Hi everyone,

Welcome to term 2. We have had such a love-

ly start to the term with the students very

quickly engaging in their new learning. It has

been so wonderful to visit each class and to

see all of the smiles of staff and students.

Last Friday, we had a beautiful ANZAC Day

service at the school. Our school leaders did

an amazing job running such a respectful pa-

rade, thank you to all of the Year 6 students

and to Mr Hammelswang. A special thanks to

our guest speaker, Mr Trever Mullins, from

the Townsville RSL for sharing his stories with

the students. I was so incredibly proud of our

students that participated in the island dawn

service on Sunday. They demonstrated out-

standing, respectful behaviour as they repre-

sented our school. It was also great to be

joined by our Girl Guides, in their full uniform,

as part of our student group.

One of our school’s focus areas is staff and

student wellbeing. The department are look-

ing at ways to collect information on student

wellbeing, so we have put up our hand to be

part of a trial survey. The Queensland

Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) sur-

vey is designed to measure how our stu-

dents view their wellbeing and engage-

ment at school. This survey will happen

in June and will involve our Year 4, 5 and

6 students. For more information about

In May, from the 12th to the 19th , our Year 3

and 5 students will be participating in NAPLAN

Online. One of the main benefits of participat-

ing in the online version of this annual assess-

ment, is that the testing questions are tailored

to the individual student and are adaptive to

measure a wider range of achievement. Stu-

dents are already familiar with the platform

being used and have trialled the new system.

To find out more about NAPLAN Online, visit

nap.edu.au, or come and have a chat with Paul

Wood, myself or the classroom teachers.

Over the last weekend, sadly we have had

people in our school grounds that have done

some damage. Please help us. If you see peo-

ple on the school grounds that should not be

here, please call School Watch on 131788 or

Police Link on 131444. We are all so very

proud of our school, it is quite disheartening

when people do things to damage it.

Tonight is our P&C meeting, I look forward to

seeing you there.

Happy days.

P&C News

The P&C would like to thank everyone who brought in a gold coin for

our very first free dress day on the last week of term. We raised over

$200 to support Magnetic Island Network for Turtles (MINT). We are

so proud of this effort. We will be holding another free dress day

later this term, so stay tuned to find out who we are fundraising for.

The next P&C meeting will be today, Tuesday 27th at 5pm in the staff

room. We will be discussing some upcoming fundraisers and hope

to see you there. All welcome to attend.

Year 1 Deb Hay & Vicki Skinner

The Preps have been very enthusiastic

about their new homework routines.

Thanks to the parents who have been

supporting and encouraging their chil-

dren to practise their sight words and

to read their reading book every day.

We are noticing improvements al-

ready. If you have any question about

how to support your child with their

homework, please email me or ask me

after school.

The children were very interested in

our discussion about ANZAC Day and I

have included a photo of the wreath

made from poppies that the children

painted. Mosby and Kash did a great job

of laying the wreath at our school ANZAC

service on Friday afternoon.

We have noticed an increase in coughs

and sniffles, so please keep your child at

home if they are unwell.

I’ve also included some lovely emu pic-

tures that the children drew in a directed

drawing activity. This was our first di-

rected drawing activity and as you can

see they’ve done a great job. The rest of

the class’ pictures are hanging in our

classroom, if you’d like to see them.

.

We have jumped straight back in to our

learning over the past week as the stu-

dents have returned very calm, settled

and ready to go. This term, in our Eng-

lish work, we are exploring characters

in stories. Students will be writing char-

acter descriptions and describing char-

acters that they learn about in their

reading. We have included sight words

in the take home reading folders and we

will regularly add to these as well as our

weekly spelling lists and daily reading.

In Maths, we are learning about 2D and

3D shapes and money. We are very ex-

cited to set up our class shop this week

and use our money skills in this dra-

matic play area. In our first week back,

we have had wonderful attendance and

a huge support from our morning read-

ing volunteers. Thank you all.

We were very proud to present our

class wreath at the school ANZAC Day

service. The students that were chosen

to do this were very respectful and did

an amazing job.

