A very special welcome to our new Kindergarten students and their families, and also to the new families and students who have joined us in Year 1 – Year 6 since the end of 2018. I hope you all had a safe, relaxing holiday break and managed to spend some quality family time together. We have dropped in numbers since the start of 2018, but have formed 11 classes with all students now in their 2019 class groups. In my travels around the school it has been really pleasing to see the students so settled and ready to learn. Our focus for the first few weeks will be, as always, on setting routines and establishing expectations for learning and behaviour. At the same time we will be developing social skills to build self-esteem and positive interactions and classroom practices. Thank you to all the parents who have ensured that the students are wearing full school uniform. They look smart and ready to learn, and it also creates pride in our school and a sense of unity and team spirit. Please remember that we are a no hat – sit in the shade school. Our policy is that all students wear a broad- brimmed school hat from Kindergarten to Year 6 – no exceptions. This term we will be running a whole school dance program which we have been able to implement at no cost to parents and families due to the generous support of our wonderful P&C. The P&C, in conjunction with the school, will be funding the program for all students K-6. The program will be run by the Footsteps Dance company, and will occur every Thursday of this term for all classes. The new Kindergarten students will join in Week 3 to allow them to settle in and develop classroom routines. Dance is an integral part of the Creative Arts curriculum which is one of the Key Learning Areas in NSW. Learning outcomes in Dance are prescribed for all students K-6 by the NSW Educational Standards Authority (NESA), and therefore are not an optional extra. The Dance outcomes form part of the curriculum just as the outcomes for Mathematics or Science and Technology do. For more information, visit the following website: footstepsdancecompany.com.au I would like to extend a welcome to a new member of our teaching staff – Mrs Cath McFadyen. Mrs McFadyen is an experienced classroom teacher who will be an asset to our team – both in terms of the experience she brings and the quality of her teaching practices. She will have responsibility for our 2/3 class. While on the subject of staff news, I’d like to take the opportunity to let everyone know that Mrs Krystle MacLaren was the successful candidate in the selection process for the position of Assistant Principal which was made vacant by the retirement of Mrs Dunlop last year. Congratulations to Mrs MacLaren who will be taking on a specialist executive role covering the school’s student learning and wellbeing support programs. As you would be aware, we are in the process of repairing / upgrading the retaining wall behind the school hall. I appreciate that this is causing some inconvenience for staff and parents, but all the changes in procedure that we are putting into place are related to the safety of our students, which will always be our number one priority.

Finally, if your contact details have changed over the holiday period, could you please let the office know as soon as possible so that we can update our records accordingly. We have had cause to contact parents for a number of reasons over the last few days, and it has become very concerning with the number of mobile and home phone numbers that have been disconnected or remain unanswered despite numerous attempts at contact.

I’m looking forward to meeting up with everyone soon.

Have a wonderful fortnight!

MRS LEIGH BADE

Welcome to Kindergarten 2019

We are very pleased with the great start our 32 Kindergarten

students have had this week. Last week they all attended school for

a short time to complete the Best Start Kindergarten Assessment.

The teachers have entered the results online and parents can

expect to receive an individual report describing what their child can

do in literacy and numeracy shortly. This report will also provide

families with ideas to further student’s learning at home.

All our Kindergarten students have quickly settled into school

routines and the teachers are very proud of them. They have visited

various places within the school and have been happily playing with

our senior students at recess and lunch. The senior ‘buddies’ have

done a fantastic job in assisting them and making them feel

comfortable in the playground. Most of Kindy are very excited to be

at school, however, some find the school day VERY tiring!

Student Leaders Investiture Assembly At the end of each year, our senior students go through a process of

selecting the student leaders for the following year. The students

who are nominated and voted in, then form a student parliament

which resembles Australia’s federal government parliament.

Lynwood Park annual school leader investiture assembly will be held

on Monday 11th February in our school hall.

Our school leaders for 2019 will be resented with their badges and

pledged to uphold the values of Lynwood Park. Students who were

elected as sports house captains and vice captains also received

their badges at this assembly.

school and by the Department of Education Home School

Liaison officers. Application must be made to the office for

students who will be taking long periods of leave such as

family holiday, family business, bereavement or other

reasons during school terms. If your child is absent for a

The Salvation Army provides help to people in need from all

cultures and religions in our community.

The Salvation Army’s main fundraising event is the Red Shield

Appeal Doorknock which will take place over the weekend of

SATURDAY 25 and SUNDAY 26 MAY 2019.

The Salvation Army is involved in many areas of the

community including youth at risk through drugs and alcohol,

homelessness, abused women and children, the elderly,

families in crisis, as well as being available in times of

disaster.

Please support this worthwhile cause that helps people in our

community in times of need.

Student Assistance

A family may have financial difficulty for a variety of reasons and may be unable to meet the costs for students to participate in school activities such as excursions or performances.

The school has funds to assist students and will help families to pay for expenses which may not be able to be met. All enquiries for student assistance are treated with confidentiality. The Student Assistance Scheme allows all children the opportunity to enjoy the wide array of experiences offered. Please talk to our office staff or make an appointment with the principal if you wish to seek assistance

Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a severe and sudden allergic reaction. It occurs

when a person is exposed to an allergen (such as a food or

insect bite). Although death is rare if the condition is managed

properly, an anaphylactic reaction always requires an

emergency response. Prompt treatment with injected

adrenaline (via an autoinjector) is required to halt progression

and can be lifesaving. Fortunately anaphylactic reactions are

usually preventable by implementing strategies for avoiding

allergens. Students who have allergic reactions to peanut

butter and peanut products require the administration of an

epipen or administration of an antihistamine if exposed to

peanut butter, peanuts or peanut products. We ask all parents

to assist us in keeping our school safe by NOT sending

peanut butter on lunches, and also not sending any nuts or

peanut products to school. Our canteen supports our policy

by keeping the canteen free from nut products.

