Principal’s Message Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of St Joseph’s College, Welcome back to school for the final term of 2018. We concluded Term 3 with a beautiful graduation send off for our Year 12 students. I mentioned in my speech to those gathered at the Friday assembly that St Joey’s really does go above and beyond in the manner with which they send their seniors into the world. Our Mass on Thursday evening was special and thanks to Fr Michael for leading the Eucharistic celebration. Many thanks must also go to Mr Scott McDermott and Mr Guy Davoren for all their work in organising and running the graduation activities for our students. They were ably assisted by a large number of other staff so thank you to all those involved. We now see our Year 12 students focus on their HSC examinations, the first of these conducted last Thursday, and which run until the middle of November. Best of luck to our students who remain in our prayers and thoughts.

MURALS As a parting gift to the College, a number of Year 12 students spent up to four days in the holidays working with Ms Celia Pennay on a mural located on the eastern side of the Carroll block. All Year 12 students contributed financially to purchase the materials required. You can see the photos below. It is a really stunning piece of work and thank you to all involved. The students also painted a number of toilet doors with inspiring quotes in the hope that the small minority of students who feel it is OK to carry out acts of vandalism in these facilities will think twice about their actions.

HOLIDAY TRAVELS Those who follow our Facebook page would have seen through the holidays the posts involving our students who travelled to Vietnam for the annual immersion. Now in its seventh year, the event saw the largest number of students attend and was a thoroughly moving and worthwhile journey for every participant. I have had the opportunity to speak with a number of the safely returned students who attested to the value of the trip. Thanks must go to Mr Andrew Chambers, Ms Teneille DeLuca and Ms Anna Borgia who gave up 11 days of their break to lead the students on the tour and for all the time committed to organising the trip. We also had a number of students attend the annual Ignite Conference in Brisbane during the first weekend of the holidays. This annual gathering provides the over 1500 attendees the chance to deepen their faith and connection to the living Christ as they are immersed in workshops, praise and worship, reconciliation, great messages from speakers, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Mass. Thank you to Mr Michael Tod and our YMOs, Grace Hinchliffe and Cameron O’Toole for leading our students.

STAFFING We welcome back a number of staff this term who have been on extended leave. Mrs Carrianne Scott returns from maternity leave after the birth of the gorgeous Billie. Ms Charmaine Vella-Fox has just returned from a term’s long service leave during which she and her family explored the wonders of Europe. Welcome back Carrie and Charmaine. Also, at the start of this term we welcomed Mr Gerard Ritchie who joins the TAS and CAPA learning areas for the remainder of the year. Gerard did spend a term with us in 2017 so in a way, welcome back Gerard.

CAR PARKING I ask that parents and carers please take note of signs indicating that car parks on the eastern side of the allocated area are assigned to staff members. All visitors to the College should be parking in the western car park (the entry to which is immediately after you turn into the school grounds). When a staff park is taken by someone not assigned to that area, it can often cause a ripple effect disruption. I thank you for your understanding with this matter.

ADDITIONS IN THE HOLIDAYS Thanks to Mr Steve Joyce, our Plant Manager (St James and St Joseph’s), who has coordinated a number of continued improvements over the holidays including the completion of the installation of air conditioning, more painting to our classrooms in the Swannbeck Building, external touch up painting, and with the aid of the rest of the maintenance team, the continued improvement and repair of school buildings and infrastructure. We are currently gathering quotes to resurface a number of classrooms that have not had new flooring since their initial build, for some, 26 years ago. We also had an additional number of CCTV cameras installed around the College after some unfortunate vandalism during Term 3. Please note that all cameras installed are movement sensitive and if there is a need to review footage of events that may have occurred on the College grounds, this will be done.

SJC SCHOOLTV RESOURCE A reminder that this is a free resource for SJC families. There is a wide variety of topics available to help parents and carers support their children. We are also slowly building a resource page called Parent Hub where you will find additional information and links. This includes all the resources shared by Kirra Pendergast following her Safe on Social presentation. I suggest you take some time to go through these resources, particularly given some recent events that have been brought to the College’s attention. A number of reports have come through regarding students being groomed online with their information gathered and then perpetrators attempting to blackmail the students. These incidents occurred quickly and without the trusting relationships between parents and child that existed, the outcomes could have been far more serious. The Office of the eSafety Commissioner contains a wealth of information. Again, welcome back to Term 4 and we look forward to a fantastic final nine weeks of the year. LEAVING ST JOSEPH’S COLLEGE During the second semester of a school year, families tend to make decisions about moving to a new area because of employment changes, etc. We ask that all parents of students who will not be returning to St Joseph’s College in 2019, to send in a letter confirming when the student will be leaving and the new school or institution he/she will be attending. RIDING TO SCHOOL? PLEASE GIVE WAY TO PEDESTRIANS

Many pedestrians in the local area are elderly and are easily intimidated by cyclists who don’t

give way to pedestrians. We ask that parents talk to their children about the correct way to pass a pedestrian on a pathway. In practice this means slowing to a safe speed, sounding your bell if approaching from behind and leaving plenty of space for passing. In addition, when using pedestrian crossings, the bike should be walked across the road, not ridden across.