Year 3 Janette Blundy

Year 4 Megan Ward

Hello and welcome to Term 2. Week 1 & 2 have been all

about setting out the requirements for the topics we will be

covering this term.

In English the students have been delighted by the story of

Charlotte’s Web and I will be looking forward to seeing

them use their knowledge of verbs to write and present a

procedural text in character. They will also be writing a

persuasive text later in the term.

We have been practising addition strategies in Maths and

have so far covered the ‘split’, ‘jump’ and ‘compensation’

strategies.

Our reading group and HASS topic in week 1 was all about

ANZAC Day. We had lots of great discussions about the

Gallipoli Campaign and the importance of the ANZAC

commemoration. The students created beautiful artworks

and we created a special wreath for our school ANZAC

Parade last Friday.

We have begun our unit of learning about living and non-

living things in Science, and the students are all looking

forward to finding out more about the Great Barrier Reef.

We are also looking forward to our excursion to the newly re-opened Museum of Tropical Qld in Townsville, to participate in

the World Science Festival on Friday 7th May. Please ensure that your child has returned their permission forms for this event.

Year 2 Jacky Roper What a great start to term 2 and it was

wonderful to see all the Year 2 students

eager to back at school. We have

jumped right in and started our new

English unit for this term, this will focus

on narrative writing and characters from

stories. We have being reading some

great stories that focus on animal char-

acters, particularly the stories of Old Pig

and the story of Fox.

We will start Maths for this term by fo-

cusing on shapes and transformations.

We have reviewed 2D shapes and have

now begun familiarising ourselves with

3D shapes. As we progress further into

this unit we will then explore how

shapes can move with flips, slides and

turns.

We hope you had an enjoyable

Easter break, it was so nice hear-

ing about all of the fun that the

students had during their holiday

break. We have jumped straight

into our new learning for the

term.

In English we will be examining

humour in poetry. Science is all

about forces, we will use games

to investigate and demonstrate

the direction of forces and the

effect of contact and non-contact

forces on objects. Maths this

term will include learning about

fractions, money, symmetry and

3D Shapes.

This week our PCL focus is about

being responsible and encour-

ages students to look, listen,

learn and stay focused.

Year 5 Jodie Wilson Namoa Year 5 were very excited to get into our

shiny new classroom to begin Term 2.

We are settling in nicely and have be-

gun working hard on some exciting

units.

We started the week with a mini Mathe-

matics unit based on collecting data,

creating graphs and interpreting the

information. In order to choose the six

most favourite cereals in Year 5, the

class took part in a survey to find out

which cereals we are going to study.

We are now going to collect nutritional

data from these cereals and compare

the results. After this, we will be jump-

ing into mathematical concepts related

to fractions and decimals.

In Science lessons, students will be stud-

ying space science and finding out how

it contributes to our everyday lives.

Would you believe that we have space

science to thank for LED lights, compact

technology such as laptops, as well as

materials such as memory foam or soles

of comfy sneakers?

We have begun our Design technology

unit where we will plan, design and

build something that will allow us to co-

exist with wildlife in our school. We

began investigating products and mate-

rials used, and were surprised at the

number of products that have been de-

signed to help us live harmoniously with

nature.

For HASS, we will be expanding our

understanding of the world, and will

have the opportunity to study countries

around the world. We will investigate

human and environmental characteris-

tics of various places, and then decide

on our favourite country to create a pro-

ject poster. This unit integrates with

English, where we are learning about

structural and language features of per-

suasive writing, including feature arti-

cles. Once we have chosen our favour-

ite countries, we will be writing a per-

suasive article about our chosen place,

to persuade others to live or visit there.

As you can tell, Year 5 have a super

busy term ahead! I will continue to en-

courage the homework routine, to help

the students create good work habits

throughout the year. This involves stu-

dents returning their homework book

each Friday, and taking advantage of

the fantastic online sites such as A-Z vo-

cabulary, Studyladder and Prodigy

maths.

