IT’S GOOD NEWS

Congratulations!

Our Student Leaders and Year Level Councillors for 2019.

PREP Dear families and carers, thank you so much for supporting your child before, during and after reading as many texts as possible at home and while out and about. We are learning that stories contain characters and settings. This gives us more opportunities to share chats while reading about the various characters and story settings. Asking, “Who are the characters?” “What do you think of them?” “Where are the characters?” makes the reading experience richer for you both.

YEAR 1 This week we will focus on praising your child during reading. There are two types of praise—explicit and general. Explicit praise directly relates to the words they are reading. Examples include; “Fantastic, that didn’t make sense at first and you corrected it.” “Your reading was really enjoyable to listen to today because…” Another example is; “Well done for trying to stretch that word.” General praise relates to your child’s overall reading. Ideas include; “Great work, you are reading so well.” “I liked listening to you read.” “You are improving every time you read. Well done!” When you are listening to your child read their home reader this week, try and use lots of praise. Grade One has started Art rotations every Friday afternoon. Don’t forget to ask your child what they did in Art rotations this Friday.

YEAR 2 A big thanks to all families for doing home readers with your child every day, and for practising the spelling words that come home. Just a reminder that the first bell goes at 8:50am. Can we ask that students be ready for their day and in the classroom at this time. In Year 2 we love volunteers to help out in the classroom. If you have some time and are able to help in your child’s room please talk with your classroom teacher.

YEAR 3 Last week on Parade Mrs Brennan taught us a fabulous acronym HERO - Here Everyday Ready On-time! Your Year 3 day starts at 8:50am. Families are asked to help their child to have a positive start to the day by ensuring they are at the classroom between 8:30-8:45am with everything they need ready for a successful day. Your child will now be aware of their classroom’s morning routine and will be completing all their morning jobs by themselves. Let’s all be a H.E.R.O!

YEAR 4 We are now into the second half of term one. A big thank you to all the parent helpers who have been coming along to the kitchen and garden sessions so far. If you are a mum, dad, uncle, aunty, grandma or grandad who has a keen interest in cooking or gardening then please get in touch with your child’s teacher and come in to lend a hand. This program is not possible without the help of volunteers like you. Thank you.

YEAR 5 We are past the half way mark of the term and students are working steadily to be great learners. Please be aware that students should have some sort of homework or reading they are to complete weekly. This prepares them for their future workload at high school and in the workplace. If you have any concerns about what your child should be doing, please contact your child’s teacher. Reminder: students still have swimming this term and will need to make sure they bring their gear on the appropriate day.

Music Notes

Years 3-6 Choir has now been split into two groups. Lists are up on the M Block music room window and students involved should now check whether they are the Wednesday 7:45am Choir (Maroon) or the Wednesday 1st lunch break rehearsing group (Gold Choir). These changes begin this week. Any questions, please see Mrs Richardson or Mrs Hogan. The Years 1 and 2 Choir is amazing and Miss Hari and I are so impressed with students dedication and the sound they are producing. This group continues rehearsing as normal, every Wednesday 8:10am in the F Block music room. Students wait by the stage in the undercover area and the door will be opened just before 8:10am. Thanks Miss Curtis

Bebras Computational Quiz commences this week. Students completing the task at lunchtimes must make their way to the blue lab with their lunches at 11am. Remember to bring your password booklet. Pi Day is now only ten days away- 14th March. Keep memorising Pi to -19th place for a chance to win free pie! I have already have been cornered by students who have that miraculous yet irrational number firmly committed to their memories. Well done students. Put your money aside for NEXT WEEK, for those beautiful apple pies that the tuckshop has ordered for us. I will remind you next week as the pies will only be on sale for one day - Thursday the 14th March. Sorry – all Academy places are full until August. We are currently developing a new enrolment system. We shall notify you via this newsletter once enrolments open. Mr Harris

Nihongo News

This week we welcome visiting students from Matsuyama Shinonome Junior High School in Japan. Students in Year 1 and Year 3 enjoyed spending time with our visitors, showing them around the school.

Many students and parents have expressed that they would like to be able to access resources to help with Japanese language learning from home. Year 5 and Year 6 students can now use Education Perfect online program to help reinforce concepts and vocabulary covered at school. The program also allows students to extend their language use if they would like to, and to revise language covered in previous units and grades. To use Education Perfect, Year 5 and Year 6 students need their own username and password. They can get this from their Japanese teacher. There is also a Japanese page on our Edge Hill Student Sharepoint. Resources will be uploaded to this site progressively throughout the year. We are looking forward to hearing what our students all think of it! Any questions or enquiries, please contact Stevenson Sensei [email protected]

A SAFETY MESSAGE Students and members of the public are

reminded that they must walk with their bicycles over zebra crossings.

Please do not ride over crossings.

YEAR 6 Congratulations to all our school leaders who were inducted last Friday on Parade. We look forward to a year of outstanding organisation and leadership. After the heat, Interschool Sport has begun! Students enjoyed competing against other school sin team sports and demonstrated exemplary behaviour as Edge Hill SS representatives. Keep up the good conduct and amazing sportsmanship in Year 6!
