Term 2 Week 3 14 May, 2019
Principal’s Message
I had the pleasure of accompanying our Year 6 students on the Canberra excursion last week. This is a wonderful experience for our students and the experience we all had was a testament to the nature of students here at Belair. Almost without fail, the presenters and guides at the various activities we participated in commented on the deep engagement and great behaviour of our students. The message below from one of our grandparents says it all.
NAPLAN Begins This week students in Years 3 and 5 commence their NAPLAN tests. Whilst this is an important tool for our school in judging the effectiveness of our instruction across several key areas of learning, it should never be something that places students under undue stress. Their success in life will never be determined by their NAPLAN scores. Whilst we do some preparation in the lead up to NAPLAN so students are aware of the testing format, we keep the process as low-key as possible. The best advice to students is “relax and enjoy showing your teachers how well they have taught you.”

Kinder Classroom Work Continues This week there will be some disruption to Kinder classes as rooms are being painted. The painters will keep disruption to a minimum by working across the weekend but a degree of shuffling students will be unavoidable. We are looking forward to freshly painted rooms with brand new pin boards everywhere. Kindergarten 2020 We are beginning to make contact with our kindergarten students of 2020. We would appreciate if any siblings of current students or neighbours could please contact the office to begin the enrolment process. Regards, Warwick Beard, Principal

Deputy Principal’s Message
Congratualtions to KA the assembly class at the K-2 assembly and to 4/5J the class of the week at the primary assembly last week.
ALARM PROJECT Stage 3
I have included a poster in this newsletter for students to reference when responding to a text using the ALARM matrix. The poster gives students prompts to think about when approaching a question to encourage higher order thinking through the various stages of the matrix.
Last Thursday, Year 5 and 6 teachers observed lessons at Kotara High School to gain a deeper understanding of how the ALARM matrix is used across the high school context. The idea around building these links is to ensure the same teaching strategies and language are used to develop the skills our senior students will require when writing across all key learning areas when transitioning to Year 7. The ALARM matrix is used as a writing and critical thinking tool in all learning areas from Year 7 through to Year 12 in all faculties at Kotara High School.
Feedback from KHS teachers has been very positive regarding Year 7 2019 entering with the ability to use the thinking matrix to deconstruct texts and write a written response. The Community of Schools believe this project is having a positive impact on student learning as they transition to high school.
Kind regards, Kathie Colley

Our own Lego Master in our School 2M have had their first lesson with our resident Lego Master Mr Lohs. The students learnt about the names of bricks, creating symmetrical patterns and shapes and linking bricks to form a huge Lego chain. Lego is about creating, patience and more patience. We are looking forward to Mr Lohs visiting in a fortnight and sharing more of his expertise with us and helping us create, design and make some incredible structures.

The first issue for this term has been sent home. Orders
are due by:
THURSDAY 15 MAY
The issue will be closed-off in LOOP after this date.
Book Club orders can only be placed via LOOP. Paper forms cannot be completed and placed at the
office. All orders earn resources for our school.
What is LOOP? LOOP is Scholastic Book Club’s “Linked Online Ordering & Payment” platform. This system allows parents to place and pay for their order without the need to return the
paper form to school. With LOOP you can pay using credit card and you can use any Scholastic vouchers.
LOOP includes a gift option so you can still request that your order is left at the office to be collected.
You can access LOOP either at www.scholastic.com.au/LOOP or via the app (download from the App Store or Google play).
If you have any problems using LOOP, Scholastic are more than happy to help out parents directly – call them on 1800 021 233.
