NAPLAN Online 2019
NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy – important skills that each child needs to succeed in school and life.
The NAPLAN tests are designed to help us make sure students are on track with their literacy and numeracy
development. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN tests for reading, writing, conventions of
language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. Yesterday our Year 3 and Year 5 students
participated in a 45 minute omnibus practice test online. This practice test provided students with an
opportunity to familiarise themselves with the test format and ways they will be required to answer
questions.
Between Tuesday 14th May and Friday 24th May our school will participate in NAPLAN Online. Students do
not need to be computer experts to take the NAPLAN test online. Making sure students have computer skills
is part of our school curriculum, and our teachers will ensure your child is familiar with the online format. To
see the types of questions and interactive features of NAPLAN Online, visit the public demonstration site.
If you have any questions about NAPLAN Online, please contact your child’s teacher.

In 2017 & 2018, there were many changes implemented at LPS in its effort embed a PBL culture within the school. With systems in place (matrix of expectations, permanent signage, a new mascot, rewards and behaviour notification forms aligned with PBL) teachers began the process of explicitly teaching the skills of what these expectations looked like. Bounce Back lessons were also programmed weekly to help improve student resilience. Since the implementation of PBL at the start of 2017 to date, we have seen a marked increase of positive rewards for all students and a decrease in the notification of negative behaviours. The 2018 ‘Tell Them From Me survey data’ demonstrated that there continues to be a positive and respectful relationship amongst the students, validating that LPS, at present, is better meeting the needs of student wellbeing and ensuring good conditions for their learning. LPS students display above state average in positive relationships, trust and making positive choices. Students also indicated that they have someone at school whom consistently provides encouragement and can be turned to for advice.
PBL @ LPS
LEARN ALWAYS PARTICIPATE SAFELY SHOW RESPECT
Let’s Celebrate! This week, LPS celebrates our journey of the Positive
Behaviour for Learning (PBL) initiative.
What is PBL? It is a comprehensive, integrated whole school approach to student well-being and behaviour. When working well, it is a process that helps create positive learning environments, and enables improved student learning, engagement and self-confidence. Why PBL? When students have trouble with reading, we teach. When students don't know their multiplication tables, we teach. When students struggle with expected behaviours, PBL gives us the tools to teach these behaviours. It has been implemented successfully in over 60 percent of Department of Education schools. The Wellbeing Framework for Schools outlines that the importance of positive relationships and feelings of belonging are essential for wellbeing. The school
environment is pivotal to the growth and development of children and therefore, all schools should strive for excellence in teaching and learning, connecting on many levels (cognitively, emotionally, socially, physically & spiritually), building trusting and respectful relationships with students in order for them to succeed. (Wellbeing Framework for Schools). Our school’s PBL and Bounce Back program addresses these important needs of all students.
Annual surveys
completed by our PBL
coach Susan Smith in
2017 & 2018 verified
that students and
teachers
demonstrated
improved awareness
of the school
expectations and an
increase in the giving
of positive rewards for all students.
In summary, the substantial changes of school culture that have come about as a result of the implementation of PBL and Bounce Back, have ensured that there is a more consistent whole school approach to student welfare at LPS. Students are demonstrating improved positive and respectful relationships with each other, their teachers and the community. Additionally, collaborative partnerships are being built with students, staff, families, communities and other organisations to support and develop the students and the broader community.
Looking forward, LPS is committed to building individual and collective wellbeing through a climate of care and positivity in both classroom and non-classroom settings. The employment of Ms Smith as our School Wellbeing Support Officer has also helped to support the social and emotional wellbeing of students through special programs and close liaison with the school’s Learning Support Team.
The PBL team wishes to thank all stakeholders for their commitment to the initiative and hope that this continues as we move forward on
our journey in building trusting and respectful relationships with the school and community.

LPS TECH REPORT TERM 1 WEEK 9
RoboCup Team
In week 6 this term a group of students commenced
learning about advanced robotics, with the intention of
entering in an Australian wide competition. The aim of this
competition is for students to design and build their own
robot that can complete a complex course and save a
stranded victim in a toxic chemical spill. The students will
need to program their robots using sensors to complete the
challenges of the course in a set time.
Minecraft Education Edition
Throughout 2018 and the start of 2019, LPS Tech club’s focus
was introducing Minecraft Education to 3-6 students. In total,
over 70 students learnt how to build, problem-solve,
collaborate and produce impressive structures using the
Minecraft platform. In semester one the students recreated
our school and designed a new playground. Semester two
students were faced with a few technical difficulties but
were still able to recreated significant Australian landmarks
on a map of Australia made from Minecraft blocks!
Well done everyone.
Tech club will be running from Week 10, Term 1 under the
guidance of Mrs McTackett with a wonderful new and
creative animation program. Stay tuned for some exciting
news and updates.

SchoolCommunity Charter
Collaborative. Respectful. Communication.
The following School Community Charter outlines the responsibilities of parents, carers, educators and school staff in NSW public schools to ensure our learning environments are collaborative, supportive and cohesive.
What our schools provideNSW public schools work to create positive environments for students, staff and the entire school community that support student learning. We strive to ensure that every student is known, valued and cared for.
The best education happens when parents and schools work together.
The School Community Charter aligns with the NSW Department of Education Strategic Plan 2018 – 2022.
Positive environmentsIt is important that our NSW public schools are positive environments and that parents and carers are kept informed of students’ progress and school announcements.
Parents and carers can expect:• to be welcomed into our schools
to work in partnership to promote student learning.
• communication from school staff will be timely, polite and informative.
• professional relationships with school staff are based on transparency, honesty and mutual respect.
• to be treated fairly. Tolerance and understanding are promoted as we respect diversity.W

Communicating with our schoolsOur staff will find a time to talk to you when they can give you their full attention. Please remember that while our staff are in class or dealing with other matters, they may not be available to answer your questions immediately.
Our schools and communities will make sure that written communication is appropriate, fair and easy to read. We encourage you to use email and social media appropriately to connect with your school and stay up-to-date with up-coming events in the school community.
Our guide for parents, carers and students provides useful information about the complaints process: education.nsw.gov.au/about-us/rights-and-accountability/complaints-compliments-and-suggestions/guide-for-parents-carers-and-students
Respectful communication is a rightIn all workplaces people have the right to feel respected. Unacceptable and offensive behaviour has no place in our school communities.
To ensure the wellbeing of students, staff and the community in our schools, steps will be taken to address unacceptable behaviour. This may include restricting contact with the school community or, in more serious cases, referral to NSW Police.
Unacceptable behaviour may include but is not limited to: • Aggressive or intimidating actions, such as violence, threatening gestures or physical proximity.• Aggressive or intimidating language, including the use of obscenities, making sexist, racist or
derogatory comments or using a rude tone.• Treating members of the school community differently due to aspects such as their religion or disability• Inappropriate and time wasting communication.
