Volume 6 ● March/April 2017 PRINCIPAL’S CORNER by Patrick McKee, Principal March 17 th at La Verne Heights was Career Day. We are so thankful to all of the family members and community agencies who came out to teach our students about their careers. Guests included fire fighters, law en- forcement, business owners, engineers, doctors, and so much more. Thank you to everyone who came to LVH to speak to our students. This edion of The Lion’s Roar is filled with many pictures and arcles about events and programs during the past few months at La Verne Heights. One trend that you see growing in our classrooms is the integraon of STEAM lessons. STEAM lessons combine two or more of the following areas: Science, Technology Engineering, Arts and Mathe- macs. The lessons have kids think crically in a fun, project based learning environ- ment. This can range from our Kindergarten- ers who created protecve crates so that their eggs can survive an eight foot drop to the ground to our third graders who created marble slides that need to hit specific targets. These lessons e together the 4 C’s needed in a 21 st century classroom: crical thinking, communicaon, collaboraon, and creavity. Although foundaonal now, the successful combinaon of these skills will support students in gaining a compeve edge as they prepare for their future careers and college.

PRINCIPAL’S

CORNER by Patrick McKee, Principal

March 17th at La Verne Heights was Career Day. We are so thankful to all of the family members and community agencies who came out to teach our students about their careers. Guests included fire fighters, law en-forcement, business owners, engineers, doctors, and so much more. Thank you to everyone who came to LVH to speak to our students.

This edition of The Lion’s Roar is filled with many pictures and articles about events and programs during the past few months at La Verne Heights. One trend that you see growing in our classrooms is the integration of STEAM lessons. STEAM lessons combine two or more of the following areas: Science, Technology Engineering, Arts and Mathe-matics. The lessons have kids think critically in a fun, project based learning environ-ment. This can range from our Kindergarten-ers who created protective crates so that their eggs can survive an eight foot drop to the ground to our third graders who created marble slides that need to hit specific targets. These lessons tie together the 4 C’s needed in a 21st century classroom: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. Although foundational now, the successful combination of these skills will support students in gaining a competitive edge as they prepare for their future careers and college.

From April 11th through April 14th, LVH 5th graders attended Science Camp at Camp Edwards in the San Bernardino Mountains. They enjoyed

mountain hikes, archery, rock climbing, and so much more. They had a great time learning about the outdoors.

On March 25th, ten fourth and fifth graders represented La Verne Heights Elementary School for the 8th Annual Math Field Day. As the top Mathletes for their grade level, these students spent three hours competing in math tasks involving conceptual understand-ing, problem solving, and computation. We are proud to announce that our 4th grade team placed third overall in Bonita Unified and our 5th grade team placed second overall in Bonita Unified. We are indeed very proud of these spectacular students.

As a part of the enrichment experience for our gifted and talented program, GATE students performed fish dissections on March 29th. The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium Ocean Outreach came to La Verne Heights to teach provide students with a hands-on dissection lab. Students learned about fish classification as well as techniques and tools scientists use to examine the external anatomy and the internal organ functions of an ocean fish.

3rd graders in Mrs. Chin's class partici-pate in a STEAM activity, building their own marble runs.

La Verne Heights Elementary School celebrat-ed Dr. Seuss' birthday on March 3rd by having a read-in. Children came to school dressed in their pajamas and spent the day reading and taking Accelerated Reader quizzes. Mr. McKee began the day by reading The Pout-Pout Fish in the Big-Big Dark to the classrooms on the closed circuit television system. Then, students hit the books, reading 3,876 books with an average comprehension of 90.7% for the day. The total words read on March 3rd was 2,692,445. Way to go LVH!

In February, an arborist evaluated the trees along the field at La Verne Heights and decided to trim them for student safety. Because of the intense rain this season, the branches became quite heavy and began to break off. The good news is they were able to mulch the branches for other areas around our school.

On the blacktop, the multiplication tables 2-9 were printed into each of the hopscotch squares.

A new nylon gate was installed along the parking lot and the parking lot was upgraded to meet ADA code.

On March 10th the LVH PTA presented its annual Talent Show, under the direc-tion of Michelle Starkey. Over 100 stu-dents performed to a full house at the Bonita Center for the Arts. There were singers, dancers, black belts, and come-dians! It was a wonderful showcase of the talented kids at La Verne Heights.
