Principal’s Message
Quality Education in a Stimulating Environment
Dear parents and carers
Engadine Zone PSSA Athletics Carnival
A windy day saw our 53 athletes enthusiastically compete to be winners of the zone competition this year. Thanks to Mr Field, Mrs Weppler and Mr Edwards for their efforts not only in accompanying the students, but helping to run the event at Sylvania athletics track. Congratulations to our students who were once again excellent repre-sentatives of our school. Sutherland Shire Schools Music Festival
Sickness
As a principal I can not remember a school term with so much sickness throughout our school community. Stu-dents sick. Parents sick. Teachers sick. Teacher’s children sick. To limit the spreading of any unwelcome bugs PLEASE DO NOT send your child to school if they are unwell. Premier’s Spelling Bee
The Stage 2 and Stage 3 finals have been held and I am pleased to announce that the following students will be our spelling representatives at the next level of competition on Monday 4 September 2017 at Illawong PS: Stage 2: Jamie-Lynn Mc and Xanthya L Stage 3: Keira D and Selena X Good luck to these top spellers. Staff Professional Learning
On Monday afternoon teachers remained at school for an extended professional learning session on writing. The focus on writing has been an extended one in efforts to raise the quality of student writing as they move through the school and prepare for the rigours of high school. This preparation begins in Kindergarten. Mr Griggs and Mr Hogan prepared and presented the session. We looked at NAPLAN and how pieces of writing are marked and reviewed writing tasks which had been done in classrooms. It was a very productive afternoon of adult learning.

Our junior dancers were out of this world and our choralists sang like professional singers on stage last night at the music festival. I did also notice a couple of taller choir members enjoying the singing on stage as well. Thankyou to Miss Matheson and Mrs Teal for teaching the choir and to Miss McPherson for managing the junior dancers. The Groove Nation choreography was spot on too. All the best to our senior choir, senior dance troupe and band who will perform at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre tomorrow night.
Principal’s Report cont’d Signs on the School Gates
At all times during the school day the gates are to be kept shut to ensure the safety of students. I appreciate your co-operation and support with ensuring you close a gate behind you, and if you see a gate open, please close it. Sue Roach Principal
Deputy Principal’s Report
Congratulations to our 2017 Athletics Carnival
age champions!
NAPLAN News The 2017 NAPLAN results will be sent home with students on Monday 21 August (Week 6). Next week our Year 3 and 5 students will have the fun challenge of testing the school’s and the department’s NAPLAN online website. In what is purely a technical capacity trial, our school will be utilising all 240 Year 3 and 5 students as alpha testers. Their mission is to man our school's computers to test our capacity to host any future online NAPLAN tests. We hope that the students can push our system to near breaking point! It will be a stress free time for the students to revisit NAPLAN. No marks are possible. No students’ names will be recorded. No scores are possible. In fact, no one gets anything but the chance to break our system. If they can! It is a technical test for our students to push the online system’s capability.
There’s a lot more information on the department’s NAPLAN online website: https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-andlearning/student-assessment/naplan-online Jason Wilkins Deputy Principal

On Wednesday 16 August 2017, Kirk N (5/6F), Sophie E (6W), Lucy V (5L) and Ryan B (5/6F) represented Engadine West PS at the annual ANSTO Coding Gala Day. The goal for the day was to create a program using the coding platform ‘Scratch’, related to the theme ‘Healthy Living’.

ANSTO Coding Gala Day
Our students were in a tough competition! Both the Year 5 and Year 6 teams were outstanding in their ability to collaborate on their projects. The coding skills they possess, which enabled them to turn their ideas into a computer game, means they are well on their way to earning a place in a society where, by 2030, more than 50% of jobs will require a high level of coding.
The 4Cs: Creativity, Communication, Collaboration and Critical Thinking, are the skills at the forefront of 21st century learning. The ANSTO coding gala day provided our students with the opportunity to use all of these skills on a project that was both engaging and relevant to the students’ lives.

You will require a WWCC (Working With Children Check) and a sense of humour! A normal rostered day is from drop off until approximately 3.00pm once a month, however, if you are only available once a term or for a few hours in the morning or afternoon, please call into the canteen to see me. Fresh for Kids healthy eating competition
The Fresh for Kids healthy eating competition runs from 28 August until the end of September 2017. Students will receive a sticker when they purchase fruit or vegetables from the canteen. Collect two stickers, fill out the entry form and return it to the canteen. For every form returned, students will receive a keyring. There are seven to collect! Healthy Bones Week

Trivia Night Update
Saturday 16 September 2017 7.00pm at Engadine RSL
Thankyou for the great response to our upcoming Trivia Night. We are pleased to announce that all tables are booked, it’s a SELL OUT! There are a few seats left on the canteen table, so if you would like to come along, be sure to let us know. To those who have booked a table, we need to receive payment as soon as possible please, in order to confirm your place. Thanks to those who have already paid and HUGE thanks to the wonderful table sponsors (there are still some tables that would love a sponsor!) We are still collecting prizes for the night, so if you could please think about asking your family, friends and work colleagues if they could help in anyway. Hampers, vouch-ers for goods or services, anything big or small will be appreciated. You can drop your items to the EWPS office, or contact Toni and Justine to arrange collection. This is our major fundraiser for 2017, so even if you can’t attend on the night, we would be grateful for any support. The questions are written, the games are being planned and the prizes are growing each day. We can’t wait for the night to arrive!