Parents and carers, if you missed

parent/teacher interviews at the end of

last term, and wish to catch up with me,

please contact through email or school

phone to arrange a time. Thank you.

Page 6: Principal s Report Kacey onstantine - e Q

Page 6 Magnetic Island State School School Vision: All students can succeed.

Welcome back to Term 2. It’s another

busy one for us, but it will be produc-

tive, and hopefully enjoyable. Some

children took a while to pick up their

energy levels after the holidays, but by

week’s end, we were generally pro-

gressing well.

We have begun our English unit, in

which children create a multi-modal

advertisement for a holiday destination,

and then explain how their choices of

language and images persuade viewers.

In the past students have enjoyed this

unit, and I’m sure we’ll have some very

impressive results at the end.

We have begun our introduction and revi-

sion of LEM rules, so we worked through

our first spelling list last week. To begin

with, this process is relatively slow and

deliberate, but once children understand

the routine, the pace increases.

In Maths we reviewed concepts from Term

1, and also began to discuss complemen-

tary angles and mean averages. We have

looked at equivalent common fractions

and begun to convert between equivalent

fractions.

We were very proud and impressed by

the way Seniors conducted our ANZAC

Day ceremony at school last Friday. It

was terrific to see almost every student

speak on the stage and all class mem-

bers have some involvement in the cere-

mony. I received quite a lot of positive

feedback from staff about the job done

by our Seniors. Well done, everyone.

Please be sure to contact me if you have

any concerns regarding your child’s pro-

gress.

Year 6 Martin Hammelswang

Kitchen Garden

.

Our Whole School Planting days are happening next week, on Thursday 6th and Friday 7th May.

We have a great range of fun activities planned to run alongside the planting, and we need some parent helpers to

come and help us run these.

If you can help on either day, please call or text Mrs Jupp this week on 0439 777 553.

DAY 1 - Thursday 8.45 – 12.15 (older students from Yrs 3-6)

DAY 2 - Friday 8.45 – 11.45 (younger students from PY-Yr 2)

This time of year is a very busy for the school kitchen garden so we want to see lots of students out in the fresh air helping: the

garden is open every second lunch and everyone is welcome. Conditions are just right for our whole of school planting: gar-

den beds fertilized and Mother Nature delivering all that rain last week. Thank you so much to our school families for the dona-

tions of Woolies seeds which will add to our selection of heritage seeds, and seeds we have created from previous harvests for

the planting. One of the activities requires fruit and vegetables with seeds for the students to examine. Donations of any extras

you may have at home will be appreciated. We are looking for parent helpers too—see below. Happy gardening!

Obe Geia Challenge

The Obe Geia Challenge was established in 2009 by

the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys to bring com-

munities together and promote the importance of

inclusion in North Queensland. Hosted by the remote

Indigenous community of Palm Island, this hugely

popular event has grown to include 12 local and

mainland teams of 15 players aged 10-12 years. The

carnival promotes the benefits of sport, fitness and

healthy living and grassroots rugby league and also aims to increase

positive attitudes and behaviours and reduce truancy. Participation in

the carnival is at no cost to the students, their families or their school.

The day is enjoyed by all involved and features a strong cultural educa-

tion component, with students having the opportunity to experience first-

hand the beauty of Palm Island, its people and their culture.

The Challenge is named after former Cowboys player and Palm Island

local Obe Geia. Obadiah "Obe" Geia (born 12 February 1989,

in Townsville, Queensland) is an Australian professional rugby

league footballer who played in the 2000s. He played for the North

Queensland Cowboys in the National Rugby League (NRL), as a wing.

While attending Kirwan State High School he played for the Australian

schoolboys side, and was the team's top try-scorer on the 2006 tour of

Great Britain. He went on to play two matches for the North Queensland

Cowboys in the NRL, becoming the first person from the Aboriginal com-

munity of Palm Island to do so.

Students (boys and girls) interested in playing in our school team at this

event are welcome to attend training on Wednesday at second lunch.
