Newsletter Term 1 Week 2 2021 Principal’s message Welcome to the 2021 school year at Summer Hill Public School! With restrictions easing we are excited that some of the learning experiences and activities we were unable to provide students in 2020 can go ahead in 2021. Already, I am proud the way our students have returned, ready to learn, ready to share what they have learned over the holidays, ready to meet new teachers and ready to meet new friends. We have many new faces joining us this year at Summer Hill Public School, namely our Kindergarten students, Year 5 students in our Opportunity Class, Year 3 students from Yeo Park Infants School, new families, new SAS staff and new teachers! Welcome Ms Scotton School Counsellor, Ms Ho English as an Additional Language/dialect teacher, Ms Payne Year 1 teacher, Ms Lane Year 1 teacher, Ms Rawson Stage 2 Assistant Principal and Year 2 teacher, Ms Kelly Year 6 teacher and Ms Nohra School Administration Officer. MISs Jackson is also relieving as Deputy Principal for Term 1 in Mr Warnock’s absence. We are all looking forward to a productive year of learning for our students, families and staff. Best Start for our Kindergarten students was a success, and Kindergarten students started school full time today – all 81 of them! Our annual swimming carnival will go ahead on 3 March - one of many up and coming events, activities and celebrations. We also look forward to working closely with the P&C events planning team for some combined P&C events in 2021; we hope you can join us. The big question being asked is ‘will we be having a Spring Fair in 2021?’. Of course, our P&C are always looking for new and existing parents and carers to volunteer in numerous ways during the year, including our second-hand uniform shop. If you would like to volunteer some time to support our school and of course meet some other parents and carers, contact our friendly administration team or the P&C directly. Meet the Teacher evenings have been reimagined to ensure parents and carers have the opportunity to ‘meet’ their child/rens’ teacher. Sessions will be run next week, Week 3. More information will be provided soon. We hope you can join us to meet your child’s teacher and find out about the enriching and engaging learning experiences we have planned this year! As you know, school improvement for our kids is the highest priority at Summer Hill, which includes providing a safe, innovative and engaging environment for students, families and staff. Two recent additions to our school grounds include a child safety gate at our Moonbie Street entrance. This gate was installed to support a safe environment for our students attending 3Bridges after school care. The gate will be in use from 3.15pm to 6pm each school day. Also, our multicourt is now complete, with the addition of shade sails. Thank you again to our generous community for your financial support for such a welcome addition to our school. Thank you for taking the time to read about what’s happening at Summer Hill Public School, we are very excited to report what our students have been doing. Olivia Budd (Class Teacher and Maths) Kindergarten Llama (M,T,W) Kindergarten is a wonderful year to teach! I love watching the students grow in confidence and it is incredible how much they learn throughout the year.

2021 is shaping up to be a wonderful year of excitement and learning for our new Stage 1 students! It's full steam ahead for all concerned and our days are already full of engaging learning experiences across all curriculum areas. All classes have now established their classroom expectations, structures and routines. Further information on your child’s class will be provided at the Meet the Teacher Sessions which will occur in Week 3.

Mrs Katherine Butler (Assistant Principal ES1) Kindergarten Butler The best thing about teaching Kindergarten is being able to teach and build strong educational foundations for young minds. It is truly rewarding. I enjoy watching the Kindy children grow into well-rounded students who love to play, socialise and learn every day and I get to be a special part of that.

Ms Ingrid Johnson (Class Teacher) Kindergarten Tutu Kindergarten is such an exciting time. I love watching the children grow and develop their confidence over the year and the fun they bring to the classroom.

Annette Pinhey (Class Teacher) Kindergarten Teresa I love guiding students to develop a really positive sense of themselves as lifelong learners. I love the opportunity to help students to develop their social skills in the school setting and to learn and use strategies to build relationships.

Emily Edwards (Class Teacher and EALD Teacher) Kindergarten Llama (Th,F) I love how much joy they find in everything.

Hi my name is Miss Juliana Ma and I am teaching Year 5 Karman. I have been teaching at Summer Hill Public School for 14 years and have loved every moment of it. I enjoy reading, art and swimming. I also like my morning coffee! I believe an effective classroom is one where there is a mutual and positive sense of respect and one that is filled with fun and educational activities.

My class name is from Tawakkol Karman - who won the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize "for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for wom-en's rights to full participation in peace-building work”. 5 Tobias

Hi! My name is (Ms) Trish Wylie. I will be teaching 5T this year. I have been teaching for many years, mostly in the inner west, but also interstate and overseas. I am looking forward to the year and getting to know your child.

He was recognised for his work in the field of private international law and in particular for his achievements establishing the Hague Conference on Private International Law. 5 Walesa

Hello, Summer Hill Public School. My name is (Miss) Sarah Weston and I am the Stage 3 Assistant Principal and Year 5 OC Classroom Teacher of 5 Walesa. Our classroom name relates to Lech Walesa, a Polish man, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983. Walesa was known for his efforts in organising a campaign that concerned the freedom of organisation in Poland.

Creating a positive learning environment, where students feel safe and valued is a priority of mine. In my role as an Assistant Principal, I am grateful to have the opportunity to take this positive culture beyond the four walls of my classroom. I believe in providing each student with the right amount of stretch in their learning, whilst instilling the values of resilience and perseverance. I look forward to extending the learning of students across the school, whilst making special memories along the way.
