Principal’s Report Welcome back to Term 2! Together we have achieved a lot over the last few months. Year 7 classes have kicked off the term with Trips to MOTAT. It has been wonder- ful to have parental help and support so that we can undertake these trips. These experiences will help your child develop their ideas and thinking within areas of study this term. Thank you. Last week we held our first school Umu! Thank you to the families who supported this great event, despite the poor weather! It was a great opportunity to come together to build relationships. We have more exciting events coming up this term, including our Campus Fia Fia, Matariki Celebrations and Art Week where we live, breathe and create art. (If you would like to be involved in taking a small group as part of our Art Week, we would love to hear from you!) Reading Together has kicked off and Production practices with our talented cast are now underway… Special congratulations to Sylvia McDougall who placed second nationally in the Young NZ Writers Intermediate competition and has been selected to have her story ‘Sibling Rivalry’ as part of the Beyond The Backyard anthology to be published and launched on June 2nd 2017 in Taupo. With so many high-quality entries, this is a wonderful achievement! Our Chess Teams triumphed in the recent Auckland Central Chess Federation Tournament, narrowly defeating St Cuthbert's College to win gold medals *and* qualify for the national championship in Christchurch later this year! Congratulations to Aydin Mustahib, Renae Ghadiali, Saasha Ghadiali, Sylvia McDougall and Celia Chanwong who were in the winning Team. Our school was ably supported by all 16 players competing, every win serving to knock down opposing team scores. Our Team also placed first and second last week in the Auckland Central South Intermediate Competition with our school picking up the top seven individual placing’s! A great team effort with both of these fantastic results. Special thanks and acknowledgement of the talent and work of Mr Wayne McDougall who is our amazing Coach and enthusiastic Chess advocate! We are very excited to be adding in an ‘Effort’ grade to our Reports, which will go home later this term. Effort is what ignites ability and turns it into accomplish- ment. Effort can be demonstrated through taking on challenges, learning from mistakes, seeking and applying feedback, practicing and applying strategies, perseverance, asking questions and taking risks in learning. As a school we are seeking to foster and encourage these mindsets that have such a positive effect on progress. Cont/... Welcome back to Term 2! Together we have achieved a lot over the last few months.

Year 7 classes have kicked off the term with Trips to MOTAT. It has been wonder-ful to have parental help and support so that we can undertake these trips.

Safety at the School Gate Programme

This term, the Mt Roskill School Cluster (Mt Roskill Primary, Intermediate and Grammar) is participating in Auckland Transport’s, Safety at the School Gate programme. Safety at the School Gate is helping to improve safety as well as traffic flow around schools. Parking officers are on patrol outside your child’s school this term to observe non-compliant behaviour and issue infringement tickets to those who are not complying with the rules. The agreed approach is “zero tolerance. Stopping even momentarily to drop off passengers can compromise children’s safety. You will get a ticket if you are double parked, parked on yellow lines, or over someone’s driveway — as well as other vehicle safety offenses. Please park appropriately to keep our children safe and to avoid being ticketed. Thank you for your cooperation.

School Reports:

During 2017 each student will receive two full written reports. The reporting opportunities are:

Term 2 Full Written Report, Parent /Teacher Interview Term 3 Oral Reporting - Parent or Teacher request Term 4 Full Written Report. Interview if required

School Costs:

The Board of Trustees has endeavoured to keep the school costs as low as possible. We are only able to keep the School Donation ($75.00) and Specialist Fee ($50.00) at this level because of the support of our community.

This year we will be sending out a request for the donation and specialisation fees each term. The total cost for the year will be $125.00. If you have difficulty meeting the total costs at the beginning of the year, please contact the office and individual arrangements will be made. Payments can be made monthly throughout the year and receipts are issued each time. We welcome payments (or part payments) direct into our bank account—12 3043 0245466 00. Any payment must show — child’s name, room number and a brief description (i.e. Spec fees).

The School Donation helps meet the cost of providing sports and classroom equipment as well as maintenance and repairs to the equipment. The Specialist Fee helps to cover the cost of materials used in Specialist subjects where students keep the items made.

Sport update

This term has been a busy one with a number of students representing the school in Central Zone tournaments. So far they have taken part in Futsal, Rugby and Waterpolo.

Over the next two weeks we have teams playing in the Girls and Boys Football competition as well. All of our teams have performed very well so far, and it has been great to see the enthusiasm and sportsmanship shown by everyone.

As well as Central Zone competitions, we have teams competing in Friday night Waterpolo games as well as Saturday Netball. The students involved in these sports show tremendous commitment by consistently turning up for practices and games.

A very big thank you to the parents who regularly support the teams. Your help is much appreciated.

Alan Davies and Steph McCallum Sports Co-ordinators WERO Water Safety Programme

On Wednesday 17 May, 39 students were given the opportunity to take part in a water safety programme at the Wero Whitewater Park, Manukau City. They participated in activities that focused on water safety, teamwork, risk-taking and personal excellence. Before hitting the water students put on wetsuits, life jackets and helmets, followed by a comprehensive safety briefing.

Students experienced the power of water first hand when they had to do a river crossing. Although, the flow of the river looked quite slow the force of the water was extreme, knocking some off their feet.

Once in the boats, students learned how to paddle before rafting down a grade 2 river. However, the highlight of the day was undoubtedly the swimming down the rapids. Everyone had a fantastic day and thoroughly enjoyed this exciting adventure.

Piano and Keyboard Lessons

Learn to play the piano or keyboard at Mt Roskill Intermediate

Individual lessons are available after school and last for half an hour. The cost is $30.00 per lesson (one lesson per week).

For enquiries or bookings please ring: Mrs Glenda Gordon 817-3498

Reminders:

All visitors to the school must report to the Office. Interview appointments are to be booked through the office and not directly with the classroom teacher.

Absence / Absenteeism: Student absences should either be:-

A) telephoned to the office (620-8508) as early as possible by a parent, or B) emailed to [email protected] with your child’s name, room number and reason for your child’s absence, or, C) through the Mt Roskill Intermediate app. (information on page 2)

For your convenience there is an answer phone for those who need to ring when there would be no one in the office. Unexplained absences in excess of 2 days will be followed up by a senior staff member on behalf of the Board of Trustees.

Stationery: Stationery can be purchased from the school office before school each day.

Interruption to Programmes: Please be aware that students work to a tight timetable to fit in a balanced programme of learning in all New Zealand Curriculum areas. We prefer that you do not withdraw your child unnecessarily from school during the day — for example: for appointments, visits to relatives, meeting family at the airport, shopping, lunch or baby-sitting, etc.

School Carparks Parents, please do not drive into the school grounds to drop off children in the morning or when collecting them in the afternoon. The driveways get very congested and there is a strong possibility that a student could be injured. Please park in the street.

Bicycles Cycle helmets are compulsory and must be worn by students riding bicycles to and from school. Bicycles are locked in the cycle sheds each day. Cycle locks must be used for individual cycles. The Board of Trustees does not accept responsibility for bicycles and suggest that they are insured by the owners’ family.