All staff are trained in the emergency procedures required to

deal with an anaphylactic reaction and in the administration of

an epipen. We seek your co-operation in this matter.

School Contributions

$45 per student or $70 per family

We are fortunate to have an enthusiastic and committed staff at

Lynwood Park and, while they are keen to use the best

resources available our funding does not stretch as far as we

would like.

Parents are asked to make the voluntary contribution to assist

in purchasing resources for the students of Lynwood Park PS.

We do not ask parents to purchase a set of textbooks or

workbooks for student.

We provide the children with a complete set of exercise books

and book covers at no cost. Please note that this is the only

voluntary fee parents are asked to pay. Remember, payments

can be made online through the secure ‘Make a Payment’

facility on our school website. The note has been sent home or

a copy can be found on our school website.

STREET PARKING/ PICKUP AND DROP OFF

Please park in the appropriate street spaces along Turner and

Frederick Streets. Take note of and comply with the ‘’no stopping’’

and ‘’bus zone’’ areas near the school and keep our neighbours

driveways clear. The area at the end of Turner St near our school

gate is a ‘’kiss and drop’’ zone. Please ensure that you do not park

in the turn around area of this zone. The police and rangers patrol

around the school regularly. Fines can be quite expensive for

parking illegally around a school.

MORNING ARRIVAL TIME

Supervision of students before school begins at 8.30am. There is

no adult supervision before 8.30am and we are unable to ensure

the safety of children in the playground. School gates will be

opened at 8.25am. A note will be sent home to parents of

students who are arriving at school too early. Please remind your

child to wait sensibly at the gate if they arrive before it is opened.

We well understand that many parents have work commitments

which require them to leave early for work. The Camp Australia

Before and After School care service is provided from 7-8.30 am

every morning in our school hall for parents who work.

Camp Australia may be contacted on 1300 105 343 or through

their website www.campaustralia.com.au Alternatively, you may

be able to make arrangements with friends or neighbours for the

supervision of your children before school. Some families in the

school with working parents take turns to bring each other's

children to school so they arrive between 8.30 - 9am.

Early pick up of Students

Parents/Caregivers wanting to pick up students prior to the 3pm

bell must sign their children out at the front office before

collecting students. Teachers will not allow students to leave the

classroom without an early leave note from the office.

This process is in place for the safety of our students.

Need to talk to Your Child’s Teacher

If you require time with your child’s teacher please make an ap-

pointment so that your child’s teacher can provide you with the

time to discuss issues with you. Under duty of care, teachers

cannot discuss issues with you whilst they are on class or walk-

ing their class to different venues around the school

P&C Second Hand Uniform Shop

The second hand uniform shop is open on Wednesday morn-

ings from 8:30 – 9:30am. It is located in the P&C demountable

on the top quad. Please contact the office if you have an

enquiry for Tanya.

EXCEL UNIFORM SHOP

The EXCEL uniform shop is open on Monday afternoons from

2.30 – 3.30pm and on Wednesday mornings from 8:30 –

9:30am. It is located in the P&C demountable on the top quad.

Orders may also be made online. Look on our school website

in the Our School tab under Parent Information.

Parent Online Payments

We have the facility to accept parent online payments for costs

associated with school. Go to the ‘’$ Make A Payment’’ link at

the top of the home page of our school’s website.

The payment process is intuitive and follows the format of

many other online payments that you may use every day. If our

school is requesting payment for a particular item, the note will

instruct you what to type in Payment Description, so it is

clear to our office staff what you are paying for when payments

made are downloaded each day.

An instruction document has been uploaded to our school

website on the Notes page for those parents who wish to

access this process. Parent Online Payments are also user

friendly on mobile devices. When parents click on the Parent

Online Payment webpage attached to the school’s website, via

a mobile device, they will be able to complete the online form

with ease.

Crunch and Sip

Is a 5 minute break at around 10am each morning to assist

the physical and mental performance and concentration of

students in the classroom. Students ‘re-fuel' with a small

snack of fruit or vegetables and water.

Each day students are asked to bring fresh fruit or salad

vegetables (only a small amount cut into bite size pieces

please!) to eat in the classroom at this time.

Pre-packaged tubs of fruit from the supermarket are

discouraged due to their very high sugar content. Dried

fruit is also not permitted as it tends to stick to the teeth

and increases the risk of tooth decay. ONLY

unflavoured water should be sent as the drink to accom-

pany the fruit. No other food or drinks are permitted for

Crunch and Sip.

Thank you for your support

Student Sporting Achievement

During the holidays, Liam Havron swam at the 2019 Open Water

Nationals in Adelaide, over the Australia Day long weekend. He

swam in some very tough conditions, and this was the first time

he competed in the 2.5km event in the ocean. In the warm up

swims, he was stung by some blue bottle stingers, but to his

credit he got back in the water to compete in the race.

The event was open to swimmers turning 12 to 16 years old.

Liam came 2nd in the 12 year old boys competition! A highlight for

Liam was that he got to meet the 2012 and 2016 Olympic

swimmer, Jarrod Poort.

Well done Liam, a great achievement!

Stage 3 Writing

Our wonderful Stage 3 students lost no time getting down to work

last week. For one of their first writing tasks, they were busy

writing letters to all our new kindergarten students – welcoming

them to our school and filling them in on all the exciting and

interesting things we do here at Lynwood Park Public School.
