Principal’s Report Uniform Shop Changes Please be advised that as of 30th September the management of the Uniform Shop has been passed over from the P&C to the school. For most parents and students there will be no visible change. Mae will continue to manage the shop, prices will remain the same, products will be unchanged and the shop will still be open on Monday and Wednesday from 9am-2pm. The only difference parents will initially notice is that payments made via eftpos will show Concord High as the supplier. Farewell to the Class of 2019 This Wednesday 25th September marks the last day of formal lessons for Year 12. Thursday 26th September will be the Year 12 Graduation Evening commencing at 6pm in the school hall. This special event celebrates the completion of 13 years of schooling for our Year 12 graduates, it is one of the highlights of our annual school calendar. We look forward to all students in Year 12 and their families joining us to share in this success. All students in Year 12 have been reminded that the completion of school does not place them outside of the Department of Education’s Suspension and Expulsion procedures, nor does it place them outside the reaches of the law. Students breaching our school expectations around behaviour, damage to school property, or anti-social behaviour of any type in these final days will be dealt with according to normal school policy. The Higher School Certificate examinations will commence on Thursday 17th October. Significant academic progress can still be made in this final 4 week window. I would encourage all students to find a healthy mix of study, recreation and relaxation over this period of time. The full resources of the school are available to all students and their families that may require additional support during this potentially challenging period of time. This includes the Welfare Team, School Counsellors, School Nurse and Teaching Staff. On behalf of all teaching and administration staff, I would like to wish our Year 12 cohort every happiness and success for life beyond Concord High School. Until Next Fortnight Victor Newby Principal

Leaning Kimono with the Grand Master On Thursday, September 18th, Japanese language students from Years 9 and 12 attended the “Kimono Master Incursion” led by Kyoko Sensei, a Grand Kimono Master. Kyoko Sensei spent three years studying Kimono full-time to become a Master and is the first to teach Kimono outside of Japan. Firstly, Sensei introduced a variety of Kimono: Uchikake, worn as a kind of coat over a bride’s Kimono, Tomesode, a formal Kimono worn by married woman attending wedding, and Komon, a more casual Kimono that may be worn around town.

(From left to right: Uchikake, Tomesode, Komon)

Then Seisei demonstrated Kitsuke (putting on), using Anna Dey in Year 9 as a model. The Kimono Anna is wearing is called Furisodo (swinging sleeves), a formal style of Kimono worn exclusively by young, unmarried women. The process of putting on Kimono is very complicated because there are lot of layers and strings. It took about 40 minutes for Kyoko Sensei to finish Kituske on Anna. Here are some beautiful photos to show some of the steps:

After the demonstration, Kyoko Sensei wished all the best to our Year 12 students and encouraged all the students to continue learning Japanese. She reminded us that learning a second language can be a precious treasure, it can enhance our opportunities to work and travel and can enrich our lives. This is definitely true. The Kimono incursion was fun and educational and gave students the chance to appreciate the Japanese culture up close. This experience would not have been possible without the help and organisation of Ms Giles, a close friend of Kyoto Sensei. Ms Giles lived in Japan for many years and has made invaluable contributions to the Japanese program at Concord High School. On behalf of the language faculty, I would like to thank her for her enthusiastic dedication to enriching the learning of our students. Hopefully this experience will trigger students’ interests in exploring more aspects of the Japanese culture and language. Ms H Yuan Japanese Teacher

Wellbeing News Dear Parents and Students, Just a reminder, we will be holding free dental and eye examinations from Monday 14th – Friday 18th October. For those who have chosen to participate, your child will be notified of their appointment time a day prior and a report of the examination will be sent home for your records thereafter. If you have any queries or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me by [email protected] Ms L Bechara (School Nurse) Mental Health Public Speaking On Thursday 5th September a group of four Year 9 Concord High School students travelled to St. Ursula’s College in Kingsgrove to compete in the Mental Health Public Speaking Challenge. The Mental Health Public Speaking Challenge is a public speaking event that aims to promote a greater understanding and awareness of mental health and well-being, a reduction of stigma around those issues and the promotion of help seeking in regards to mental health. The competition involves an 8-9 minute research-based speech delivered by a team of 3 students and encourages the creative use of stage space and presentation, with the ability to use multiple voices, props and performance elements, among other inventive ideas. Neva Mikulic, Sienna Davison, Sam Chesterton and team adviser Elijah Ross represented the school with pride in presenting their topic about the ways in which adolescent sleep routines and sleep deprivation can affect mental health. With a unique approach to using stage space, props and role play, the team did an outstanding job in finishing as Runners-Up for the competition amidst some strong competition from local selective, private and comprehensive schools. These students should be commended for their effort and performance in this competition, as well as their dedication to spreading awareness and starting important discussions around the mental health of young people. Well done Neva, Sienna, Sam and Elijah!

