Pressurized steam and chemicals are two means.
Every surgical instrument is a potential source for contamination.

Autoclave The device used to sterilize the
instruments. Instruments are wrapped in special
packs. Water is boiled at 250 degrees for
15-30 minutes. Autoclave has a tight seal allowing
for pressure buildup.
