Sally Petersen – RIP I am very sorry to report that on 17 July, Sally Petersen, mother of Kierra Oates (Year 6, Wodonga) passed away unexpectedly. Sally’s funeral took place in Wodonga on 23 July and I was pleased to see a good number of Trinity students, parents and staff there to support Kierra and her family during this very sad time. I would ask all members of the Trinity community to keep Kierra and family in their thoughts and prayers.

Night of the Rising Stars – 3 August Next Friday, 3 August one of the great events on the College calendar, ‘Night of the Rising Stars’ will take place in the Multi-Purpose Hall from 7:00pm. In recent years, these performance evenings have been extraordinary and I am sure that next week’s event won’t disappoint! I would encourage as many students as possible, along with their families, to come along to an event they won’t forget!

An extraordinary amount of work goes into preparing nights like the ‘Night of the Rising Stars’. I acknowledge all of the hard work of those students involved, as well as the staff who have worked with them in preparing their performances. Good luck – or ‘break a leg’ to all involved with the next Friday’s performance evening! (Families $10, individual students $2).

Study Tour to Europe The College’s inaugural study tour to Europe occurred very successfully during the semester vacation. I have been greatly encouraged by the initial feedback I have received from students, staff and parents involved in the trip. I am hoping that once the term is up and running, we will have the opportunity to gather feedback from the participants and evaluate the trip thoroughly as we work through the process of determining the next international educational opportunity for Trinity students in the future.

This week, I received a letter from parents of students involved in the recent trip. The parents wrote:

‘… We are thrilled that the students were given this opportunity and the chance to embrace it to the fullest … We have seen benefits such as a clear increase in maturity, sense of responsibility, care and good judgement, even in this short time. Thank you to Trinity College for creating and taking the opportunity to educate and develop our children in a much broader sense … Following the success of this trip, we would hope and encourage Trinity … to continue to provide similar opportunities in the future’.

This letter was warmly received and certainly was a positive way to begin reviewing and evaluating the trip!

Once we have completed an evaluation and review process of this year’s trip, I will announce to students and parents when the next trip will occur.

Finally and importantly, I thank the three staff who made this year’s trip possible: Mr Peter O’Neill, Mrs Lorraine Willis and Mrs Sarah Bradbury! These three staff left their respective families for 17 days and effectively gave up their break to enable the trip to take place. I thank these colleagues for their generous support of this wonderful opportunity for our students!

Parents of Year 8 and Year 10 Students: Subject Information Evenings Welcome back to Term 3. It is great to see the students keen and ready to tackle the challenges that Term 3 has to offer. For Years 8 and 10, it is an exciting time as they move to take increased responsibility for their learning and select the subjects that they will study for the next two years. The Subject Information Evenings offer you and your child the opportunity to explore the subject options that are available. During these information sessions teachers experienced in the various subjects on offer will be available to answer any queries that you might have.

For Year 8, this is their first opportunity to choose subjects that reflect their interests and their capabilities. The Year 9 2013 Subject Information Evening is scheduled for Thursday 16 August, and will be held in the Multi-Purpose Hall from 7.00 pm.

Year 10 students are on the cusp of their final years at high school and this is a key opportunity for both parents and students to explore the various options that are available for students’ patterns of study. The teachers available for consultation are all very passionate about their subjects, and the discussions will be informed and lively. The Year 11 2013 Subject Information Evening is scheduled for Tuesday 6 August in the Multi-Purpose Hall from 7.00 pm.

I look forward to meeting many of you at one or other of these sessions.

Year 10 History News

Year 10 History Block 19 Bonegilla Excursion On Friday, 3 August, 1.00 – 2.30 pm, Year 10 students will visit Bonegilla as part of their studies on post-war migration. At Bonegilla they will be guided through the restored camps by former residents. This trip offers valuable insight into an event that changed Australian society and how our local area is very much connected to our national story. This excursion will also form the basis of their upcoming assessment task and any student who cannot attend must speak with their teacher beforehand. There is no cost, as it is covered under non-tuition fees and no permission note is needed as it is within the area of local excursion. If you or your child have any concerns please contact the relevant class teacher, Mr Fagan or Mrs Millan.

Vacation Care Report

Vacation Care this term was a huge success with all our students and staff having a wonderful time!!!

We had the opportunity to see the heart racing film, “Brave”; we then went on to make some gross and gooey flubber, what a hoot!! We travelled up to Beechworth for a tour through the Beechworth Gaol including looking in Ned Kelly’s cell which was very interesting and exciting. We then continued on to Yackandandah for a BBQ lunch and fun at the playground. Wednesday saw us scrambling at Scrambles and then working on our creative sides while making picture frames and doing rock art!!!

Thursday was an amazing day where we all dressed down in our pyjamas due to the cold weather and travelled to the Wodonga library where we made some wonderful

winter art creations. When we got back to school we had some delicious pancakes and had some movies and relaxed. Friday saw us all in prison when we went to the Wodonga police station. We got to listen to the siren and have a

tour of the entire police station and the magistrate’s court which was amazing!!! We finished the week with some duster hockey in the Multi Purpose Hall. We all had a wonderful time and can’t wait for the September holidays.