Wellbeing News continued Drug and Alcohol Initiative We want our students to lead happy and healthy lives but some young people use drugs and alcohol to manage issues that they are experiencing. Statistics tell us that this is true of young people from schools in all sectors (private, Catholic and State) as well as in all areas within Australia. In an attempt to prevent students falling into this situation, Concord High has volunteered to be part of a Department of Education pilot initiative around drug and alcohol education within schools. In partnership with Youth off the Streets, all students at Concord High have had an initial talk about drugs and alcohol, the harmful effects of their use and the avenues for support that are available. On Wednesday night this week, the Youth off the Streets team working with our school led a seminar around this topic for parents. A hardy group braved the torrential rain to join in a positive discussion about starting and continuing conversations with your own young people about drugs and alcohol. The main theme from the evening was about being willing to speak to your teenager in a non-confrontational way (while washing up, doing the gardening or sitting side by side during a drive as examples), being non-judgemental in approach but assisting them to find sources of support. One of the main supports is through the school. Our School Counsellor and Wellbeing team are well set up to assist students in accessing the right contacts or being referred through to external services. There will be updates as we move further into this program and we encourage the Concord High community to join with the school in the work that lies ahead.

Year 12 2019 Important Information

Dear Year 12 Parent / Caregiver,

As we begin to approach the end of formal lessons for students in Year 12, I would like to take this opportunity to provide you with some important information regarding the schools expectations and upcoming events.

General Expectations

All students and families are reminded that Year 12 are expected to conduct themselves maturely and responsibly over their final weeks at Concord High. Being at the end of formal secondary schooling does not exempt students from the Department of Education’s Suspension and Expulsion procedures. Students who breach the school discipline code, particularly in the areas of damage to school property, disruption to school normal operations, and disrespectful behaviour towards other members of the school community may be asked to complete their HSC examinations at another venue.

Students are also reminded that behaviour over this period of time does not exempt them from the law. This is particularly relevant to the safe operation of motor vehicles, property damage, and violent or aggressive behaviour. Students who engage in illegal or unlawful conduct will be referred to the police by the school.

Formal Lessons

With the completion of the Trial HSC examinations, most students should have now received their results, together with feedback from class teachers. The next 4 weeks is a critical period where ongoing, regular attendance at school is extremely important. Some classes will still be completing content, others will be completing revision, practice exams, refining examination technique and receiving vital feedback from class teachers. Formal lessons will continue up to and including Wednesday 25th September.

Dress Up Week

In keeping with Concord High tradition, the final five school days will provide Year 12 students with an opportunity to attend school following a “dress up” theme each day. Normal lessons will continue during this time and attendance is expected from all students whether they take choose to dress up or not. The dress up days are Wednesday 18th September to Tuesday 24th September inclusive.

Student/Staff Soccer Match

On Friday 20th September, the school will host a staff/student soccer game on St Lukes Oval. Normal lessons will be suspended from lunch onwards to allow students and staff to participate and the remainder of the school to spectate.

Farewell Assembly

On Wednesday 25th September all students in Year 12 will return to full school uniform for the school Farewell Assembly. This assembly allows the student body to acknowledge the graduating students on their final day of school attendance.

Page 18: Principal’s Report...The Festival caters for school aged concert, brass, and big bands, string ensembles and orchestras of all ability levels, from beginners to Australia’s most

Year 12 Important Information

Graduation Ceremony – Families On Thursday 26th September the school will host the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony. This is a major event on the school calendar and will provide the opportunity for staff and families to farewell the Class of 2019. The ceremony will commence at 6:00pm in the Concord High School Hall. All graduates are expected to be in full school uniform.

HSC Exams

The HSC written exams will commence on Thursday 17th October 2019 and conclude on Monday 11th November. All Year 12 students are responsible to ensure they know when their exams are scheduled and that exam rules are followed. More detailed information will be provided closer to the exams.

Sign Out Day

All students in Year 12 are required to complete the sign out process to officially leave school. Sign out day will be Tuesday 12th November from 8:30am – 10am in the Concord High School Hall. All students are to ensure that all school fees are paid and that all school resources are returned on or prior to this date.

Students who fail to complete the sign out process will not be eligible to attend any school supported events including Presentation Day and Year 12 Formal.

Year 12 Formal

The Formal will be held on Tuesday 12th November at Dockside, Darling Harbour from 6pm – 10.30pm. All families are responsible for ensuring that arrangements are in place for supervision of students from 10:30pm on the night.

Concord High Presentation Night

Presentation Night is one of the highlights of the school calendar to be held on Wednesday 12th December. This is our schools opportunity to recognise our high achievers across all areas of school life. Students in Year 12 receiving awards will be acknowledged on this night.

Attached to this letter is a single “Dates to Remember” handout that hopefully all families will find helpful during this busy time of the year.

I would like to take the opportunity to wish all Year 12 students and their families a great finish to Term 3. Remember that the resources of the school (teaching, counselling, wellbeing, health support) remain available to all students over the coming months. I would encourage any families who may be experiencing difficulties over what can a stressful period to contact the school and access our support.

Kind regards, Victor Newby Principal