SCHOOL UNIFORM Thank you to those students (and their families) who took the opportunity of the school holidays to attend to issues relating to school uniform and standard of appearance. There are still some issues that need attention with regards to hair (anything over the shirt collar needs to be tied back), no make-up for girls and attending to personal grooming (shaving) for boys. DEBATING On Tuesday 11 September, Xavier Catholic College Skennars Head hosted the annual Catholic Secondary Schools Association (CSSA) Debating competition, where the College entered a Year 7 and Year 8 team to compete on the day. Students from both teams debated on a range of topics from celebrities and their influence on teenagers, the impact of teachers and parents on a student's learning and the little things in life. All the students represented themselves and the College with pride and should be congratulated on their diligence and organisation in the lead up to the competition. Special congratulations to our Year 7 team consisting of Seana Connolly, Willow Trimboli, Christine Brotherton and Valentina Muccillo who won two of their three debates on the day. CONSTRUCTION UPDATE Last term the Year 12 Construction class laid a concrete slab to complete some of their competencies. After the initial preparation, forming up and laying the reinforcing the excitement of working the wet concrete to produce a finished product showed and all involved had a good time while learning and doing the necessary tasks to achieve a good end result. PEDAGOGY

The Importance of Setting Goals Every year students are encouraged to set goals for the year. But we don’t always explain why setting goals is important. Research has shown that people who set goals (and use them effectively) not only perform better, but suffer from less stress and anxiety and are happier and more satisfied with life. In 1953 a Harvard University study showed that 3% of the students graduating that year wrote down their specific career goals. Twenty years later, a team of researchers interviewed the class and found that the 3% who had written down their goals were not only happier, but were worth more financially than the other 97% combined. Here are some more reasons why you might like to set some goals for the year:

Setting goals gets you to think about possibilities.

Goals give you a direction to work towards.

Goals give you a clear picture of where you want to go.

Goals help you to push yourself just that little bit more.

Goals help you have a more fun and fulfilled life.

Goals can give you motivation and focus.

Setting goals helps you do all the things you want to do in life!

You have probably set many goals already without even realising it – not every goal has to be written down but it certainly helps you to stay on track if you do write it out. You can set goals for all the different aspects of your life. Remember, if you don’t set goals you’ll find that life just sort of ‘happens’ to you rather than you actually deciding what you want out of life then making what you really want happen! So get in the driver’s seat of your life and take control with your goals this year. NSW COMBINE CATHOLIC COLLEGES (CCC)

STATE ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS Three of our students, Olivia Millett (9D), Kyle Scott (7C) and Willow Trimboli (7C), travelled to Sydney towards the end of last term to compete in the NSW Combine Catholic Colleges (CCC) State Athletics Championships. All three students qualified in multiple events and each achieved top 10 placings in at least one event which is a fantastic achievement against the best track and field athletes in NSW. Particular congratulations to Olivia (2nd in the Girls 15 Year Olds 100 Meter) and Kyle (3nd in the Boys 12 Year Olds Shot Put). Mr Carlo Trimboli

Vietnam Immersion

RRISK is a health promotion program that addresses risk-taking behaviour amongst Year 11 students in the North Coast of NSW.

RRISK is a health promotion program that addresses risk-taking behaviour amongst Year 11 students in the North Coast of NSW. First developed in 1999, the RRISK program has grown rapidly in response to demand, initially involving 300 students from 9 high schools and now attracting over 4900 students from 58 schools across northern NSW from Tweed Heads to Port Macquarie.

Adolescent risk taking associated with alcohol, drugs, driving and celebrating results in unacceptably high levels of injury and trauma. Young people are over-represented in every category of risk-taking behaviour resulting in injury.

RRISK is a resilience building program that is relevant to the social life, developmental stage and concerns of adolescents. It extends the school based drug education and road safety curriculum by providing opportunities for senior high school students to develop knowledge, attitudes and skills to reduce risk taking and develop safer celebrating strategies. The program includes a well-designed, multi-strategic seminar day, preceded and followed by a range of in-school activities. It incorporates factual presentations on risk taking, alcohol, drugs, safe celebrating, safe driving and vehicle safety and is enlivened by drama, life stories and role models. Student-led activities include peer-facilitated small groups which incorporate elements of the Red Cross “Save-a-Mate” program. Over 350 Peer Facilitators are trained to demonstrate to their classmates how to physically help a friend who may have collapsed and what to do in an emergency. A crash scenario involving students, police, ambulance and emergency services, is one of the highlights of the RRISK Seminars. Over the years, the seminars have been supported by community meetings, newsletter inserts, art competitions and professional learning sessions for health professionals, teachers and community workers. RRISK includes keynote presenters from Drug and Alcohol Research & Training Australia and the NSW Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority).

RRISK not only educates young people about road risks but helps them adopt safer behaviours by providing them with practical skills and strategies to manage risks across many aspects of their social lives by addressing binge drinking and drug use, safe partying and encouraging them to look after their friends.

RRISK is successful because of its relevance to young people. It complements the school curriculum; is considered core business by partners; is well supported by peak organisations; and receives excellent media coverage. Evaluations have been published in peer-reviewed journals and the program has been a finalist in the National Drug and Alcohol Awards and winner of the North Coast Area Health Service Excellence Award and Excellence in Road Safety Award.
