Issue 6 2018
Wednesday 9 May, 2018
SCHOOL CEREMONY
The school held its own social ANZAC ceremony on Tuesday 1 May. The white
crosses made up the field of remembrance and the students laid poppies that
they had made in class. Nathaniel I from Room 7 and Eta S from Room 8 hosted
the service. Head Boy Tim B and Head Girl Nadiah P read out poems and Mr
Levine played the bugle.
SIGN LANGUAGE WEEK
New Zealand Sign Language is one of the 3 official
languages of New Zealand. NZSL became the third
official language on April 6, 2006. Our Year 7 and 8
students learn NZSL as one of the language modules
they take. Other students learn simple greetings.
The students can progress their sign language
further using instructional videos on the internet.
ANZAC DAY
On Wednesday 25th April, students from
our school attended the Anzac Day civil
service at the cenotaph in Papakura. Our
school councillors presented a wreath to
commemorate all New Zealanders killed
in war and also honour our returned
servicemen and women.
Thank you to the parents and whānau
who supported this event.

OPAHEKE SCHOOL NETBALL CLUB Our Opaheke School netball teams all got fully underway on
Saturday 5th May. This season we have 8 teams representing
Opaheke School Netball Club including a year 1&2 team
(Opaheke Sparkles), two year 3&4 teams (Opaheke Unicorns and
Opaheke Diamonds), two year 5 teams (Opaheke Magic and
Opaheke Lightning), one year 6 team
(Opaheke Thunder) and two
intermediate (year 7&8) teams (Opaheke
Stars and Opaheke Storm). The girls
have all enjoyed their netball so far and
are making great gains in learning new
skills and working together as a team.
The Papakura Netball Centre also had
their opening day ceremony on Saturday and we were very well
represented by our girls. We also won one of the awards for “Best
Banner” – here is a photo of the award-winning banner created
many years ago by Joanna Fieldes (whose children came to
Opaheke).
We look forward to sharing our team results, player of the day
awards etc. with the school community as we go through the
season.

OUR ANZAC WHITE CROSS CEREMONY
My favourite part of our
Marae visit was making the
flax flowers. I ended up
helping the rest of my class
with their flowers cause I
already knew how to make
them. One of the old ladies at
the marae that was helping
with the flowers taught me
how to make a rose shaped
flower out of flax too.
( Nicky )
YEAR 7 & 8 STUDENTS VISIT PAPAKURA MARAE
On Thursday the 12th of April all of the year 7 and 8 students went to
the Papakura Marae. We did activities like making flax flowers and
learning how to make fried bread. When we first arrived we were
welcomed onto the Marae by one of the ladies from the Marae. Once
we entered the Wharenui our 3 speakers said their speech, we then
did our school waiata, another waiata and then the
Papakura haka. After the Põwhiri we ate our morning tea and then
went and did our activities. The activities were fried bread making,
rãkau sticks, kapa haka practice and flax flower making. After we
completed all of these activities we ate our lunch and then did the
Opaheke haka to say thank you to ours hosts. ( Nicky, Amore, Liam )
My favourite part of our
marae visit was tying and
twisting up the flax to
make a flower also I loved
eating the fry bread it was
delicious. ( Liam )
My favourite part of
visiting the Marae
was doing my
Whaikõrero as I had
been preparing for
it for a while. I also
enjoyed doing all
the activities but I
mostly enjoyed
learning how to
cook fried bread and
when we got to eat
it and it felt real
delicious. ( Amore )

In Room 5 (Year 5) we have been
working on our blending skills in Art.
Using Van Gogh's Sunflowers as our
inspiration, we have been using the
medium of crayons to create our own
sunflowers. Here are some of our
pieces.
