied, improvements in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, fitness, strength, endurance and skill might be expected

• Each of the principles shows the way in which the body is affected by the degree and type of exercise undertaken

Principles of training

• As everyone’s fitness level differs, systematic training must take into account the performer’s individual needs

• Setting the demands and intensity at a personal level ensures the safety of the performer

• If the demands are set too low, there will be no improvement

• If the demands are set too high, injuries might occur

• Top-class athletes have a final competition in mind — the training process is systematically planned so they reach a peak of performance to coincide with that event
