Dear Parents and Carers, We were delighted to celebrate and share the work of our students during Education Week. A Healthy Body, Healthy Mindtheme saw students working in the garden, participating in a Fitbit challenge, trying out yoga and even some boxing sessions with Melissa Moorfoot at BRC. The Café was open at Cayleys Road and there was a healthy picnic for some students in the early years. Thank you to all the parents who visited the school. Last Wednesday students at this campus took part in The National Simultaneous Storytime. At 11:00 am it was great to see so many students reading, being read to and enjoying the The Cow tripped over the Moon. We are all trying to improve as readers at Warringa Park School. It was great to see so many students involved in the Jump Rope for Heartactivities last week. Jump Rope for Heart is all about learning how to keep fit and healthy and the students had lots of fun playing skipping games. Emilia Tessaro and Kasey Dixon did a great job of organising this event. Many students are completing the Attitudes to School survey over the next couple of weeks. The Attitudes to School survey is an annual survey for Years 4 to 12 students offered by the Department of Education and Training to find out what your child thinks of our school. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. Our school will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your child's experience at school. Therese Bourke will be assisting students to complete the survey. We have had some wintery weather and I would encourage students to rug up and make sure they are dressed appropriately to avoid the winter chills. A reminder that students are expected to wear the school uniform. Uniforms can be purchased from Rushfords Schoolwear, Watton Arcade 3-5/28 Watton St, Werribee. If you require any assistance with the uniform please inform the school office or discuss with Student Wellbeing A reminder that Friday May 26th is a Report Writing day and students will not be required at school on that day. I am taking long service leave for the remainder of the term and Dehlia Dawson will be charge of the school I my absence. Once again thank you to all those parents who helped to celebrate Education Week. Marie Hayes, Principal Wellbeing News Warringa Park School highly values the links and relationships we form with the families of our students and we have had a very successful fortnight in this regard. We had Lud Allen run a Puberty and Sexual Education workshop for parents last week and this was very well attended. It was great to meet with parents and support our students as they develop into young adults. We have also had big numbers attend our regular parent tours and thank you to Heather Pilcher for her work in supporting new parents become familiar with our school and guide them through the enrolment procedures. New parents are welcome to contact the school and book in for any upcoming school tours. The SRC are doing some excellent work preparing presentations for school council. This is an important experience for our students, to identify an improvment they would like to see in their school, put forward a proposal and bring this to school council. We are very proud of the opportunities we are creating across the school for our students to have a voice. This week we also supported our highly valued Education Support staff with a professional learning day. Thank you to the staff who presented and supported this program, which is an important means to build the capacity and acknowledge the work of our ES staff. Have a wonderful weekend. Specialist Music News... Last Tuesday we took a cohort of students including Groups 37 and 20 to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. We encountered a fabulous performance by renowned jazz musician and trumpet player, James Morrison. The performance entitled “Meet the Orchestra” was highly engaging and interactive for our students. We later had lunch in the Royal Botanical Gardens and then, freshly inspired by the earlier event, we created our own performance in the park titled “I’m the Conductor” which involved students using our percussion instruments and the students taking it in turn to be the conductor. The excursion gave our students an appreciation of the atmosphere and dynamics involved in live performance. Music photos posted here were taken at the MSO & in the Royal Botanical Gardens Performing Arts photos: where students have been using costumes to help make their own iMovie’s

Art Photos - Chad, and Paolo and Safia from Group 22 are using elements of nature to make rubbings, paste, explore textures and lines and do printmaking in Art using nature as inspiration. Gavin, Music Teacher

Child Safe Standards Victoria has introduced compulsory minimum standards for organisations and schools that provide services for children to

help protect children from abuse.

The Child Safe Standards form part of the Victorian Government’s response to the Betrayal of Trust Inquiry (the 2013 Parliamentary Inquiry into the Handling of Child Abuse by Religious and Other Non-Government Organisations). Education, awareness raising and helping organisations and schools to create and maintain child safe environments will be the initial focus of the Child Safe Standards. Warringa Park School has completed an audit in 2016 related to meeting Child Safe Standards and is compliant.

The school values the importance of putting the child at the focus of education, safety and wellbeing. Recently our school was named as a Lead School for the Respectful Relationships initiative. The Respectful Relationships initiative is in response to the recommendations from the Royal Commission into Family Violence. The Respectful Relationships initiative allows our school to collaborate with the Respectful Relationship Team and other schools for a period of at least 18 months to build and sustain school cultures of respect and gender equality, both as learning places and as workplaces that aim to achieve long-term change in the community. The Victorian Government is investing $21.8 million over two years to support the delivery of a whole school approach to the prevention of family violence. The Respectful Relationships Project team will assist with supporting our school to implement a whole school approach to the prevention

of family violence and to deliver the P-12 Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships curriculum.

Child Safety Is Everyone’s Responsibility Talk to your children asking them:

When do you feel safe? What makes you feel safe?

Keep Me Home If…. It has come to that time of year again where sicknesses is widespread so we would greatly appreciate you keeping your child home while they are unwell and/or contagious. We have many students who are immunosuppressant and rely heavily on a healthy classroom setting. Please have a look at the diagram here to know your child's symptoms and when to not send them to school.

I like to keep these plans as current and relevant as possible. If any student has a recent seizure please contact me, so I can update their plans. Asthma Plans: With the winter months now approaching please ensure your student has a current Asthma Plan. New Asthma Action Plans can be obtained from the First Aid Room. Medication: As per school policy we ask parents to commence all new medication over the weekend or holidays. So this can be closely monitored for any possible allergic reactions or side effects. We appreciate your cooperation regarding this. If you have any questions regarding medication or need your child to take medication at school please contact me. Please note:

All medication needs to be in the original packaging with child’s name, dose and time on the box.

If medication is being transported in students bags please contact the school as soon as possible, so we can remove the medication. Chaperones can secure school bags whilst on the bus but must not be used as a courier.

If at all possible directly handing over the medication at reception or myself would be appreciated.

Going on Camp?

If your student is going on a school camp (how exciting!) please ensure the following: 1. Let your bus chaperone know the dates

when your student will NOT be going on the bus so that the bus doesn’t wait for a student that is away on camp and

2. Check with the chaperone if your student’s camp baggage can go on the bus as many of our buses are NOT ABLE to accommodate the additional baggage that students need to take to camp. You will probably have to arrange to both drop off and pick up your student from school. This is an important safety issue for the buses.