Year 12 University Applications University applications will open soon. VTAC open 9.00 am August 1. UAC opens early August. No definite date yet. I will run an application information evening for students and parents on Wednesday, 8 August from 6.00 pm – 7.00 pm, in Com Lab 1. I advise either getting in early with an application, before the Trial exams begin, or wait until after Trials. Early Entry Schemes also open around this time. Most require that you have completed your VTAC or UAC applications first.

Early Entry & Special Entry Early Entry Schemes vary in their details. Students need to check each university website for details. University Of Canberra: Open; online application. http://www.canberra.edu.au/principals-recommendation/home Special Entry Schemes (EAS & SEAS) allocate bonus points to your ATAR to compensate for educational disadvantage you may have suffered as a result of your personal circumstances.

Most schemes open at the same time as applications. For Victorian universities, you need to complete your application to VTAC first, then go back in to apply for SEAS (Special Entry Application Scheme). All Trinity Students will tick the SEAS “rural” category. Other students may apply under other categories that allow for financial hardship, disability, disruptive home situations etc. Read the SEAS categories carefully. If you are applying for SEAS in Victoria or EAS in New South Wales, please come to see me for a confidential interview, to ensure that you

The students are required to spend 35 mandatory hours each year working in restaurants, cafes, hotels and other catering and food service establishments. I would like to record Trinity College’s appreciation of the participating businesses; Adamshurst, The Grange, The SSA Club, Lutheran Aged Concern, Quality Hotel on Olive 579 Restaurant, The Tea & Coffee House and Soden’s. I would also like to thank the students and their parents for their reliability in getting their work placements organised.

Looking For A Trade Or A School Based Apprenticeship? Please read the following excerpt from a newsletter just received from one of the local employment centres. Please see Ms Widdicombe for further information.

….If there are any students who are wishing to become Apprentice Chefs then I strongly encourage them to send through a copy of their resume, along with a brief covering letter, to [email protected] There is a major candidate shortage, and we are constantly talking to employers who cannot find suitable 1st Year Apprentices. We have employers who will be looking to commence 1st Year Apprentices later this year (from October onwards)…… With the economy slowing in recent weeks we are being approached by out-of-trade apprentices who have been put off by employers in the building and construction trades, whereas there are simply not enough 2nd, 3rd and 4th Year Apprentice

Chefs out there to fill the demand! …..there are great opportunities in trades such as Heavy Vehicle Mechanics, and some of the metal trades where we struggle to get suitable candidates. Heavy Vehicle is another great area – it’s a major skills shortage, and employers are now advertising out of the region to fill jobs for qualified staff.

I encourage students who are considering trades as a career to keep in touch with me. Any students interested in a School Based Traineeship or Apprenticeship should also be talking to Ms Widdicombe now, to ensure that a suitable employer is found ready to start in Year 11.

Trial a Trade Trial-a-Trade on Open Day provides a unique, hands-on experience, introducing students to the working life of a chef, patissier, or confectioner. There are two sessions available for each course, but hurry, because places won't last long! Cost: FREE but participants must register.

Motor Sport – Bronson in the USA! July 4 was a significant day, for not only the Americans celebrating Independence Day, but for Bronson Butcher Motorsport, as Bronson touched down in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, from his home town of Holbrook, Australia (population 1400).

Greeted by 39 degree weather, the recently turned 19 year old made his sixth visit to the US, this time with a three year visa and no return ticket. The process to get here after

finishing school last November was a protracted one, but with the support of many good people on both sides of the Pacific, and the guidance of E and M Mayock Immigration Attorneys of San Francisco, it was worth the wait as the three year visa was a greater term than expected and enables the team to make longer term plans.

Bronson Butcher Yr 12 Trinity Student, 2011

Page 11 Newsletter Week 1, Term 3, Week Ending 27 July 2012

There is still some red tape to get through as he gets settled in. “Being a non-citizen” Bronson explains "It can be difficult to deal with some departments as they don’t recognize overseas documentation or experience, such as a driver’s license and insurances.”

Bronson has hit the ground running, working with Gallagher Motorsport, who run Spencer Gallagher in the ARCA series and is headed up by TJ Clark, who has been a mentor for Bronson in the US since racing legend cars with his team in Las Vegas on previous visits. ARCA is a major national series which serves as a feeder to the Nascar category, and the team has had a major step up mid-season with Spencer piloting the #23 to three top 10’s in the previous three outings. "I went with the team to Chicago this weekend and Spencer was looking good for a top five before engine problems brought about an early exit."

"In the coming months I'll be looking at getting some seat time in a late model stock car with the team, however sponsorship must still be secured before I am able to race" Bronson said. "We are also looking forward to establishing a few other cool ideas in the near future."
