PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Families, It is May and we have just four weeks left of the 2015-1016 school year. As we near the end of the year, please take the time to check the lost and found for clothing items that your child might have left behind on the playground or lower field. Our days start out quite chilly, but warm up considerably by lunch and students are shedding layers as they heat up. There are so many unclaimed jackets, sweaters and sweatshirts as well as hats, water bottles and lunch boxes, and all will be donated if not picked up by the last day. Thank you for taking the extra minute to check the rack outside of the office. May is appreciation month! Last week we celebrated all of the administrative assistants in the district, and we were all pleased to honor our own Jill Mayo, who is a welcoming and calming presence in our office. I know you all join me in thanking Jill for all that she does for our students, parents and staff! This week is Teacher Appreciation Week, a time to let teachers know how very much we appreciate them and all that they do. Your kind words will be so appreciated! So much of a teacher’s work is done behind the scenes to prepare for each day with your students. Planning creative instruction and activities could very well be a 24-hour a day job, so it is important for teachers to strike a balance in their lives and to be reminded that they are doing a great job and really important, meaningful work. Your children are our number one priority and are always behind all of our decision-making. Yesterday, at the district employee appreciation event, our own Mrs. Patricia Vaden was honored for 25 years of service to the district! Thank you, Patricia for your passion for teaching and for the IB Primary Years Programme! On May 25 th , we will celebrate you-all of our amazing volunteers! We invite you to attend the Volunteer Breakfast first thing in the morning so that we can thank you for all that you do for our students and for us. Your service to Lexington School makes all of the difference!! Next week we will celebrate our year together with our annual Open House. Thursday, May 12 th is a minimum day to allow teachers to prepare their classrooms-please makes a note of it. Brief announcements will be held outside at 6:15 p.m. with classrooms open from 6:30-7:30 p.m. We hope you will be able to join us, to visit your child’s classroom as well as the other grade levels. The fifth grade exhibition will also be available for your viewing pleasure! As usual, I thank you for all that you do for all of us who are lucky enough to be part of Lexington School! The  Growth  Mindset  Revolution:

How  to  Improve  Learning  in  School  and  Life  _____________________________________________________________________

Learn:  ● The  latest  brain  science  that  sheds  important  new  light  on  the  best  ways  to  learn.  ● How  supportive  learning  environments  emphasize  mistakes  as  essential  for  growth.    ● Techniques  that  support  inquiry-based  math  and  help  students  develop  the

growth  mindsets  that  will  help  them  in  school  and  in  life.

In recent years scientific studies have demonstrated that student and teacher ‘mindsets’ have a profound impact on                                  learning. Students with a ‘growth mindset’ (Dweck, 2006) who believe that intelligence and ‘smartness’ can be                                learned and that the brain can grow from exercise learn more effectively, displaying a desire for challenge and                                    showing resilience in the face of failure. Such behaviors encourage greater math persistence, engagement and high                                achievement.      Bio: Dr. Jo Boaler is a Professor of Mathematics Education at Stanford University and co-founder of                                youcubed.org . Former roles have included being the Marie Curie Professor of Mathematics Education for                            England, a mathematics teacher in London comprehensive schools and a lecturer and researcher at King’s                              College, London. She is the author of eight books including “The Elephant in the Classroom” (2015) and                                  “Mathematical Mindsets” (2016). She is the recipient of the Presidential National Science Foundation Award                            and the NCSM award for equity. She is also the author of the first MOOC on mathematics learning for                                      teachers  and  parents,  a  White  House  presenter  and  an  advisor  to  several  Silicon  Valley  firms.    The Parenting Continuum is a community alliance empowering parents to nurture the whole child and                              the whole family by focusing on K-12 parent education. We are a group of volunteer parents who bring                                    awareness, support, and resources on all aspects of family life. For current programs, updates, and                              resources, please visit: www.parentingcontinuum.org, www.facebook.com/parentingcontinuum, or            email  us  at  [email protected].

SCIENCE MUSIC

ART SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING

Visit lgef.org or find us on Facebook and Twitter. For general questions, e-mail us at [email protected].

LGEF: Serving Blossom Hill, Daves Avenue, Lexington, Van Meter, and RJ Fisher schools since 1982.

Sprint to the Finish: See How Just $100 Can Keep Student Programs Fully Funded LGEF science, music, art and social-emotional learning programs and resources touch every K-8 student in our district. However, due to the shortfall of $36,000 in donations this year, they are not all fully funded. Yet, if all student households do their share and support our schools with just a $100 donation to LGEF today, we sprint across the finish line together and ensure our students have the programs and resources so critical to a great education. And with school about to wrap up, this is the last chance to make it happen!

As additional support, our businesses and community members are also on the track to help take the baton to the finish. Here are a few of the latest examples:

Sereno Group of Los Gatos selected  LGEF  to  be  it’s  “1%  for  Good”  recipient  from  May-August. In this program, Sereno Group has pledged to give 1% of its gross commissions to LGEF, so, together, we can continue to make a positive difference in the community.

Whole Foods Market-Los Gatos selected  LGEF  as  its  “Nickels  for  Non-Profits”  recipient.  Each  time  shoppers  bring reusable bags, they can choose to have a nickel for each bag donated to LGEF from May-July.

Silicon Valley Gives: Yesterday, LGEF was a charity in this local event aimed at making it easy for community donors to support their favorite charities. To give our community more incentive to give to LGEF, our district’s  own  McEnroe family put up $4,000 dollars in donation-match funds.

Still, even with the generous financial support of local businesses and our community, our student body is so large at over 3,300 children that it takes the support of all district families to see our programs across the finish line. “Sprint  to  the  Finish”  for the students of Los Gatos: Donate $100 at LGEF.org today or mail a check to LGEF, 17010 Roberts Rd., Los Gatos, CA 95032. Thank you for supporting LGEF!
