STATE EDUCATION WEEK This week state schools across Victoria have been celebrating Education Week 2014.The annual week-long celebration is an opportunity to recognise the talent and achievements of students and teachers in state schools, and showcase their wonderful work to the wider community. At Port Fairy Consolidated School we have had a very busy program. This week we have opened our doors for school tours, visited the local library with our pre-school friends and sang with the elderly at Moyneyana House. Our Education Week program culminates tomorrow with our ‘Walk safely to School Big Breakfast’ and our ‘Movie Day’ for Peter’s Project. WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL At Port Fairy Consolidated School physical activity is a high priority and to this end our staff and parent community work hard to ensure that all children are encouraged to take part in as many active pursuits as possible. The government’s ‘Walk Safely to School Day’ provides a great opportunity for all of us to be more active.’Walk Safely to School Day’ is an initiative of the Pedestrian Council of Australia. It is an annual national community event to encourage primary school students and their parents/carers to put their best foot forward and walk to school to promote road safety, health and sustainability. THE OBJECTIVES OF WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY ARE:
To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school-aged children and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour.
To promote the health benefits of walking and create regular walking habits at an early age To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians To reduce the car dependency habits that are being created at an early age To reduce the pollution caused by single occupancy vehicles To reduce the level of traffic congestion in school communities.
It’s important to remember that the habits your children form now will shape the way they live their lives as adults. We are very lucky in Port Fairy with our access to a spectacular natural environment, quality sporting facilities and junior sports programs. Let’s make sure we take full advantage of them! (Please check the map with today’s newsletter for meeting locations to walk to school.) AND PLEASE ENJOY BREAKFAST AT SCHOOL!! REPORTING ON STUDENT PROGRESS 2014 This year our reporting on student progress will be two fold.
Student Led Conferences. At this event each student will have the opportunity to present to their
parents/carers with regard to what has been happening at school this year. These conferences will take
about 15 minutes and they will take place in classrooms. These will be held on Tuesday, June 3 and
Wednesday, June 4, 4pm to 6pm. Booking information was sent home this week for these conferences.
Traditional Parent/Teacher Conferences. At this event parents/carers will have the opportunity to spend
time with the classroom teachers to discuss student progress and student written reports. These will be held
on Thursday, July 17, 4pm to 6pm and Friday, July 18, 8:30am to 3:30pm (this will be a pupil free day)
STUDENT LEADERS’ NEWS As you may know our Year 6 student leaders are planning a ‘Movie Day’ to be held tomorrow, Friday, May 23 (11:30am – 1:30pm), to raise money for Peter’s Project. To this end eight mini-cinemas will be set up in the school. All of the children have booked a seat at one of the cinemas. The following movies will be showing: CROODS, SMURFS 2, DESPICABLE ME (2), LION KING, TOY STORY (3), FINDING NEMO, TANGLED, STEP UP (3). Popcorn & ice-creams sold at recess (50c each). Entry cost to the movie will be a gold coin donation. SCHOOL COUNCIL REPORT Last night we held our May meeting of the Port Fairy Consolidated School Council. Some of the items reported on and/or discussed were: Our Wind Turbine, Out of School Hours Care, Skoolbag App and School Grounds. EISTEDDFOD PUBLIC SPEAKING This week saw the culmination of many hours of hard work preparing speeches for the Warrnambool Eisteddfod. Preps – What a busy and wonderful week Education
Week has been. We loved spending time with our buddies
at the Port Fairy town library on Wednesday and we can't
decide whether we liked the library visit or our hot
chocolates at Rebecca's café more. This week we are
focusing on the letter 'E' and the sound that it makes. We
have started listening to a story by Enid Blyton, The
Enchanted Wood, we are very excited to see what
happens to these interesting characters.
1/2’s - This week in Reading we will be learning the
strategory of how to blend, stretch and re-read words. In
writing we will be writing recounts. In Maths we will
beginning an independent task that uses addition and
subtraction strategies.
3/4’s - More testing!! On Demand, spelling and PaT.
Thank goodness we are nearly there. As well as all this
intense work we have been focussed on making
sentences more interesting by adding adverb and
adjectives. We have found the meaning of conclude in
the dictionary and have been writing procedural texts.
We continue our work on addition and subtraction. We
are designing a fruit shop and a smoothie shop. We are
looking forward to walking to school and breakfast
tomorrow.
4/5’s - This week we have been finishing our testing in
Reading, Maths and Spelling. In Maths we have created
our own subtraction problems and demonstrated the
different ways we can find a solution. Thank you to Melissa
for organizing our cooking session. We will correct
homework contract 6 this Friday.
5/6’s - What a hectic week we have had in 5/6
world. The 5/6 students faced a myriad of assessments
covering Literacy and Numeracy during the week. Also,
they took part in education activities that included shared
reading with preps and play group at the Port Fairy
Library. Once again our representative students did us
extremely proud with all their efforts at the public
speaking Eisteddfod. A big thank you to Miss Rebecca
Scarborough (4th yr teaching student) who has worked
with us over the past two weeks.

PRIMARY WELFARE NEWS FROM DANEEL.....
The importance of having a role model.
Who do you most admire? For a moment, stop and consider who most influences
you now and why. You will no doubt agree that the people you admire now are
giving you your most important life lessons.
In a child’s life, their parents, immediate family and teachers are their most obvious
role models. Children don’t just learn knowledge; they take in the whole attitude of
the person who is teaching them – who is role modelling to them.
As parents we can’t choose role models for our children as such. But we can make
sure they are exposed to a variety of different people, places and positive situations.
This also includes the books, magazines, television shows and computer games that
your children are exposed too.
Take the time to ask your child who is your role model?
· Who does your child look up to and admire?
· What have they taught your child?
· What qualities does your child admire in them?
· How does your child’s role model cope with difficult/challenging situations?
· How can your child be more like their role model?
· Is your child’s role model a member of your family, your local, national or
international community or a character in a book.
Characteristics of role models
· Speaks up about beliefs
· Helps others
· Has overcome adversity or hardship
· Has a good work ethic
· Is honest, peaceful and or wise
· Is concerned about human rights issues and social justice
· Has a sense of humour – able to see the funny side of life
· Contributes to society and or the local community
“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm” (Ralph W Emerson)
Art News - DO NOT MISS!!! Leading Australian Sculptor, Patricia Piccinini is exhibiting at the Warrnambool Art
Gallery until June 12th. Opening Times – Monday to Friday 10-5. Saturday/Sun 12 – 5.
We are looking intensely at Piccinini’s artwork in years 3-6 so all of these students are
greatly encouraged to attend.

Physical Education Good Luck to the students competing next Wednesday at the Division Cross Country in Warrnambool. It has been wonderful to see the students in training at lunch time with Mr Dwyer and after school running around town in their trainers! Winter Sports Netball training started this week. Year 4 - 6 students interested in playing can meet every Tuesday and Thursday at the start of lunch time at the Astro turf. The boys have been training as well at lunch times with Mr Dwyer and Mr Beekhoff but we are still looking for a couple of dedicated coaches to come assist us. If you are available we would much appreciate it. The Moyne Winter Sports Football/Netball Carnival will be held in Koroit on Friday 20th June. It has been wonderful in the last week to walk into the school yard at play times and see all the sports equipment being used by our students. The equipment has brought a new life to the playground and some trees!!! It will be up to the classes to take responsibility now to look after them and be in the running for a class reward at the end of term. …Ms Ellliott
