Principal’s Message...several new staff to join our wolf pack family and you will learn more about...

Greetings Parents and Guardians, We had a great opening week and I am looking forward to a successful year. We have several new staff to join our wolf pack family and you will learn more about them in this edition of Wolf Tracks. You will also have chance to meet them at our Open House, September 18, 2013. I heartily welcome our incoming ninth graders and new students! Our freshman did a great job showing school spirit at our opening day assembly! Great job freshman! BHHS is proud of our students, staff and community and the character that exemplifies our P.A.C.K pillars of pride, academics character and kindness. We will continue to pursue excellence and success for every student as outlined in our district’s mission of Continuous Learning in a Caring, Engaging Environment. At BHHS, we encourage every student to develop the qualities that exemplify P.A.C.K Pillars of Pride in your school and community, high expectations for Academic achievement, and Character and Kindness that goes beyond the self to make a difference in the lives of others. Our staff continues to collaborate and set high expectations as we continuously look for ways to more effectively meet the needs of every single learner. It is our desire that every student be successful and we will do whatever we can to provide the support structures needed as we work together with parents and students to assist them in experiencing success at BHHS. Many of you are already familiar with our PACK time, but for those who are new, PACK time is a 30 minute time period within our school structured day for students to work on academics: homework, assignments, reading novels, working on projects etc. This “study time” allows “time” for interventions as well as “time” for every student to work on his/her studies. At the end of period 2, students have a 4 minute passing time before reporting back to their period 2 classroom. Those assigned a specific intervention are to report to their assigned location. We will begin the year with interventions in math, reading and writing and students identified will be assigned to a specific location for extra “targeted” support. At scheduled times throughout the year, different interventions and enrichment opportunities will be provided based on need. For example, as our AP exams draw closer in the spring, we may offer an intervention session that allows AP students time to meet on designated days during this second period “study” time so they can meet for additional study sessions. This week we are having class meetings to go over PACK Traits, CHAMPS, 10/10, Start on Time, and discipline and grading information. Black Hills is a great school with a talented staff and high expectations. We are proud of the level of commitment by our students, parents and staff to make this the best possible experience for every kid every day. The quality of your student’s experience is dependent upon choices; so please encourage your student to get involved and explore various options. We have a great music program both instrumental and choral, as well as a strong drama program. I want to encourage every student to try different electives that range from business and marketing, digital media, robotics, and leadership, to art, journalism, yearbook, sports medicine, child development, and physical education. Volunteer as a peer tutor and serve someone who could really use the support. Challenge yourself academically by trying a dual college credit course, or taking four years of math, science and/or world language. In addition, turn out for a sport or see a coach about being a helper on the team or get out and support your peers and the school as an enthusiastic fan. You make the difference by the choices you make so get involved. We have included in this edition of Wolf Tracks information about our upcoming Sprit Fire and Open House and an invitation to join Boosters. I hope you will join us at both events and sign up for Boosters. During our opening session at Open House, Mrs. Sue Anderson, our new assistant principal, will share information about our new grading policy. What is the Booster Club and how is it different from other parent groups?

We get this question a lot. The Booster Club is the nonprofit umbrella organization for all the sports, clubs and activity groups outside of ASB. If your student is in a sport, you most likely have been asked to help at a fundraiser, work the concession stand, encourage the sale of Gold Cards, etc. We act as treasurer for most of our clubs and sports. A few have their own nonprofit status in place. The Booster Club does not do an organized fundraiser for the club. We run the auction where all teams and clubs are encouraged to procure items for their own group. They receive 90% of the profits from the items they procure. Booster Club takes 10% to cover expenses and add a little to our general fund. The rest of the general fund is made up of your $10 donations.

We have the goal of doing projects and creating traditions at Black Hills that will last for years to come. Our projects include:

The Wall of Pride at the District Stadium (It is OUR stadium too J) The Wolf Pack paint on the entrance road The Spirit Fire celebration Grants available for PACK time activities and assemblies We are only limited by our funding. Even if you have very little time to volunteer, your $10 donation would be a great benefit to our school.

Please consider becoming a member. Like our Facebook page to stay up on the happenings at BHHS.

NEW LOOK TO PROGRESS REPORTS

The progress reports you’ll be receiving this year will look a little bit different than those you’ve seen in the past. In order to ensure the consistency, accuracy, and fairness of grades awarded in the Tumwater School District, in June the Board of Direc-tors approved revisions to the district’s policy on Grading and Reporting. The revised policy requires:

the separation of academic and nonacademic indicators, multiple opportunities to demonstrate proficiency, the elimination of group scores, and consistency within and among courses, grade levels, departments, schools, and the district.

District-wide procedures that support the policy provide guidelines for reporting nonacademic indicators (cooperation, punctu-ality, preparation, participation, and work completion). They also include a common grading scale for academic grades and guidelines for test retakes, if offered. The procedures distinguish between formative “practice” scores (e.g., homework, class-work, quizzes) and summative scores (e.g., tests, projects, papers, lab reports), and limits the former to a maximum of 10% of the grade to ensure that students aren’t penalized for practice.

A link to the new grading and reporting procedures is on the BHHS home page. We’ll be talking more about them at Open House on September 18. Should you have questions, please contact Sue Anderson, Assistant Principal, at 709-7807 or [email protected]
