Welcome to our Annual Report for the academic year 2012/13, and what a year it has been. This Annual Report is of significance as it is the final annual report for Coleg Sir Gar as a Further Education Institution. Following three years of development, on August 1st 2013 Coleg Sir Gar was formally dissolved as a Further Education Institution and a new entity created, Coleg Sir Gar, a limited company with charitable status. This new entity was designated for the purpose of delivering further and higher education. Simultaneously, in conjunction with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David a new Group structure was created with Coleg Sir Gar entering the group as a wholly owned subsidiary. In doing so we have ensured a sustainable future for the college and more importantly greater opportunities for our learners.

The academic year will also be remembered for the arrival of Estyn in May 2013 for a college wide inspection. I am pleased to report that the inspectorate confirmed and agreed with the findings of our own self assessment report, that the quality of provision at Coleg Sir Gar is good. In fact I am particularly pleased that the report on the college prepared by Estyn is a very strong report which identifies three examples of Excellence:§ Partnerships§ Literacy and Development§ The Learning environment

I must acknowledge the dedication and hard work of the staff in achieving this outcome. Building on the sector leading practice and strengths identified in the inspection we now eagerly continue on our journey to attain our vision - To be Excellent.

At the end of the year we moved into our new, purpose designed Animal Science and Equine Studies building at Pibwrlwyd. A significant investment from our reserves reflecting our commitment to support high performance provision in the college.

Despite all of the foregoing activity staff have worked extremely hard to ensure that our learners succeeded on their chosen programmes of education and training, at all times fulfilling one of our core aims, making learners the focus of our college. I am delighted that in 2012/13 our overall success rate has improved. Our provision is broad and diverse spanning from Entry Level to Graduate Qualifications. Our 14-16 provision, in partnership with the Carmarthenshire Network of schools continues to thrive and we have also witnessed significant growth in apprenticeship uptake as part of our work based learning provision.

In a national context we once again attained outstanding success in the annual Colegau Cymru Awards achieving Leadership at a Time of Change and Sports Legacy.

Across the entire college our learners have achieved regional and national recognition in award ceremonies and competitions, a sample of which are listed later within this publication. My heartiest congratulations to each and every learner.

Within Wales we continue to be the lead college for success and participation in Skills Competitions. We manage on behalf of the Welsh Government the Skills Competitions Wales initiative and have the highest level of entrants

from any college in Wales at the Skills Show 2013- the UK finals for skills competitions.Despite ongoing financial constraints and challenging cost increases we have focussed on stabilising our financial position and I am pleased to report another surplus for the year. A position which augers well for our future capital investment ambitions. In looking to the future, we have an exciting year ahead of us, 2013/14 will see us achieve, for our learners, the benefits we identified from merging into the University of Wales: Trinity Saint David Group. I would like to conclude with my sincerest thanks to all staff, governors, stakeholders and external partners for their ongoing support.

In preparing this statement I reflect upon what has been a truly tumultuous year for the college, a year in which so much has been achieved. At the year end we achieved our ambition of creating the unique, innovative Dual Sector University Group structure with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. I am grateful for the tremendous support I have received from all Board members in the pursuit of our objectives and look forward to representing the college as a Member of the University Council.

As a Corporate Board we continue to embrace considerable change, we have created a new governance structure, adopting the principles of the Humphrey’s review. I look forward to working with a new Board of Directors and a new Advisory Body- it is heartening to witness so many individuals keen to commit, with such enthusiasm, their time to the future of the college.

I and my fellow Board members are challenging, critical friends of the college and support, with a passion, the aspirations of the College Executive and Management Team. I am heartened with the significant development and achievements related to improving and enhancing teaching and learning in the college. This echoes my primary aim for the Board, to ensure all our learners achieve the best possible experience whilst at college.

Throughout the year I have been excited and indeed humbled whilst attending a wide range of events celebrating the achievement of our learners across the college. I was equally pleased to attend the staff awards at the end of the year and to witness the talent and passion which exists within the staff at Coleg Sir Gar. It is so important

to recognise the great work of our staff, this is so critical, as our learners experience and outcomes are totally reliant upon their input. As a Board we are committed to provide the right progression opportunities for all our learners, wether to a higher level course in further education, on to higher education or into employment. Our positioning within the group structure offers so many exciting opportunities for our learners, our staff and the college as a whole. I look forward to reporting on further success and progress in 2013/14.
